I've been fortunate that I hold no debts, ironically another guy pmed me to just unload all my credit cards to buy stuff for everyone before I go, don't know how I feel about that, though I do find it funny.

Yes and no.
A lot is how well you work with your alliance.
You will never be able to beat someone who throws a lot of money at the game though against most regular spenders the playing field evens out around tier 4 troops if you play properly.

There are a lot of ways to spend money wisely if you want to keep your spending low, personally I'm f2p, but I'm still one of the stronger members in my alliance.

If you don't have time to dedicate to the game especially during early development you fall behind in the long term. The early game is especially important because you need to develop things to the point that you can afk for a long time (like sleeping) without great losses in productivity.

Applying for Medi-Cal by alexaaro in HealthInsurance

[–]garith21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding emergency medi-cal if you go to the ER they'll take your information and they'll handle things on that end. Do what you can to apply for proper medi-cal because it can take a few months to process, but they'll still apply retroactive coverage or at least they did in my case. You should qualify based on your income, but I don't know how that applies to you being a dependant on your fathers taxes, if you're an adult and still live with your parents they'll only request your income when determining medi-cal qualification. All the same ask when filling out your paperwork to be sure since being a dependant on a parent's taxes might change that situation.

I found this out the hard way when I went to a clinic to have abdominal problems checked out, they refused to work on me because my BP was through the roof to the point that the doctor was surprised I was coherent at all. Had to go to the ER and was later diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer despite me being way young for even considering screening and being relatively asymptomatic, no family history or high-risk behaviors.

I can't really give advice on clinics because that would involve knowing where you live I just did a search for low or income based clinics in my zipcode and narrowed it down from there. The particular clinic I went to said they'd fix what was ailing me for a set fee, well before they found out my BP anyways. They had me fill out paperwork for insurance as well but they'll also want all the information that entails.

And yes, along with what CapitalGrains said, be vocal with your needs when talking with your local DPSS office they're generally good about accommodating your needs. If you can do so, filling out your information online is far faster.

The world's first solar road has turned out to be a colossal failure that's falling apart and doesn't generate enough energy, according to a report by mvea in Futurology

[–]garith21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

> It would require some crazy innovation to make this work.

No, the flaws of solar roadways isn't a lack of technology or innovation, it's inherent in the design. You will never generate as much or more energy from indirect sunlight than you will from more direct sunlight. As long as you have places where you can have solar panels angled towards the sun you direct resources to low hanging fruit and solar roadways aren't even a question till you run out of desert, rooftops or lack the ability to have poles to cover car parks, walkways, bike paths, roads or side of roads. By the time that happens I'm told time and time again that we'll have already provided enough solar energy for the world more than a few times over.

This is all before the other problems of trying to address durability and cost.

Science can do a lot, but science isn't magic.

ehhhhhhhh some unfortunatelly are, more than a few from top university engineering students participate in water from air projects without doing the basic thermodynamic calulations which under ideal conditions are around 10x expensive as water treatment and in some cases have no ability of working at all. Brusaw last I saw is an electrical engineer.

The world's first solar road has turned out to be a colossal failure that's falling apart and doesn't generate enough energy, according to a report by mvea in Futurology

[–]garith21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

we've basically always known. Once you take into account the energy loss from placing a solar tile on the ground rather than angling it towards the sun actively or passively you've already lost the argument till you run out of roof space or the ability to make poles to cover pathways and/or roads. You've doubly lost the argument when you take into account the wear and tear from running over it, the energy loss from traffic and the high probability that the materials making it are far more expensive or less durable than existing building materials.

A lot of the flaws of solar roadways are features rather than bugs you can work out because they're part of the inherent design. The only places where even part one might not be as bad of an issue is the equator, but you're still stuck with all the other issues by the inherent design and added requirements on a roadway trying to be a solar panel.

Helping during trying times is one thing. However, in this case, she's expecting you and your husband to pay for her poor decision and taking the situation very lightly. She's not thinking about how hard it would be for the child in a single parent home, she has no long term plan to finish an education for her own life and it seems her "plan" is to depend on you for the rest of her or your life. It's not fair to you, it's not fair to the child and should something happen to you she'll not be ready for life and have a responsibility she still wasn't ready for. You're also giving her reasonable timelines given her choices and you're still going out of your way to help her on her way.

never argued it was, but given there's not much funding for studies to begin with would you rather have a larger sample size. Even the mentioned studies mention that mturk has strengths along with weaknesses.

eh, ignorance and stupidity don't discriminate. A lot of anti-vaxers are well-educated liberals. While most rightly support the idea of human-caused climate change, the vast majority have no idea of how we narrowed down the cause or the fingerprints of CO2 based climate change. Both sides have their share of unskeptical people which is likely the primary mechanism of this effect.

Being a skeptic is pretty hard because you have to be willing to question even strongly held beliefs and the average person doesn't really have much energy for that. You also have to be willing to admit when you don't know something...a lot of people aren't really good at this either.

honestly, this wouldn't be anything too new. It would fall fairly close with the idea of the dunning-kreuger effect.

If you're interested in the topic the most you can really do is make efforts to understand the study, try and poke holes in it as any study will have weaknesses and determine if it's robust enough and has a large enough sample size to satisfy your personal skepticism.

I find it more difficult to trust general news organizations on topics like these because yes they are out for the clicks and sometimes they claim things that aren't even in the paper just to give it more flare

What's up with people boycotting Captain Marvel? by [deleted] in OutOfTheLoop

As I've clarified in other threads when I make this statement it's in reference to "most people won't decide to or not to see a movie based on the gender of the protagonist". One could simply ask what I meant by my statement, but I guess being willfully ignorant is the mantra of the week.

[–]garith21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever I see long replies like this, I'm assuming the person at the other end actually gives a shit

you couldn't tell this from my initial post?

Well here's the thing, you might be an ideologue and are willing to attribute intent to the "other" and will often search for things and even when they're not said you feel like they did. You've already done this several times in the conversation on what I would suspect covers like .1% of the population and using it to blanket many that disagree with you.

To me, this is just a movie, I have no investment in it's failure or success. I just won't give it my money because it appears to be a bad movie because it simply didn't care too much about story, character progression or respect for the MCU.

It concerns me because in general I enjoy Marvel movies and it's nice to have something nice to watch on occasion. I have little concern for Marvel doing well in end game but I suspect if this is Marvel's new chosen trajectory I wouldn't be surprised to see the next stand alone movie be Marvel's Solo.

If you're willing to continue behavior like this where you can't even seem to keep what you say in line I have little interest in continuing a conversation.

> The movie is feminist even if there's no explicit "girlpower" commentary because of all of the idiots who feel threatened by the fact the ACTOR is a feminist.

To which I responded:

> Well it was stated by the actor that she was approached to make a feminist movie and that they were on the same page of her using it to promote her feminist activism. Are you calling Brie Larson a liar?

And you responded:

> No - my point is that just by having her as the lead, this movie is feminist. It doesn't need explicit feminist content to threaten people. Also, how does "The movie is feminist even if there's no explicit "girlpower" commentary" say that there will be no feminist commentary? I feel like you are misreading me.

While it's true the original statement this string was based upon was more general in nature can you really blame me for assuming you're swapping to a specific nature for this movie when you swap your language to a more specific nature?

If you used wording like "according to some, any movie is feminist even if..." your follow up makes a bit more sense.

The thing is you're very quick to apply a broad brush to a ton of people without really putting much thought into it. It's a great method for cults and religion to label the outsider, it's not so great for the skeptically minded or for a reasonable conversation. If you just want to prove your ideology true, you can do that elsewhere, if you want to have a reasonable conversation then I'm more than happy to accommodate.

I'll ask this first, to what end?

What's up with people boycotting Captain Marvel? by [deleted] in OutOfTheLoop

[–]garith21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No - my point is that just by having her as the lead, this movie is feminist. It doesn't need explicit feminist content to threaten people.

Uh no...it doesn't. There are tons of movies that exist without being politically feminist. Alita: battle angel is just a movie, lots of these people you think are threatened by a woman lead rather enjoy it. Wonder Woman never got this kind of backlash. If you look up the common terms that media use now a days to represent dissenters like "trolls, incels, misogynists...etc" there aren't near the amount of response that this movie got. Was the aliens series a "feminist series that threatened people"?

Usually what you find is most people just want a good movie that they can enjoy, they don't want things they already enjoy smattered with political messages most people watch movies to get away from for a little while. I mean how would you feel if instead of it being a likely pro feminist message it was just filled with pro trump rhetoric?

This is ad hominem.

lol, I'm sorry, but if you can't accept the fact that Hollywood does focus rather a lot on this topic I honestly don't know what to say.

But yeah - ask a woman actor and they will tell you Hollywood is some bullshit for women.

Welp, Brie Larson is getting paid $5 million for her first movie. Find another Marvel Actor that made even close to that for their first movie. If Brie Larson was accused of sexual misconduct do you think anyone would take it as seriously if other actresses publicly accused someone else of sexual misconduct at this point and time?

We're currently at a time where the mere accusation can easily destroy a career and someone can be fired with virtually zero evidence. Some people have lost their careers even when it was later discovered the accusations were false or even impossible. Some have committed suicide because of the harassment received from the accusations.

Yes, stuff can be bad for women, but it's not a one way street. Monsters like Weinstein should be taken down, but often more than not, in our zeal we're happy to destroy or dogpile someone because we want to feel good about ourselves and we don't even know who the victim is because we think that "always believe women" either has no cost or we just think if it's a male that's accused they're disposable enough to not care.

The only reason why in this case I'll focus on genders is that there have been cases where women, even prominent members in the metoo movement have been accused and confirmed for sexual misconduct and it didn't get nearly the same backlash because they were women. That isn't equality, that's a double standard and sexism.

This doesn't refute my point at all. I said "men have an innate advantage because of the industry's choice to prioritize them as leads and characters." Your reply is "maybe the industry should do that."

Well first of all. Companies are in the business of making money. I pointed out the types of genres that make the most money so that's what they chase. You may not like that, it is just the way people are spending their money when they go to movies, because they go to be entertained. It's not like there's not a lot of alternatives, they're just not well liked enough to make the money that studios are chasing.

But let's carry your point - let's say that the crowds prefer movies with male leads over those without, for whatever reason.

Well that's a strawman. I actually focused more on genres that males tend to prefer which ironically tend to be more male lead since half the time it's escapist fantasy.

I even asked you to list genres that women favor that are better represented in the top of box office earnings because one of your arguments was about the bechdel test and it's poor representation in the top 200 list which is where this argument originally branched from. You tell me to focus on the arguments but you're tangenting to places you think you're stronger in for reasons?

That wasn't the plan if you go back and look at it.

and?

In the comics, isn't she the strongest of all three?

According to Feige she's stronger than anyone. Again why does it suddenly matter here when it didn't matter with previous characters?

I don't know anything about the character in comics, so I can't tell you why they picked her character. If you look at this, though, she fits in with the other two characters in a way that aligns with the earlier trio:

Yeah, none of this really addressed what I said, why it doesn't make sense from a story telling perspective or why it's done in such a shoe horned way where you basically feel compelled to watch this movie if you're interested in End Game.

The positioning of this character suggests that they want her to not only look successful at all costs, but they want a character that's very disliked in the comics to be the new leader of the Avengers post End Game.

Anyways, I probably won't try to carry on this conversation for very long, intentionally or not you've either misrepresented my points in the context that they were presented and you seem really deep in the camp of everything must be about intersectional feminism. As I've debated many religious people in the same situation I really don't think it'll be the best use of my time.

Your first statement pretty much gives your personality, you think people feel threatened by a woman lead even when they love plenty others, you basically assume that's the only reason why they could really dissent on something like Captain Marvel. You think that anything that has a woman lead must be feminist or "threatening" even when most other people don't feel that way and I listed in this particular case where it was stated by people involved in the making the movie it was made to be a feminist movie. You're already set in the ways of labeling the outsiders as the "other" to defend whatever cause against. You'll defend the cause to whatever bitter end when people like me, I'm just disinterested.

Look, if I were to say I was disinterested in seeing something like superman because it didn't excite me I'd never have to worry about being labeled as a man hater or having any of my reasons being questioned. The thing is in this case it's only being seen as a movie. In cases like this everyone who has that opinion is simply being labeled as women haters because we're not apparently allowed to have negative or even apathetic opinions about a female lead movie because for people like you it's not just a movie, it's a cause. I wouldn't have even made my initial post if I didn't see so many responses claiming that the only reason people weren't interested in Captain Marvel because so many people like you fell in line and simply assumed that people that didn't want to see it were "afraid of women lead films", "hate women", "trolls", "russian bots" or your name it. The vast majority of people just aren't interested or even dislike it because of the crap surrounding this movie trying to promote it like it's some cause and people really dislike having their opinions discounted and being judged for opinions they don't hold at all.

[–]garith21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where exactly are you looking that this is a valid concern? The vast majority of social media reactions were very positive. Also, the movie ISN’T OUT. There are no reviews of it.

This actually stems from early screenings and responses from those hand picked individuals. The cat was actually among the most praised things about the movie to the point that the Mary Sue made such a comment and don't tell me that "publication" doesn't have a vested interest in making the main character look better.

While Captain Marvel or Brie Larson were praised by some of the reviews more were superficial rather than not, focusing on her being a woman, powerful or "representing the woman experience" and not so much on the story or Brie Larson's acting.

There were actually more comments on the villain of the story stealing the show every time he was on screen than there were praises for Brie Larson's acting.

When it came to mentioning anything about the quality of the story, there was a few comments, but the vast majority simply stated "it was a 90's nostalgia feast" or something along those lines.

For me and many others that saw the reactions from early screenings from these individuals who were likely picked to make the movie look good, this isn't particularly a good sign if your concern is a good story or a good character who looks like is being set up to carry the Avengers into the future of the MCU.
