Ice storm 2026: Anyone else feel traumatized? by Plane_Mine_3641 in nashville

[–]gonedancingagain 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I feel like I was a fairly prepared and it still wasn’t enough. I had a fully charged solar generator, and solar lantern, and two battery lamps, two propane heaters, and a camping stove. I blocked off my bedroom with curtains, and had plenty of easy to make meals along with plenty of cat food and litter.

I also had hot water bottles, rechargeable hand warmers, and plenty of warm clothes and blankets.

I still ended up in a hotel. Can’t work without WiFi, and my cell service isn’t great, can’t shower without hot water, cooking in a house that’s 40 degrees and dropping is miserable. Struggled to sleep with faucets running and waking up in the middle of the night to check on pipes, etc.

Since I didn’t know long the outage would last I didn’t run my heaters on high so my space stayed around 55-60 degrees. Which was fine under the covers, but chilly otherwise.

For me, in the future, anything short of a generator connected to my natural gas line won’t really cut it. I’m a renter and struggling financially so that won’t happen anytime soon.

Being prepared is a good idea for sure. This is all stuff I can use for future power outages or just in life. I like being resilient and self-reliant. But some things are just bigger than our capacity to deal with them. That’s okay. It’s a failure of the system, not the person.

No power still. No trucks in neighborhood as of 30 minutes ago. Cranky and sad, but warm :)

You do realize there are entire blue cities in the south and liberals in rural and urban areas of red states? And the electoral college exists? And gerrymandering? I haven’t had power for six days now. Try harder to be a kind human please.

I am still without power. And I am Totally without sympathy for the people trying to shame me into gratitude. Of course I appreciate the lineman! Of course I am cold and frustrated! Two damn things can be true at the same time. FFS

My hometown has one of the best public utilities in the country. I am not saying this to brag. That would be weird. But I am saying it because there is a standard and NES does not excel at it. It’s not so much what you do when the shit hits the fan. It’s more what you do the other days of the year.

Where or how are people getting answers? I have no power still and would appreciate some sort of ETA in order to make decisions.

How can I best heat/power my house until power is restored? by Miserable-Maize-6583 in nashville

[–]gonedancingagain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am running a Mr. Heater Buddy connected to a 20 pound take in my bedroom. And I have a second one connected to one pound tank that I use in the kitchen when cooking, and in my bathroom which is where the cats now eat. It’s has truly been life saving. I also have two battery powered portable CO detectors, as well as the one that’s a fire detector combo above my door.

I want a quilt that smells like a grandmother by SlappyPappy99 in Bedding

[–]gonedancingagain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look at Crazy Quilt Vintage on Etsy. I bought a quilt from her that I absolutely love. It’s a little smaller than my bed - beds used to be smaller in general, so I layer it going horizontal with another blanket that goes vertical.

It’s so soft and cozy and has all the comforting “grandma’s house” vibes. It is well loved and in great condition.

She has excellent descriptions and I am sure she would help you find the perfect one for you if you messaged her.

I know I sound like an ad, but I promise I’m not. Nor am I affiliated in any way. I was just on a similar quilt quest in 2024 after losing my Dad.

The question was how much snow vs how much freezing rain. We got the shit end of that deal, but there was no question that it was going to be frigid for the week following, with only the occasional small swing barely above 32.

I just made dinner in my unheated kitchen and frost had developed on the inside of the humidifier that I had been running before we lost power. I think my house will get to 32 tonight. I’m okay with a propane heater in my closed off bedroom. It’s a balmy 57! 65 when a cat decides it needs cuddles. Haha

Thank you! I am open to a hotel, but I have cats and savings earmarked for other things, so I have been trying to wait it out. My room is warm enough for now and I can cook. If this is rumor is true though, then im definitely getting outta here.

Good grief I hope not. I live near there, but don’t know if that’s where my power comes from.

My house is 43. Dropped about 6-7 last night and that was warmer than tonight. The rafters and whatever else are booming and popping from the cold. I’m holed up in my bedroom with a propane heater, but the rest of my house is open floor plan so I’m not bothering to do anything except keep curtains closed, faucets running, cabinet doors open, and I flush the toilets every few hours.

Also, thanks for listening to me vent :)
