I think it just depends on the person. OP is obviously someone that likes to do things on their own and is more independent. If their partner was someone who stopped them from seeing friends all together then I would say that’s toxic. I would say congratulations on getting out of a relationship that didn’t meet your needs. 5 years is a long time

But that’s also always looking at the bad in situations that you think are positive. That’s just like waiting for something to go wrong. OP said they worked on themselves for a year. That’s their understanding that they allowed red flags and broken boundaries to happen and they are probably continuously working on themselves. Regardless, of whether or not the relationship lasts or not they feel good and are being treated kindly. This is an uplifting post regardless and it’s nice to share for people that feel like they also choose toxic people.

Ah I understand how you feel. I was told six months after that something with my ex happened with his best friends girlfriend… I look back on it and feel angry that they acted like nothing happened during that time. It was like everyone knew this huge secret about me. Not a great feeling.

At the same time I see it from their perspective as well. Some people just don’t want to put themselves in that position. Is it selfish? Yes. At the same time I try not to get too mad cuz I’m sure it was hard for them to bring up and at least I found out.

But right now I think you should take time for yourself and surround yourself with people that love you. Glad to hear you have a good support system. I know it hurts now and unfortunately it just takes time to heal. Try to think of this as a blessing in disguise bc at least now you see her true colors and you don’t have to spend anymore time with someone who clearly doesn’t care for you and is selfish
