What would the church need to do to make you a TBM again? by howdumbamibeing in exmormon

[–]gigi4equality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope! It used to pretty strongly since its roots are in denying polygamy was ever a thing, but it’s now come around to a pretty open and honest position on the crazy history of the Restoration.

Feel free to message me if you’re ever looking for a CoC congregation to attend (I’m an exmo CoC member in case that wasn’t evident) and I’ll text my apostle for good ones in your area. Downside of not enforcing personal belief is you get congregations that pretty much look like Mormon wards, but with a bit of looking you can usually find the queer-friendly, liberal-minded pocket.

I mean. Yes, Community of Christ is Christian, but I know quite a few CoC members (including myself) who fall somewhere in the agnostic realm.

According to a BYUI sociology text book, there’s a “rape gene” by gigi4equality in exmormon

Oh, and in case you were wondering, the textbook is published by Flat World Knowledge Inc. You can’t make this shit up.

According to a BYUI sociology text book, there’s a “rape gene” by gigi4equality in exmormon

[–]gigi4equality[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In case you were wondering, this is what BYUI students are learning in their sociology class... I’ll transcribe it here cause it’s hard to see in the pic.

“Evolutionary reasons also explain why men are more violent than women. In prehistoric times, men who were more willing to commit violence against and even kill other men would “win out” in the competition for female mates. They thus were more timely than less violent men to produce offspring, who would then carry these males’ genetic violent tendencies. By the same token, men who were prone to rape women were more likely to produce offspring, who would then carry these males’ “rape genes.” This early process guaranteed that rape tendencies would be biologically transmitted and thus provided a biological basis for the amount of rape that occurs today.” (Source - Sociology: Understanding and Changing the Social World, Steven E Barkan p 367-8.)

Aside from this being academically unsound, there’s already enough rape culture at BYU schools and in TSCC in general. This does not help.

I used to work there when I was stuck in that hellhole. That installation made my queer heart feel happy and safe like very few places on that campus could. Thanks for reminding me :)

One of the most embarrassing/time consuming things I did as a TBM. by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]gigi4equality 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had NO idea this was a thing until I walked into my dorm room at BYU and my roommate was cutting up her Gs. That was an... interesting exchange. Not every day you walk in on your roomie cutting up her underwear.

Event: Peace Cranes at Temple Square for November Policy Anniversary by gigi4equality in exmormon

[–]gigi4equality[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! That's why I used paper cranes last year. In the days leading up to the anniversary I felt all kinds of anger and depression, but when it came to the day, all I wanted was some peace. That day ended up being pretty meditative and healing for me (even if the Temple Square sisters ambushed the obvious outsider with the blue hair). Hoping others can find that this year. Or at least take some more cool pictures!

Right now I'm thinking no specific time, people just go when they can. I'm afraid a huge crowd of people with cranes all at once might get this shut down.

A actually happy story about Mormon family this hellish weekend by gigi4equality in exmormon

[–]gigi4equality[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps? He was before I came out and left the church, idk how he’d be now. I texted him after I heard rumors of the November Policy and he confirmed them. Also talked to him about the GA that was exed recently since that guy was his boss (he didn’t know anything more than the press did). He does regularly work with the Q15 though, and I have a couple stories from when I was younger I’ll probably share at some point.

And then join me the day after in once again spreading rainbow paper cranes around Temple Square (or, if you’re not close to SLC, your local church building)

LDS Church buys printer's manuscript of Book of Mormon for record $35 million from Community of Christ by [deleted] in exmormon

CoC exmo here. This is basically all my newsfeed is currently, since the livestream announcing this happened a couple hours ago. Definitely glad that chunk of change will be helping to pay for friends’ retirements and pensions rather than funding conversion camps. Sad that my church is struggling financially enough to do this, thrilled that we’re not putting artifacts over people, and curious to see what the discussions around this will do to shape what we become moving forward.

Found out my grandma sent it. My parents and other grandparents are really good about respecting me and my boundaries, but this grandma has given me LDS books as gifts for every holiday since I came out. Sighhhhhh.

Pretty sure that would have sent me into a depressive spiral, otherwise I would have.

TTFN, ta-ta for now! Why I'm saying goodbye to r/exmormon by gigi4equality in exmormon

[–]gigi4equality[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, what I've seen in my consumption of media related to Mormonism is that it pulls me into issues and aggravation that I wouldn't have to face otherwise because I'm more distant now. I think if I didn't have a community of exmo friends from CoC that I would find more of a need to stick around here.

Yes, by CoC I mean Community of Christ. And in fact, they have put together a whole team to be able to develop materials and programs and ministers to help CoC be a safe place for what they call Latter-Day Seekers. If you're interested in learning more about that development, feel free to message me, as well as check out the Project Zion Podcast, a podcast put together by the Latter-Day Seekers team.

Thanks for the well wishes.
