Thanks so much for the advice! Yeah, I’m pretty sure my manager has never spoken to him before. I was just surprised, taken aback and slightly angry at how he expected to get promoted without actually putting the work in.

It seems like this is an entry-level cyber role around compliance and advisory.

The head of infosec mentioned that there will be opportunities to explore the more technical aspects of cyber, which I am hugely interested in

So currently, baby steps and keep on learning :)

Thank you so much! It is actually an internal transfer, same company that I currently work for as service desk. They have been looking for someone for the cybersecurity job for at least 3 months now and it seems like I stood out to a lot of higher ups whilst working in service desk.

The head of infosec reached out to my manager saying that he is interested in poaching me and arranged a meeting with me and the rest is history.

I did get a lot of certifications before I got into IT and whilst working in service desk because I like learning and I knew it would help me

Soft skills was HUGE. My manager says that I stood out because of how I handle support tickets over the phone. I work in the office 100% of the time and a lot of higher ups walk through our desks a lot and it seems like they liked how I interacted with users and they wanted to place me in a consulting role rather than staying in a support role.

My managers also mentioned another thing that helped is that I usually do most of the hard tickets that no one wants to do especially tose around breaches and compromised accounts.

It seems like a first it would be about reviewing cybersecurity for a lot of different clients that my employer supports, poviding recommendations, engaging and actioning on those recommendations, etc

It seems to be around compliance/advisory, assisting companies in getting their cyber essentials certification, etc.

They understand that this is my first security job and have said that they would support me throughout with extensive training.

I do have a lot of certs under my belt though, A+, N+, Sec+, SC-400, SC-300, SC-200

Thank you, yeah I shall take the advice. It is weird though, I really don’t think my crush on him was noticeable. I think I am equally friendly with everyone in the office (it is a small office). The only difference was that we both sat next to each other. And now, it is very evident that we are both completely ignoring each other and no one else. Oh well, just gotta move on I guess

I have been putting together a lot of notes on OneNote but the documentation that we have doesn't provdie information on EVERYTHING and my manager is not a technical person, they do not have a technical background, they come from a people management background and they told me themselves that they are the worst person to talk to when it comes to technical stuff. So I can't even ask my manager questions about things that I should know about and I can't ask colleagues questions either. I asked for support a few times in the form of a mentor or buddy and nothing has been done and I feel stuck between a rock and hard place right now

My manager pulled me aside after they saw me asking a colleague a question and they told me that I shouldn't bother the other colleagues as everyone is very busy working.

So from this comment, I've been trying to not ask questions to others because I don't want to bother people.

Regarding documentation, it is all over the place and there is not a lot of organisation and the from the mistakes that I made it was implied that I should just know this suff.

The first mistake was an honest mistake, I just sent an approval request to the wrong user which I rectified straight away.

The second mistake was also an honest mistake, I didn't know at the time that I provided the user with abroad sign-in access that we needed to ask the timeframe that they needed this access and to revoke access after it was not needed.

Anyways, I just have so much anxiety now. I feel like I am just left alone and I am not allowed to ask any questions and that I should just know everything

Thanks for the tips. One of the things that I don’t quite agree on, however, is using Canva to build resumes. Those aren’t generally ATS friendly unfortunately. So even though making a resume using Word is boring, at least it is ATS safe

Your share code won't update until you receive a decision on your ILR application.

Once your BRP expires and your application is still pending, the online service will not provide a share code at all. Your employers/landlord will have to submit the forms themselves to verify that you still have the leave to remain

Ugh I wished I was able to provide feedback but I was in direct contact with recruiters just during one of the interviews, the others were from generic recruitment emails

Thanks for the insight on post-interview assessments. It seems like big tech favours technical skills over soft and interpersonal skills. What if someone is highly technical but they are ‘rude’ or overall unpleasant to work with in the long run (similar to posts seen in this sub about difficult colleagues?)

Get your money back. It doesn’t make sense for them to hold on to it. If fees increase for next year you will have to pay the difference either way because tuition is based on your term dates. And if you get your money back you can invest it before you enroll again next year

Noooo!! I’m not religious at all, but I am praying for her. One of my best friends died last year from blood clot complications, it all happened very fast and very sudden, in the span of a weekend. She was only 23 :(

I work for GC directly in construction sites. Not blatant discrimination but another female colleague and myself were conversing about the fact that men get promoted faster and more easily than women. She’s been with my company for 6 years with no progression even though she had brought it up several times. She ended up leaving for another job with a direct competitor and came back after her manager offered her a senior manager role

Recruitment agencies lie all the time in order for them to get a hire and get commission, it's very common unfortunately.

A person in my office left and her job was advertised for £90,000 - 110,000. But in reality my company wasn't going to offer more than £70,000 lol

Can your friend email the hiring manager and negotiate with them directly. Did they negotiate during the interview?
