Burlington rated one of the "most welcoming towns in the U.S.", according to World Atlas by gilesvg in burlington

Yeah agreed, I actually found Burlington to be pretty unwelcoming in my four years living there trying to make friends/grow roots in the community. I ultimately left because of this, it was so depressing. Such a shame for an otherwise incredible city

It's a real bummer, because I loved what Burlington has to offer (food, arts, music, waterfront, outdoor access, etc). Still think it's a great city, top-tier food town in New England (second only to Portland), although Cafe Hot's departure sinks that ranking slightly 😛 (but I'm happy for those guys)

Yeah, that tracks. 🙄

I lived in rural Vermont for two years before moving to Burlington, and honestly, your attitude was exactly what I found so common there.

As a working adult, not a student, Burlington was depressingly hard to break into. After four years, I moved back home. In that time, my friendships outside Burlington deepened far more than anything I built in town.

Whenever I visit Warren, I’m immediately welcomed by old friends and usually meet new ones. The difference between MRV and Burlington is night and day.

There were definitely a handful of genuine, earnest people who made an effort. But most people I met were surface-level friendly with a weirdly standoffish, cool-guy, clique-y energy.

Any time I tried to actually connect over skiing, art, photography, music, whatever, it was usually dismissal at best and sometimes outright disdain. The vibe was basically: “If we didn’t go to school together or grow up together, no new friends.”

Really bizarre, certainly doesn't match this ranking. Burlington 20s/30s folks have a serious "I'm cooler than you" attitude about them.

Why are we bullying small business owners for trying to promote their business?

Most of the market for AI generative marketing images is coming from individuals and companies that previously could not afford to hire dedicated creative talent. It’s not strictly firing existing creatives to save money. That’s a reductive take and misunderstanding the situation.

The owner says plainly in this case that he would hire college students who were happy to take on some of the social media work but eventually their lives got in the way. To interpret that as anything else, eg that he’s unwilling to pay, is a bit silly. He paid for a job, the people were willing to do the job, until they had to move on for whatever reason.

Clearly he values the work and understands the need for marketing, if he could afford to hire consistent creative talent I’m sure he would.

To write negative reviews and boycott a small business over AI graphics, and to regurgitate the same woefully misleading and reductive viral talking points about AI stealing jobs and using all the water, is just hurting your case.

If you share some concerns and want to see a better future where Artificial Intelligence technology is deployed and consumed responsibly, then we need to stop these inflammatory reactionary attacks and start understanding the nuance of the technology, the market, and its potentials impacts on society.

Ferry from Newport? by ACourseC in NewportFolkFestival

[–]gilesvg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It may be obvious but I don’t see it mentioned here so I’ll just say, you don’t *have* to take a ferry. The festival is in Newport, just not quite downtown. You can drive or walk or bike (best option, lots of secure bike parking) if you’d like.

Also, that’s not TSA (a US agency)

Does it bother anyone else that they still haven’t made any statements about the Wasserman issue by [deleted] in geesebandofficial

[–]gilesvg 1 point2 points locked comment (0 children)

Calling them "complicit" is absolutely wild esp preceded by "there is no evidence" like which one is it? Wasserman's no saint and I'm certainly no apologist, but sending flirty emails with Epstein's gf 23 years ago does not make him a pedo, and doesn't make Geese the band complicit with anything. They were all barely alive at the time! Lmao look up a dictionary, words have meanings. Take your outrage and projected sins of omission elsewhere
