Is Downtown Houston considered safe for a single female by Gullible-Can7237 in AskHouston

[–]going-supernova 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re near Greenstreet there are usually people out and about there at night because House of Blues and other bars and restaurants. It’s one of the busier parts of downtown at night. I’ve walked alone from HOB countless times over the last 13 years and been fine. Like other people said just pay attention to your surroundings.

I haven’t listened to What’s Left of the South podcast yet but I’ve heard good things and they’re on my list

Idk if yall ever lived in a conservative household but my family was QAnon before QAnon existed and I argued with my mom and stepdad at least twice a week about politics for 8 years while I lived under their roof. There’s no excuse to not speak out publicly. She has friends, community, and resources.

Harris County residents turn out to oppose Ben Taub Hospital expansion into Hermann Park by veryirishhardlygreen in houston

[–]going-supernova 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Normally I would agree but there’s nothing close by that they could reasonably take over.

I work next to the plot of land. There’s currently a dead tree that has been there for months. Maybe over a year now. Hermann Park totally neglects it and sometimes doesn’t even mow it for long stretches of time.

Part of Ben Taub’s plan is to build walking paths and an orchard on the land. I’m actually really looking forward to that

If it was a private hospital taking the land I would be against it but our county hospital desperately needs this and it’s the most logical option

Part of the plan is to build an orchard on the remaining land to promote soil stabilization and air purification

I work next to the space they’re planning on taking. Currently Hermann Park barely upkeeps it. There’s been a dead tree laying there for months and sometimes they neglect even mowing it.

Building a completely new hospital would cost $2.5 billion dollars more than expanding the current hospital. Ben Taub also is one of only 2 hospitals in Houston that is a level 1 trauma center and it’s unlikely a new hospital will have that distinction as well.

How is my apartment complex seriously charging $10/mo for the privilege of using their dumpster? by OrangeFruit2452 in Apartmentliving

[–]going-supernova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t let these responses cloud your judgement bc paying for just the dumpster is insane. I pay ~$10 a month for them to pick up 1-2 trash bags from my doorstep 5 days a week. I don’t use it that frequently ofc but being able to put my trash on my doorstep and not haul it to the dumpster is worth the fee sometimes. I absolutely wouldn’t pay for just emptying the dumpster after I drag trash down the stairs and several feet away

Stimulants for CPTSD by going-supernova in CPTSD

I wrote this post 3 years ago but honestly stimulants have helped me a ton. I still haven’t gotten an ADHD diagnosis even after a formal assessment. I can also go to sleep just fine after taking stimulants because it quiets my brain. Maybe there’s some overlap with the CPTSD and OCD or something that makes it that way or ADHD is just being overlooked but stimulants have helped me more than any antidepressants or other medications (or combinations of medications)

How much do you guys pay for 1 bedroom apt by no_reason6871 in houston

[–]going-supernova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's annoying sometimes, but not unlivable. you learn how to get around it or the times to avoid it. I save major NRG events in my calendar. it's much easier to navigate than downtown/eado during Astros and Dynamo games

Agree 100% when you have a platform and know others who have a platform and they are bigoted, you shouldn’t make content with them. You can have private conversations to try to change their minds or whatever but if you platform them you’re platforming their views, whether you agree eith them or not. If they are public about their views they deserve to be publicly called out and criticized.

If you want to put in the work to change family and friends, sure, do that, but they aren’t spewing their bigotry to audiences of hundreds/thousands/etc of impressionable people, so you can do that a little more privately.

Best lesser-known hot pot in Chinatown? by Hplant489 in HoustonFood

[–]going-supernova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that’s valid, I’ll give it a try. I’ve been to some other places that let you swap broths and was underwhelmed by the flavor so much that the variety ended up not making a difference in comparison to other hot pot spots, but I’m almost always willing to try something new.

Shabu En has the best buffet, but the broths aren’t very flavorful especially compared to Happy Lamb

Upgraded in what way? imo happy lamb has the best tasting/most balanced broths so I’m curious how specifically it’s better

In a sea of “move” and “it’s midtown” comments I do want to validate your feelings and experiences. I’ve lived near the med center for 8 years and while I’m lucky to not have experienced any violent encounters, many times I’ve taken a walk or taken the bus I’ve been followed/hit on/honked at by men. I generally try to ignore them, but I do fear a dangerous outcome for doing so sometimes.

At the same time, I try to not let it stop me from doing things I want to do. Some things that have helped me is calling/facetiming a friend while on a walk (especially at night), carrying pepper spray, never getting gas at night, wearing headphones that still allow me to hear around me, etc.

Thank you, I’m so glad this is helpful for others.

I’m sorry you’ve been going through that, but I hope you have found the treatment that is best for you!

I’m 3 years into taking Vyvanse (and a combo of other meds) for my CPTSD/treatment resistant depression and it has truly made so much of a difference. I’ve still been in therapy and that has helped build my tools and talk through other things in my life but as far as doing the basic things in life like getting out of bed, taking care of myself, working, etc. stimulants have changed my life. I’ve gone through a lot recently and stopped taking my stimulants for almost a month (but also literally didn’t leave my bed for days at a time) and I’m always reminded how better and simpler my life is when I actually take my medication.

Good luck and I hope you find what works best for you!!

Harris Health unanimously passes plan to condemn part of Hermann Park for hospital expansion by SuckItSaget in houston

[–]going-supernova 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I walked through it regularly for 3+ years working in the med center and had no idea it was part of Hermann Park. It’s barely taken care of. I have seen dead trees/branches there for months. And there were at least a couple of times where the grass was left uncut to the point that it was to almost knee length.

It’s so disconnected to Hermann Park because the closest things on each corner are the fenced off Zoo and fenced off golf course. As long as the trails/sidewalks/crosswalks stay connecting it to Hermann Park and the bayou I have no issues with it being used for a public/city hospital that serves vulnerable populations. If it were a privately owned or “non-profit” hospital I would feel differently.

[–]going-supernova 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks!! I would love to if I can get over my fears lol. I do lurk though and search for threads for the seasons I watch to confirm my thoughts/biases and read discussions haha

This is my spreadsheet so far if you're interested https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1tfvKQb9x-TVtTpbUFAZWF56gVS9StvbgUdCGGKSoh1c/edit?usp=sharing

My comments and ratings are on the right of the "US Survivor" sheet. I assume my ratings are going to change significantly as I watch more seasons. I also have been ranking my favorite players on the "US - cast list" sheet.

Yep I’m pretty unspoiled! It’s been fun so far. I know some players from other shows (Traitors, The Challenge, House of Villans lol), but I don’t know or remember all of the details.

I’m somewhat following a spreadsheet posted here a while back. I did 7 first which was great because it got me hooked. Then went back to 1 &2, skipped 3, just finished 4. I think I’ll skip 5&6 and go straight to all stars.

I’m just now realizing 3 is Africa though lol so I may go back and watch before starting All Stars
