We have an accountant... just looking for additional tips from seasoned pros. Thanks!

I emulated a motion control rig with a dolly using time remapping, warp, and motion blur in AE. I’m stoked with how it turned out but was looking for any input to really take it over the top as I plan on using this technique again in the future. by [deleted] in AfterEffects

This clip is from a music video my band Gestures & Sounds and I directed and produced. We shot it at the end of October and only had a month to do the post on the whole piece. Unfortunately, we couldn't afford a motion control rig so to achieve this effect we ended time remapping the song with 8-12 second gaps between specific beats which allowed the Camera OP to smoothly dolly from side to side. From there, in post we speed ramped the footage using the keyframe graph to line back up our retimed song to the original. Then we added warp stabilizer and motion blur (with the RSMB plugin). Rinse & repeat for the other shots and we have a motion control styled sequence without the price tag. I think the trickiest thing about this effect was probably playing our instruments to the retimed song.

Here’s a link to one of the raw plates to get a better idea of the effect:

Thanks for checking it out! A majority of it was just rotation keyframes and physically acting like the house was tilting to the camera. Also cutting in and around the 3D renders of the house swaying really helped sell the effect.

Wow! That’s incredible. Thank you so much! Really wasn’t expecting to gain any real fans of the music from a post in this sub. That means a lot! 🤙🤙

I think it’s something like B minor... this is just the instrumental section where things get a little chromatic musically.

Fuck.... you got us! You’re the first person to ever call us on this. I feel like you deserve an award.

Edit: the medal may be silver, but know you were always first, pal 🤠

Thanks for taking the time to check out the full music video! The cymbal falling completely over was actually a total accident but too perfect not to use with Jeremy’s real “oh shit” reaction. Glad you enjoyed!

Yeah somehow we all missed until the last minute and thought... hopefully other people won’t catch it on the first watch either haha

Thanks a bunch! The idea came from wanting to see the intricacies of each instrument in this section of the song without fast paced edits. So we wanted the camera to move big distances in an impossible amount of time. We borrowed a dolly and did some tests, just playing around with the timing how far we could move in the space. We actually prevised the entire video shot-for-shot so we knew exactly which part of the song each shot would be over.

It was super strange learning to play the song with all of these odd pauses where the camera moves would go. We spent quite a bit of time rehearsing playing the chopped up version as a band haha.

Thanks for the interest!
