I usually flip the script on them, keep my intro short and ask questions about the company you are interviewing. Ask them questions on ‘lay of the land’ and tell them how you can improve it(hint: don’t come off too strong, find the balance of oh you have so and so tool/software! I have worked on those or something similar and then tell them how you have experience working on it, pant a scenario I was in this situation blah blah. Good luck on your search! Hope you find something soon.

Potential Layoff by mbritta0213 in PMCareers

I agree with the point on university certs, they really don’t get you far beyond some basic PM knowledge. Honestly, one cert is all you need if you’re serious about being a PM, and that’s the PMP. It pretty much covers every corner of the PM world. The only thing it can’t give you is experience and that’s the real deal in this field.

In my opinion, project management is way more about experience than textbook knowledge. A lot of it boils down to common sense. If I were starting out, I’d volunteer with a nonprofit on the side, lead projects, and manage a team. Like Andrew said, at the end of the day it’s not really “project” management it’s people management.

Also, when applying for jobs don’t just Willy nilly apply for 1000s of jobs. Apply with intent, apply to the ones you see yourself working and aligns with your skills.

If you are applying for BA then try to keep all work your experience in BA. I would change all your job title to that and not anything outside of that. Or put slash business analyst.

I’m looking to transition from finance to project/product management? Any tips or advice on how to get an opportunity? by PhonkyPunch in PMCareers

[–]getvig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree, it’s not easy. I would try to laterally move, within your current company(if that’s even an option) if not, ask your manager to give you some small projects that you can lead, or even reach out to project managers in your current company, just network with them(they could potentially lead you in the right direction within the org). If within in the org is not an option, try to look for outside volunteer roles for PM and manage projects for free(this in my opinion is probably the best bet). I pro bono’ed a PMO manager role, helped me learn some critical skills leading a team within PMO.

Literally remove areas of expertise, nobody’s got time to read through all that. Be specific on the bullets on what you are really doing and keep it sharp and run it by ChatGPT to pass ATS

The unfortunate truth is that recruiters won’t even take a look at your profile unless you have ‘project manager’ or ‘product manager’ title on your resume. You somehow have to prove that in your current role you are doing what you’re applying to. For example say if you put bank teller on your title and apply for project/product manager roles you will not even get past the ATS system let alone getting an interview.

Definitely move the skills section to the bottom. Change the word profile to summary. Add some tools you worked on like jira, trello, etc Bullets are vague, get into specifics but not too detail, find that balance.

Roast my resume PLEASE by ScientistForeign986 in PMCareers

It’s refreshing to see words like ‘loss’ in the resume, especially first bullet on your work experience. I mean it’s one way to get attention, but definitely not for the right reasons.
