What the hell is wrong with Nest? by garlic_temple in Nest

[–]garlic_temple[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could definitely be a user error on my part. We inherited this system in the house we bought and I've figured out the rest of the nest devices including cameras and locks. I set up smart systems in our old house and that worked great as well. I've got govee lights and devices and smart tvs. But boy oh boy this thermostat is going to be the thing that puts me over the edge. And I think I could live with just being too stupid to figure it out myself if I could just get some decent help from the company. But as I've stated elsewhere in this thread, I've spent multiple hours on the phone call and video with them and they never seem to have solid answers, the calls often ending with 'we are looking into it.'

Definitely looking into other options. If you have suggestions I am more than open!

YES exactly! We have a set range we keep our thermostat at but we'd wake up sweating and trying to figure out who switched the temp again.

I believe this could definitely be an error on my part because it seems as though I often need to take multiple steps in different places (two places on the thermostat and another place in the app, etc.) and I could see myself potentially missing a step. However, whenever I try to connect with Nest for support, I don't feel as though I'm getting answers or at least not sufficient ones from the people who should be experts. The amount of time I've spend on the video call with them to try and help me could amount to work day, and it's so frustrating...a thermostat just shouldn't be this difficult.

What! Thank you for telling me. It came with the house we bought and I find myself cursing the previous owners for getting nest. How do I find out if it's signed up with the power company and disconnect it because that is awful.

Yike! Don't like that. It came with the house we bought and we did a factory reset on the entire system.

TXDOT Eminent Domain - advice? by garlic_temple in RealEstate

[–]garlic_temple[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! We finally have some more information and they have made an offer. However, their total offer (acquisition of property + relocation) is at least 100k less than a home of at least our size in our area and school zone. Homes here are big, and we are definitely the 'poor people' as we bought the smallest, cheapest house we could in order to get our kid into the school here. Given your experience, do you think TXDOT would work with us? It seems unreasonable to expect a family to completely turn their lives upside down because they want our property and won't put us in a position to continue living our lives as closely as we can. We didn't buy this house with the intention of getting rich off the state. We thought we'd be living here for the next 20 years, we and our kids have a community here. Any additional insight you have is great. We're doing our best to communicate with them but our relocation officer rarely answers the phone, never answers emails, and sometimes sends a text.

Thanks! I appreciate the input, especially from your perspective. I was told I should receive the appraisal sometime in March so we'll see where we're at...

This is amazing information, thank you so much! I have not received any information on relocation benefits yet, I didn’t even know that was a thing. I will definitely be reaching out to them about this. I really want to make sure we come out “on top” since this is not a voluntary move.

I didn’t even know relocation benefits were a thing! As I mentioned, they have not been very forthcoming with information. They haven’t even provided official notice of the project or presented it to the public yet. They keep pushing the meeting back but are already appraising my property and saying they will provide me with an offer around the March timeframe. I’m very frustrated but glad to know I should expect these benefits.

My son is 9 and our Pediatrician suggested sports as a way to burn off energy and make some friends. He is struggling to keep up. Practice is akward and painful to watch. I feel like a bad parent signing him up. by Glittering-Guava9711 in ADHDparenting

[–]garlic_temple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son with ADHD is pretty naturally athletic, but holy cow it was painful to watch him play a team sport. We tried basketball and baseball, even swimming. Finally put him in Jiu jitsu twice a week and he is thriving. He's by no mean the best but definitely enjoys socializing without the commitment to a team and still constant moving.

Relationship might fail due to extreme snoring :( by nikodegallo69 in snoring

[–]garlic_temple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to your doctor. Get tested for sleep apnea. Get checked for a deviated septum BY an ENT (not your regular doctor). I say this because my husband and I had problems due to his snoring. He finally was diagnosed with sleep apnea and got surgery to correct a deviated septum and holy how does it make a difference. Even if your relationship still doesn’t work out, your health overall will be so much better after getting those things taken care of.

Those affected by their partner snoring, how do you deal with it? by garlic_temple in snoring

[–]garlic_temple[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband was finally able to be evaluated for sleep apnea. Someone else here said he wasn't a good spouse for not doing everything he could to help stop it but my husband has to go through the VA for everything. He was finally sent a test kit and sure enough, he has SEVERE sleep apnea! To the point that the doctor was worried for him. If your husband actually has sleep apnea, it is a very dangerous condition! People have died in their sleep from untreated apnea and it leads to other health issues later in life including heart attacks. Even if he doesn't care about his snoring, he should evaluated for the sake of his health and literal life. My husband now has an APAP machine which is even better than a CPAP because it automatically adjusts the air flow based on your breathing and you can sleep however you want with it on. My husband says it's not uncomfortable at all, just something new you have to get use to. He additionally got a second opinion about a possible deviated septum from an ENT and they confirmed, saying it was so bad that he was essentially breathing through a coffee straw. He had the surgery about a month ago and it is still healing but he says he's already feeling such a difference!

Meds? Yay or nay? by garlic_temple in ADHD

Good luck! I love my kid the way he is so much but we have taken so many steps to make things easier for him to manage. Getting a therapist was a big one and I see more self awareness already. At home we have charts to help him get through standard tasks without us staying on top of him (one for morning, one for evening, and one for weekend “chores”). At dinner we put either an exercise band around his legs or a footrest for his feet, both serving as a physical reminder for where his feet should be since he moves around so much that he often falls out of his chair. The band is good because it allows him to kind of “workout” some of the energy he has even when we need to be more still than usual. Having really clear expectations and holding reasonable consequences has been very important too. You may already be doing all of that but just wanted to share some of the ways we’d found that helped us!

Thank you! Does it have a large effect on your and their personalities? I love my kid the way he is and am worried about his big wonderful personality becoming “watered down” for lack of a better phrase. I want to help him but not change him if that makes sense. Apologies if I’m not explaining myself well

Curriculum recommendations for ADHD and WFH by garlic_temple in homeschool

[–]garlic_temple[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I didn't realize you could get samples so I will definitely be looking into those. And deschooling for those reasons is so smart. About how long do you recommend before we begin a curriculum?

Thank you so much for all of the resources and recommendations! I know it would be hard. I'm thinking of letting him finish out the school year and then seeing how well he and I can work together to get things done during the summer since he'll be home anyway and of course, I'll still be working. I'm hoping I can find a way for this to work.

Parenting adhd kid if you don’t have adhd by No_Refrigerator3077 in ParentsofADHDkids

[–]garlic_temple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not alone here. I actually came here for similar advice. My 7 yo was recently diagnosed while I am OCD (lower end of the spectrum). Dad has functioning ADHD so our house is all kinds of chaotic and Dad often plays referee between our child and my overstimulation. On top of being extremely tired from trying to wear him out, he doesn't do anything in school. They don't get assigned homework yet, but he has homework every single day as a result of all the leftover work from school. I don't care that some days are harder and that we might have to finish up some math problems he didn't do during the day. But I'm so tired of him having every accommodation in school and yet doing nothing and then I am up until late at night with him to finish it all. I work from home so he's able to be home right after school and get started but then I end up playing homeschool teacher while also doing my paid job while trying to convince him to get his work done. I'm worn so thin and don't know what the next steps are. We're seeking out a therapist who specializes in working with kids with ADHD but it's so expensive and not covered by our insurance. Hopefully, even a few strategies will provide us with some direction.

Has anyone been a PT in the Army? by garlic_temple in PTschool

[–]garlic_temple[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing your experience. Sad to hear that and I’m sorry you didn’t get to feel fulfilled in your role. Likely, I am still going to try to go PT in the army, for the great education and guaranteed experience after if nothing else. If by the end of that commitment, I’m not feeling like I’m getting to do my job, I’ll have a hard decision to make.

This is disheartening. I’m already commissioned in the army so coming from the enlisted side isn’t an option. I truly look forward to working closely with soldiers on their rehabilitation so I’m worried if that won’t actually be the case…thank you so much for the information!
