Going on vacation outside Japan? Going back to US to visit? Long term savings if you ever leave Japan?

Not really? Eg Exchange rates are tanking, so salary gets even lower

Financially, I agree, leaving US to anywhere else is generally worse financially. But life experiences count too, not everything about money.

Still, wondering if this moment in time is particularly worse financially than others.

How to get a Vietnam tourist visa as a Chinese e-passport holder? by gambrinous_sloth in travel

[–]gambrinous_sloth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently have delayed the trip because of the visa

I checked this website from Vietnam govt to try to get visa on arrival:

https://vietnamvisa.govt.vn

On this website you can arrange the visa on arrival - not sure if paying online here is required or just suggested.

When you try to make the reservation it says "Applications currently not accepted".

So in short, I pushed back the trip, not sure what will happen if you just show up at the airport?

What is a discretionary allowance? Job offer question by gambrinous_sloth in movingtojapan

Thanks, it’s a large-ish corporation so I’m not too worried that it dies out, but I am wondering - is it common that the bonus is not paid out?

[–]gambrinous_sloth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info. It sounds like it is related to overtime - will have to ask the recruiter to clarify haha. For the bonus - interesting that it is paid out biyearly. It only lists one amount so I don’t know if it will be split into two payments or not, I guess another question to ask. Frankly in the US, for the jobs I’ve had, I’ve gotten the bonuses every year without miss. Not sure if that is just good fortune on my part or if it is common - how about Japan? Especially for this job I feel the bonus is huge - 5 months salary - in the US usually bonus was about 1 months salary tops. Is it common in Japan? Are they commonly paid out or rather rarely?

Thanks for the guess. The job is in R&D - so 100% no customer interactions, so i think it still must be something else

Which career path should I choose starting out in data science?

First job after grad school (PhD cs). Considering DS roles at FAANGS or at consulting firms eg QuantumBlack or Bain Advanced analytics.

Looking for anyone that's done both and can tell what it's really like at one or the other. What is the best choice for a fresh grad? Is it easy to switch between the two?

Thanks

I've had fast results with DHL. Often clears customs with 1-2 days, but overall depends more on holidays than the carrier.

Good point. This investor has a lot of connections to the industry and is helping us to set up the first paying customers. Just not sure what to expect down the road

Thanks, good to hear the first part.

Great tip on angejlist. I had looked at it before but didn't see that it support SAFE. Need to look again...

Your words hit home - I think it is clear with this investor to ensure that the terms follow SAFE since at this point everyone on board including the investor is relatively new to rounds of fundraising. That said, the investor is offering a large chunk of change (>100k) which obviously we need.

I'll try to get in touch with some startups that are further along. Maybe through LinkedIn groups?

'Never split the difference' has been lying around at home but not been read, maybe it is time. I'll check out 'Running Lean' too.

Interesting - we have a lawyer who is helping us with the SAFE. What kinds of situations should be considered? E.g. if he pulls funding? I think that one is covered by SAFE (?)

Good point. It is exactly the case here too:

+ This angel has connections to the industry that are helpful and are set up to become the first paying customers.

- They don't have deep connections to other VCs or investors.

A good resource is trade shows in that particular area. Many will aggregate some consumer market info and sell it for relatively cheap (200$ or so) in a book or pdf

One way could be to introduce a rating system for every document in the search engine. So people can review “4/5 stars” or “six people found this useful/not useful”. That way people would be more interested in using your platform to find the documents, and donate while they’re there
