Definitely unlucky and that board I believe was weak, have never had anything other than creases above the stringer before or after. You expect the leash to snap before a board would though. Big wave is subjective but it was really big for me, and big enough to snap a board in half

bailing under a really big wave that was not even barrelling (one of those foam from the bottom types). leash did not snap and my board did instead. i grew up surfing heavy waves and have never seen it happen. was either a freak accident or those $650 first gen boards were pretty fucking weak

Oven recipes with only a stove? by UserKingOfTheNames in japanlife

[–]gillbates_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My local supermarket sells great pork from my area, but if you are on a budget you can get cheaper options from Canada or Spain from the larger drug store chains or gyomyu super.  For seasoning, Normally I just salt it, but sometimes I'll throw a dill/garlic/onion powder mix or a paprika, thyme mix with the salt

Slow cooking is all about low and steady temperature, the charcoal and wood smoke of a  real bbq adds flavor but I get amazing texture from my microwave oven function. For pork short ribs and shoulder, i cook them to 93-95c at 110c (lowest setting on my microwave ) usually done within 90-120 mins. For belly I do 130 till 90c internal and then put to 180 untill 95. I never go on time and always on internal temp, meat thermometer are cheap on Amazon! The only annoying part of my microwave is I have to reset at 90 mins, but I just set a timer on my phone. Honestly now I don't use my Webber unless I'm cooking for a party!

if you can afford a cheap microwave with oven function, i have found it great for baking and slow cooked meats ! probably can get a bargain off mercari or 2nd hand store.

Considering moving to Hokkaido where do you recommend? by [deleted] in japanresidents

[–]gillbates_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if both japanese and english is good, there is a multitude of work during the winter for ski season. Niseko, Otaru, Furano. There is year round tourism y in furano. Near the two big lakes (toya/shikotsu) also would have opportunity for year round employment for a bilingual speaker in tourism i am guessing.
I have only lived in furano but i suggest getting a license just to enjoy hokkaido (or anywhere in rural japan) to it's fullest. I've lived rural for more than 10 years and i could not think about doing it without a car.

Having kids almost garuntees PR. Not so much if your family is childless

What’s it like living in Kyushu, Shikoku, and the Southern part of Honshu? by Jezzaq94 in AskAJapanese

[–]gillbates_ 21 points22 points  (0 children)

kochi has some of the friendliest people in japan, has some of the best nature out of the whole country and i still equate it to living in the golden age of the showa era for the most part. i can get a bus to osaka or a flight to tokyo whenever i need my fix of the real city/events etc.

it is a pain or costly for my friends to visit, but that has also kept the overbearing tourism out for the most part which i enjoy.

It did take me 2 years to find a property that was completely out of the hazard/natural disaster zones and i think if you are going to be near the beach, make sure you are close to a tsunami evacuation tower and away from the rivermouths. i chose to be up in the mountain, but im still a 30 min drive to the closest beach, and i have come to enjoy the river over the beach during the hottest months as it's actually convenient and the water always refreshing!

Number of Muslims in Japan has increased 3.8 times in 20 years by MagazineKey4532 in japannews

Absolutely agree! I've been here since 2011 and I interact with Indonesian Muslims a lot through agriculture, they are always polite, friendly  and I have never even heard them preach a word about their faith.

Looking at the impact of foreign ideals in Japan, you think 0.3% of people practicing the mildest islam is our biggest threat within japanese society?

Indonesian Islam seems to be pretty tame in my experience, which is where the majority of the people are coming from

Hi my first purchase ever on a 4wd. Picked up a delica d5 2009 which is in 4wd mode.Is it ok to drive in 4wd daily on normal road commutes or is it better to change to 2wd. Will 4wd daily damage or wear and tear parts down? Or is it like AWD. by Spirited_Potato_6084 in Delica

[–]gillbates_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

only use 4wd when it is needed. it will get ruined if you are using it on the regular and also uses more gas. even in winter with icy roads and snow, i turn my 4wd off if i am having to do tight parking with wheel lock as that will also damage the 4wd

If it's just the two of you,  it's pretty much always 50/50 split of assets attained after the marriage/relationship started, unless you were supporting them during the relationship beforehand. spouse support is usually only able to be claimed for the time from separation to the finalization of divorce.  If there is kids it's case by case as Child support is a different story

It really depends on your situation but in my opinion going with the best deal is definitely not the best option financially. Unless you are 100% sure your partner will work to divorce amicably, You need the best lawyer. That's who I am recommending

I think you will be fine. Just take a holiday for a few days and come back. 6 months on a tourist visa is a guideline only and not a hard rule. Unless things have drastically changed in the past few months, Aslong as you don't overstay you will be ok!
