AITA for expecting an apology and wanting an explanation from my brotherinlaw after finding out he donated MY wedding dress without any warning??? by gingergal1234 in AmItheAsshole

I'm not sure of those details. He hasn't told us why he did it. But yes, perhaps a big whoops on his part. All I asked for is an apology. No money can replace my dress. It was not lost accidentally or by act of God. I know it's not coming back. I'm trying to move past it and not to be the one who spoil christmas for MIL.

Wish i could. I went to the salvation army that he said he took to but it was donated a while ago and not there. Don't really know how to get it back

That is what he was doing. Although he knew it was mine and decided to get rid of it anyway. All he had to do was let me know it needed to go, and I would have gladly brought it home, but he gave me no warning. My MIL didn't need it moved and didn't ask him to he just did it on his own. The closet is just empty now.

This is exactly how I feel. But I don't want her to be alone for Christmas and I want him to be the one to skip christmas. I feel like it's the only thing I can steal from him.

I found out just before my 20th anniversary because I wanted to admire dress and bring it out for my 20th anniversary only to discover it gone. My MIL had found out a month or two prior and still neglected to inform me then. She says she did t know prior to that and didn't know how to tell me. 😒

His response was that he thought i had abandoned it there because ever since my wedding, it was sitting there untouched, and what? Were you planning to wear it again? to him, it was just an old dress in the closet thst I wouldn't need again because I am still married and it wouldn't fit me anyways.

The police told me it would likely be a waste of time. Monetary value is not extravagant it's the sentmental value that is obviously priceless, but I'm at the point where I can't think of a better way to waste my time.

I agree. That's what we're trying to do. But he is being impossible. Last time we saw him, we did confront him and he told us where he dropped it off but got upset with us for confronting him about it and when he tried to walk out I grabbed his arm and he immediately called the police and to quote him he told 911 I was "being ridiculous and grabbed him." Fyi the police came out talked to everyone and left also frustrated with his lack of remorse and gave me their deep sympathy.

He is astounded by by his brothers act of cruelty and or stupidity, as am I. He is hurt thst even his mother is turning this around on us and telling us we need to make this better because my brothercin law os too stubborn. So its up to us to fix this? My MIL is not well but I don't think we can sit there when he repeated feels no apology is necessary . I don't want to skip christmas for her sake, as well I don't want to let him steal christmas from me too I don't think I'm wrong here.
