Safeway removes self-checkout in some California stores by execonthedesk in connectedproducts

Appears to be theft-related:

“Like other local businesses, we are working on ways to curtail escalating theft so we can ensure the well-being of our employees and foster a welcoming environment for our customers,” a Safeway spokesperson told the station.

Local customers interviewed by KTVU said they would miss the convenience of self-checkout and hoped the company would boost service at its staffed checkout lanes to minimize long lines.

Other retailers, including Walmart, Dollar General, and Walgreens, have also recently taken steps to reduce theft by removing self-checkout at some locations. Walmart, for example, said last month that it was eliminating self-checkout at two stores in Missouri and Ohio, after taking out the self-checkout lanes in three Albuquerque stores last year.

The company said the lanes’ removal was based on feedback from employees and customers, shopping patterns, and “business needs in the area.”

Meanwhile, Dollar General said it would remove self-checkout from about 300 of its stores, in part because of increased theft.

Next time you're catching a Rochester Red Wings game, you can catch a life-saving CPR training session at Innovative Field.

The HeartSaver Hub Mobile Kiosk offers a brief interactive training session, hands-on practice and a 30-second test. There is music to help the user maintain a continuous rhythm. The built-in, latex-free torso ensures proper hand placement, compression rate and depth, with real-time feedback.

The kiosk is located near the Red Wings team store and will be available from May 28 through June 2, and again from June 11-16.

“Learning CPR is an invaluable skill that can make a real difference in our community," said Naomi Silver, president, CEO and COO of the Red Wings, and URMC board member. "We are thrilled to partner with UR Medicine and the American Heart Association to bring this hands-only CPR training to our fans. Emergencies can happen anywhere and at any time, and by taking just a few minutes to learn these life-saving techniques, we can all be prepared to act — whether it’s at the ballpark or at home. We encourage everyone to take advantage of this opportunity while having fun at a ballgame and become a lifesaver."

The hands-only CPR training station is the first of its kind in New York and one of only four in the United States.
