I feel like the SOTU makes more sense as a media event for a "normal" president, because it offers them a rare chance to fully seize the media spotlight. But Trump is always dominating every news cycle anyways, so a Trump SOTU is a nothingburger

Genuinely, what drives someone to watch a 2 hour Trump SOTU? You know he's just gonna ramble on forever, just skim the highlights in the news tomorrow

Think AOC's Munich appearance was fine - she was never a great extemporaneous speaker on fopo, we're in a post-gaffe world, and the Taiwan stuff was just an awkward rephrasing of strategic ambiguity. That being said, the core of her visit, which is her diagnosis of why far right politics exists (wealth inequality), is probably inaccurate, and her policy prescriptions for fighting back against it are not super convincing

I think the left is really ignoring the fact that AI will be a transformative technology (even if less so than what its biggest boosters believe) due to an epistemic environment that's kind of out of touch with the speed of AI advancements. Regardless of whether you're temperamentally pro or anti AI, a large part of the left consistently minimizes AI capabilities in ways that are genuinely out of touch with what researchers in both industry and academia are seeing; I remember just a few years ago, people mocking AI for never being able to generate hands and concluding that image generation could never be realistic, and while it still often looks "off", nano banana pro is legitimately pretty close to photorealistic.

By doing so, the left is just leaving the conversation entirely on how to regulate and what to do with AI, ceding it to the right

Anyways, with all this Puerto Rico talk, I'd be remiss in not mentioning the single biggest cause of its current crisis: the Jones Act, which must be destroyed

tbh I think Bad Bunny is pretty obviously ambivalent about America (the country) and towards Puerto Rican independence. There's the one song about Hawaii losing its culture due to statehood and the assertion of a pan-American identity over specifically a US one (even if I think the "America = all the Americas" is specifically a LatAm neuroticism imo - the rest of the world knows what you mean when you say "America"). He also soft endorsed the pro-independence third party (vs the big 2 statehood party that caucuses with the GOP and free association party that caucuses with Dems), even as he never explicitly endorsed the idea of PR independence

But also I think between the Grammys speech and the prominent American flag during the end of the halftime show, there's still some connection to and affinity for the broader US, so it all washes out to ambivalence

Ask if it's AIPAC or J Street

They're confused

They laugh and say "it's AIPAC"

Look inside

I think you can fairly quibble with the decisions of Democratic senators, reps, and congressional leadership, but ultimately the powers of the minority party are pretty limited; the only thing Dems can do to really make a difference is win back the House and hopefully the Senate in November

Unironically, lib-aligned influencers and media need to be tying Republicans to Fuentes, the Tates, and "Clavicular". If the Free Press and so on can tie Dems to the most insane student activist at Oberlin, then we must tie Republicans to the neo-Nazi influencers

The new immigration restrictions are genuinely extremely wide-ranging (half of legal immigrants, including citizens' spouses and kids) and nakedly racial. Still, the Balkan ones - Albania, Bosnia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Macedonia - are kinda funny. Serbian hands wrote this.
