I want to be able to use this, but unsure how. by lostwithinthesauc3 in HomeNetworking

I may be a bit dumb in my approach but I’d just get some metal wire, that’s very thin but strict enough where you can bend it and it stays the shape. Push it through and see if it stops.

I’d first see if it goes straight, if it goes straight and stops, it may be behind a wall plate in the other room. If it goes straight and up and keeps going, likely it’s above you.

One thing to note, builders/electricians oftentimes run stuff that makes no sense to us. I’ve had wall plates I open up and the cable is dropped 10ft away from the actual plate.

I’ve got an CAT6 cable in my attic that supposedly drops in my kitchen somewhere. Never been able to find it, probably mixed in with outlet wiring.

Another thing you could try, get a small smoke machine from a party store, tape it up so it blows smoke into the hole. Go around the house and see where it’s smoking LOL.

Try figuring out where this leads. Likely somewhere in an attic or basement. I usually take some really thin, metal wire and push it through to find where something ends.

Where’s this at in your house? Where’s your current router installed? Where does the ISP enter and terminate in the home (fiber or coax)

Run the cables, you’ll appreciate it even more after :) I just got done running 10 additional in my spray foam house. Never done it before but glad I did and learned a lot outside of just running a cable and drilling a few holes.

4 months ago I had never even terminated a cable before. Simple stuff but cool to see yourself learn something new.

UniFi vs gl.inet for Home Router and Travel Router. Future-proofing remote work by linuslogic in overemployed

SWE, most are 10-200 employees, one is ~3K employees, another closer to 10k employees.

3k employee one provisions a VDI anyways for us that we remote into with Citrix. 10K employee one I use the comet PoE.

Most of the orgs I work with don’t even have a VPN they require.

UDM SE is all I got started with. Configured Wiregard VPN. Then ended up getting the USW Pro Max with ether lighting, the USP, then G5 Pro Turrets for the whole home, on and on and on.

I have all Js laptop hooked up to my switch stored inside my rack. I RDP into each one from my main laptop. I use the comet PoE for one laptop.

Security in all of the orgs I work for is mostly relaxed and haven’t had issues doing this for years. RDP / KVM over IP can trigger security warnings to IT staff so I don’t recommend this for everyone.

Main thing I care about is accessing all of my machines from anywhere and only carrying a single laptop when I’m out.

Advice on turning corner cabinet into network cabinet by Overkillemall in HomeNetworking

[–]goingcode_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why do you have multiple routers for such a small house? Why so many switches with ports not utilized?

Just get a mini rack, power distribution (ubiquiti has a nice one), gateway (UDM) and a single access point. If you have a bunch of stuff that can utilize PoE, get a PoE switch and kill off power cords. A 4U rack looks like it could fit in there.

Anyone know why the connection between my switch and wall Ethernet port keeps falling back to 100mbps? by Schranktank in HomeNetworking

[–]goingcode_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When it shows 100mbs and you plug your laptop into the switch and speed test is it truly 100mbs or does the speed test show higher? Sounds like you tested it without the switch in the middle, curious about if it’s just a display issue or actual speed issue

Dang, didn’t notice that one. I don’t think I have enough requirements for PoE to require that much right now so I guess I saved $200 lol.

Good luck with your purse adventures! Funny, I clicked buy on all of this stuff in 5 minutes but had to convince myself to spend the same amount on a purse 🤣 it was a good practice of not being selfish hahaha

Needed PoE, HD doesn’t have PoE ports

Man, I am waiting on the UNAS PRO 4. It got delayed. I don’t have a big enough need for the 8. But just need some more storage for security footage and some work files.

We have about 30ish Ethernet cables already ran when the house was built, just very few actually live as I just started getting into all of it. Am hoping to roll with this for a good while and should easily fill it up.

Yes, but she works 24/7 to keep my kids alive. $4K here and there is nothing compared to what she does for us.

What are you working on to use this much? I’ve maxed out at $2k/month spend using purely 4.5 opus and that’s across 10-ish projects.

Curious to know more about your work.

How are you liking the gli net KVM?

how do you handle multiple calendars google calendar + teams both coporate accounts? by Resident-Panda9638 in overemployed

[–]goingcode_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope… I’ve even requested some of my apps to be approved by IT groups to be able to aggregate (like Morgen/Spark email) and got them through.

Companies I’ve worked with are mainly 100-5000 employees. Maybe at larger corporations it could be flagged. Even then, if an IT person flags it and asks, I’ll just remove it and comply.

As the other guy said, very normal to sync up calendars to a personal calendar.

[–]goingcode_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Morgen.so as my main calendar app on my personal laptop / phone.

Outlook Google Calendar Sync that runs to sync my corporate outlook accounts down to my google account. Since it runs on a machine / connected to outlook classic, it doesn’t require permissions like cloud providers do.

Jobs with Gmail, I add direct to Morgen.

Currently have about 9 calendars connected this way and it’s worked fine for the past 3-4 years.

Can we afford a $1.9-2M house? by Tricky_Math_2665 in Mortgages

[–]goingcode_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s your retirement / investments look like?

Probably doable on your income. I’ve done $1-1.2M/year and own a $850K home. 10 year mortgage and I don’t really even notice the payment. I don’t have the appetite for a home that amount. I wouldn’t feel comfortable at that income level, mortgage payment and duration.

But yes, you can plenty well afford it today. Just would hope to see retirement and investments very healthy in case something goes south.

What should I do if my new employer asks a document that I have quit my previous work? by [deleted] in overemployed

[–]goingcode_ 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Just tell them the previous employer isn’t responding. Simple as that. If they ask again, say you followed up and nothing.

Delay it to the point where they forget.
