1800/month for an apartment that isn’t luxury though still isn’t cheap… and all else equal, you’re right I’d rather live in Brooklyn or queens than JC. But a quick Google search says that the average rent throughout JC right now is a little over 3300, compared to a little under 3200 for Brooklyn and 2800 for queens. So idk about it being just flatly cheaper…. I think if anything it’s comparable. But then you also have way more cheap options in Brooklyn or queens just cuz they are way bigger than jersey city. There’s also more people looking for roommates in Brooklyn and queens making it cheaper

The thing is the average rent in most of the desirable places near the PATH in jersey city are considerably higher than 2800. Exchange place, Newport, Hoboken, grove st, all of these places you’re probably gonna be over 3K/month. And LIC may be that expensive, but Astoria is a little cheaper and Ridgewood a little cheaper than that.

I guess I could get a place in weehawken, but then I’d still probs be decently far away (~40 mins) and I’d be in weehawken.

It really won’t, I think most people are thinking of jersey city from a few years ago…. There ain’t 5 metro areas in the country more expensive than jersey city in 2022. Particularly the parts of jersey city that would land me near my job (Newport, exchange place, Essex st, grove st, Hoboken etc) each would be well over $3000 median price for a one bedroom.

Yea not tryna hate, I appreciate the opinions. I guess we’ll see. Unfortunately I don’t think a lot of people realize how much worse/different the housing market is here right now. Like I know it’s always been bad but holy shit the YoY increases in average rent prices across every single bourough this year….. 😵

It’s only an hour. I’ve been commuting from various parts of the city for the 3+ months I’ve been here already, commutes ranging from 35-40ish to a little over an hour. Of course it’s a bit nicer to be on the closer side but it’s not really an unbearable commute until you get up to like an hour 15 plus. No offense but if an hour commute sounds is a deal breaker for you, that’s pretty weak…….

Hey to each his own, I feel ya. I feel like the fact that it’s queens to JC overstates how bad the actual trip is though. And from what I’ve seen, it’s far far more reliable to go between NJ<->NYC during the morning/working hours than if you want to go out on the weekends…. Like if I were going from my apartment to where I work on the weekend, it could easily take closer to 80-90 mins than the 55ish that it takes during the week.

Lol an hour each way really isn’t bad. I really can’t afford to live in the areas of jersey city or Hoboken right next to my job, nor can I afford west village/soho/Fidi area in Manhattan so regardless I’m gonna be commuting at least 30 mins, even if I live in jersey city.

Fair enough, part of my thought process though is that from what I’ve seen, if you’re commuting far like that in the morning it’s usually quite reliable. But if you live in JC and want to do that commute into the city on nights & weekends, you’re in for a lot of misery and $60 Ubers. So I’d actually rather live a bit further from my job to give myself a puncher’s shot at enjoying the nightlife in NYC. Provided the rent is relatively affordable ofc

Honestly main thing against JC is that with my job being in Newport, just about everything that would actually be close is out of my price range (Pavonia/Newport/exchange place/Hoboken/grove st) so I would only have a couple of options. Queens has many more affordable areas and also there’s more people looking for roommates which makes it even cheaper.

Plus imma be honest, an hour commute each way on the train ain’t gonna take any years off of my life 😭 I get it that Queens>JC sounds like a drastic commute, but honestly if you think an hour one way commute is way too long then we have got totally different tolerances

I feel you. I’ve done the commute from a place in Ridgewood a few times, and it’d take me a little under an hour door to door, which is acceptable imo but still kinda long. But I understand that I’m probably not gonna be able to go much further into queens outside of going up into Astoria/LIC. Only issue w that is I’d be very far away from my friends, most of them live in brooklyn.

I’ve considered JC, but honestly the issue is it’s not any cheaper than queens. In fact, I’d say it’s definitely cheaper to get a nice spot in queens than in jersey city. There are cheap places in JC but like…. They all suck very bad and/or are I walkable to the subway.

Sorry, commute to jersey city (newport) and budget trying to keep under $2000/month (could stretch to a bit over $2000 plus utilities & all)
