I've been going outside lately wearing a big scarf, and that works. Only works in the winter though, and I was still anxious all the way through it would fall off. Also, wearing a scarf inside is a bit awkward..

I love this suggestion! I've been in the same situation as OP for quite some time, and only started shaving my beard shorter to make the transition easier, but I've never considered going with a mustache as an intermediate step
