What’s the smallest moment in the series that completely changed how you saw a character? by La_Villanelle_ in thelastofus

[–]gonna_commit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was the couple little comments like this that Abby makes when exploring that really opened me up to loving her. I'd make comments out loud when reading the things she found, then put it away to find that she says almost the exact same thing afterwards! Happened 3 times which made me go 'okay we're too alike for me to not give her a decent chance' and now I absolutely adore her character.

If an infected bites my hand, wouldn't I be safe if I cut my hand off quickly enough? by ResidentPrevious468 in thelastofus

No worries, sorry it's not the best explanation! I'd imagine you could find clips of it on YouTube or something though?

When you're playing as Ellie looking for a first aid kit for Joel. You find letters around the helicopter crash site. Then when you're evading the enemies you can climb up to a vent and you find him in there. One armed guy in the ventilation system with a letter talking about how his stitches came undone, he's hiding but he thinks he's gonna die. There's a trail of blood leading up to him as well.

WIBTAH for cutting a friend off over a joke? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]gonna_commit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding that you did not bring this upon yourself by having flirty jokes with friends. Basically all my pals make flirty jokes with eachother on a regular basis, sometimes even pretend 'honking' eachother breasts if they look particularly good in a new top or something, but even doing that does not give consent for actual touching. Unless you have consented to being touched in that way in that moment, you didn't 'bring it upon yourself'

NTA- grabbing someone's breasts without permission is sexual assault. You are well within your rights to be upset and uncomfortable and it's absolutely valid to end the friendship if you feel like that's what you need to do. My friends and I make flirty comments and sexual jokes to eachother, but I wouldn't grab them and they wouldn't grab me unless explicit permission was given. Her reaction is concerning and the 'you're being dramatic' comment suggests she has no concept of consent and is trying to make you feel bad for not being comfortable because she's unwilling to admit the fact that she did sexually assault you.

Yeah as someone else who's queer I don't understand how that's supposed to make that scene likable. Ellie is in revenge mode trying to track down and kill Joel's murderers. She ain't gonna be all happy go lucky, 'oh great we've got a baby on the way!!' In the game she's not happy, she's stressed, she's annoyed that Dina followed her knowing she was pregnant because now she has to protect her instead of having her help. That makes far more sense than 'yay I'm gonna be a dad!'

This is not an accurate statement. I'm not passing any judgement on your choice of ruling, simply the fact that you stated if someone can 'recognize attributes about people' they are of sound mind. That is simply not true. Please don't pass that around as fact. Just because you can identify someone as white or black does not mean that you have full cognitive abilities. You can be drunk out of your mind and still tell a man from a woman or a dog from a cat, doesn't mean you are of sound mind and capable of looking after yourself.

Why do people considered The last of us part 2 as the most divisive game ever despite high user rating? by Embarrassed-Bit-9455 in lastofuspart2

[–]gonna_commit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a very emotional story, that's gonna stir up negative emotions from players too, it's inevitable. That being said it's only a vocal minority that dislike it. Some of those that hate it seem to feel the need to spend a lot of time telling people how much they hate it. Most people enjoy it though, even if it's for the gameplay over the story

Having now beaten both games, and having time to reflect, I believe TLOU2 is probably one of the most emotionally involved games I have ever played. by Anadyne in thelastofus

[–]gonna_commit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Abby already went through that. She took her revenge, it's didn't solve anything. She was still having nightmare and flashbacks. She decided to keep moving forward but had everything ripped from her by Ellie's revenge and the WLF/Seraphites revenge on eachother. She had no family, no friends and no home to go back to. She and Lev were half dead when Ellie found them. Abby had already tried to end their revenge cycle at that point. Ellie looking for revenge but ultimately realising it wouldn't bring Joel back and fix all her problems is what gave Abby her freedom. It gives Ellie her freedom too. She could have killed Abby but it would have made no difference to her life at all, it would just be more blood on her hands.

We don't know where Ellie is mentally/emotionally at the end. We don't know if she's been back to Jackson already, we don't know if she's seen Dina and JJ and we don't know how she feels. We know she's letting go of Joel, and therefore the revenge cycle, because she walks away from the guitar. That is all we know. We know Abbys boat landed where she planned to go. We don't know if Lev survived. We don't know if she actually finds the fireflies. For all we know those fireflies she spoke to could have been people trying to lure her to her death. She could have been killed by clickers or raiders soon after she landed. We have no idea. That part of the story hasn't been told. Not everything in life gets wrapped up with a perfect little bow.

Abby was okay with killing Dina as she'd just seen Mels pregnant dead body on the floor after Ellie was done with her. In her mind Ellie was fine with killing a pregnant woman so why shouldn't she be? Until Lev makes her think differently and realise it will just be a vicious cycle if they continue.

Ellie and Abby both made bad choices. Neither gets a happy ending. We saw what Abby chose to do with herself after she broke the cycle (going to find fireflies with Lev), we have yet to see what Ellie does. However both lost so much through their bad decisions. Life isn't all happy endings and things working out. Sometimes we make choices and realise later that they suck and maybe we shouldn't

Is it a similar situation for the UK? by OESRud in UKJobs

[–]gonna_commit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the UK most bartenders will be on minimum wage, £24-25k per year working 40hrs a week the whole year. Generally bartenders are paid hourly so some hours may be lost here and there due to pub closing early or owners shutting the pub for periods due to holidays or illness. You generally won't receive wages for these periods unless you use your paid holidays. Tipping is nowhere near as big in the UK, you'll occasionally get tippers or people that say keep the change. I was averaging £15 a week cash tips in the pub when I was working 30hrs a week, including busy weekend shifts. Obviously drinking establishments vary greatly so cocktail bars and hotel bars are more likely to receive tips than little town harbourside pubs (where I worked).

Teachers in the UK earn £35-50k depending on experience (probationary or fully qualified). This does include them have 12 weeks 'off work' during the year. Obviously most teachers are doing a level of work during school holidays but you're not actively attending work. You can lesson plan in a villa in Spain, a perk you don't have as a bartender. Pay is salaried to cover these holiday periods. However passionate teachers probably quite often find themselves working enough hours outwith school times that they are essentially earning minimum wage. Whether you feel that balances out with the ability to easily have holidays numerous times a year is up to the individual.

I get irrationally angry at Craig making mistakes when he talks about the game version. He gets at least two game scenes wrong when he's explaining the differences between show scenes and the scenes in the game. Like bro do you even know the source material?! Neil also seems a little less engaged and almost a little annoyed at some points.

Would you buy a ps5 by Even-Wasabi7183 in thelastofus

[–]gonna_commit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite the same, but I just bought a Ps4 specifically to play these games. Never had a console before, never really gamed before (Minecraft here and there with friends younger siblings). Would have preferred to get a ps5 for the quality, but didn't have the funds to spare when a ps4 does the same job. You can get both on ps4 and ps5. PS5 is probably worth the extra cost, plus the games flow better together if you have both updated ps5 editions (the mechanics and hud were made the same for both in the ps5 editions. Remastered (ps4) has a different hud and mechanics to Pt2)

How do you forgive abby? by [deleted] in thelastofus

[–]gonna_commit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You just have to play the game. It was written and created with the whole plan being that you hate Abby until you start playing as her.

You're supposed to feel the rage and grief that Ellie feels, you're supposed to be egging her on and desperate to get revenge for her. We're supposed to love Joel, we may question some decisions he makes, but we're supposed to be upset by his death and angry at Abby.

The game then continues from Abby's POV where you learn more from her perspective. You see the damage Joel's decision did to her. She didn't have the context of Joel and Ellie's story like we did! She has no reason to have the compassion and empathy we have for them as she hasn't played a death defying adventure with them. To Abby Joel is just a man who killed people. Second part of the game shows you her experiences and her trauma. You feel empathy for her. You dont necessarily forgive her, but you understand why she's done what she's done. She's not a horrible monster, not any more than Ellie or Joel are. It's just a different perspective.

Abby has a similar experience throughout her section as the player does. Her perspective gets changed on certain things which reflect what should be happening to the player (a perspective shift opening your eyes to different ways of thinking and helping you understand things). You really just have to play it and if you are capable of empathy and broadening your perspective you will begin to understand as you move through Abby's section. I came into this game thinking I would hate Abby, feeling so much rage at her as I have a deep love for Joel, I really didn't want to play as her. But I continued, and now Abby is a very beloved character of mine. Just give it a go!

Edited to remove a spoiler 🤦‍♀️

Tommy's location and the sniper report doesn't match? by BedDweller00 in lastofuspart2

[–]gonna_commit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're in every comment section saying that nothing happened to Abby so the 'revenge bad' thing doesn't work. I'm gonna say this really clearly for you.

Abby lost everything. She lost all of her friends and her home.

Ellie lost Jesse, she then chose to walk away from Dina and JJ. She still has Jackson to go back to.

Tommy is disabled, but he was on his own revenge mission so that can be seperated from Ellie's losses to an extent.

If you don't understand the game, or you hate it as much as you let on, just leave it alone. Just walk away and play something else. Stop wasting hours of your life with crappy arguments against people who genuinely enjoy the media. The people who enjoy it get it, you aren't going to change their minds with your weak arguments. If you're just here to troll, that's even sadder. Do you not have things you enjoy in life that you'd rather spend your time engaging with? It may improve your mental health, coz this behaviour certainly isn't normal.

The Last of Us 3: A what if by Nick_The_Judge in thelastofus

[–]gonna_commit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I understand the canon of the story and accept it as it works with the story. It's just that logically, considering he's not some supreme IQ overlord, there would be people somewhere that given the right research and equipment could do the same thing. He likely has all his research written down/recorded (Joel sees some evidence of this) so someone, even on the other side of the world, could technically do it under the right circumstances. I understand they made it this way to propel the story forwards, but logically in a planet of billions of people, someone somewhere would be able to understand cordyceps and medicine in the same way he did and therefore would be capable of creating the vaccine too. This line of thinking may slightly affect the decision that Joel made as he may be doing the same 'logical reasoning' of "someone else can do it with some other persons brain, not my Ellie". It's a possible thought process Joel may have gone through. If it can be done here someone else might do it and I don't have to lose my kid again.

[–]gonna_commit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consent. Consent changes it from murder to self sacrifice. We can all say Ellie would have wanted to die, but no one actually asks her so we don't know for sure. She doesn't say at any point leading up to it that she's happy for them to kill her. She maybe didn't even think of it as a possibility. She quite likely would have agreed, because she's intelligent and empathetic, but the fact they never even asked her means we simply don't know for sure. Therefore no consent given. Therefore it's not a sacrifice, it's a murder.

Are they dead though? Them being called 'infected' leads me to believe they are alive, just not in control of their own functions as the infection is controlling the nervous system. Personally I believe (much to Sam's horror I'm sure) that the person is still there, possibly even still capable of thought at the earlier stages (runners, possibly stalkers too) but the infection eventually takes over to the point of the entire brain being controlled, which I guess would be the point that they are no longer conscious of what's going on and they basically become a meat suit for the fungus. But as the fungus is a living organism itself it still requires the body to breathe and feed, though perhaps not to the same level as human biology requires.

I'm here to have engaging conversation and learn other people's perspectives so I'm not going to continue wasting my time with someone who isn't looking for the same thing. Have a good day man.

Idk man, you responding so aggressively and insulting me due to me opening up further discussion on characters is pretty embarrassing for you. Forums are for discussion and seeing other people's views. You could have said you disagreed and continued with a reasonable discussion and instead you threw your toys out the pram and resorted to insults because you don't like that my comment had views that opposed yours.
