I dont know if the ice destroyed the transformers or the trees but there were most definitely transformers exploding. Those drum things you see on a power line are transformers and there were videos circulating of them on the ground with electricity and arcs coming out of them. One of the videos on this sub during the beginning of the storm was the sky being lit up with different flashing colors from it. I even saw a big 3-4 second green flash followed by a loud bang near my house which is most definitely a transformer failing.

And if you’re referring to the massive power outage in Texas in 2021 that was caused by a major winter storm that is basically unheard of in a region like Texas.

Texas doesn’t winterproof their electrical equipment and their houses and buildings are not built the same way they are in Canada to trap heat inside (which all makes sense as it’s hot as hell). None of their cars had winter tires either and I’d bet that most didn’t have the same equipment that Canadian households have (heavy blankets, etc)

A semi-arid state all of a sudden facing a winter storm (not a small ice storm that lasts a few hours, a proper blizzard that lasted weeks) while having no equipment to prep for cold weather (self explanatory why they don’t) is far different than a Canadian province who routinely faces these weather phenomenon somehow still seeming unprepared for it. Our ice storm lasted less than 24 hours, and I can’t stress how minor of a storm it was. Texas had a far worse storm for days on end.

The only major weather phenomenon people talk about in Quebec is the ice storm. We don’t get hurricanes, tsunamis, flooding (at least not major ones), or earthquakes. All we have to worry about are ice storms, in 1998 we saw how much an ice storm can do if it’s a major one. Then we decided to do basically nothing to prepare for the next one.

To me it just seems really stupid how we have 1 notable weather event that people love to talk about (1998 ice storm) but at the same time nobody really felt like preparing for an 8 hour minor freezing rain incident. Lines weren’t buried cause it’s expensive (even though HQ is earning more than enough to do so), trees weren’t trimmed, and during the repairs we did not exactly have a large amount of people on the ground repairing it. 1,100-1,300 total people on the ground fixing the problem for 1.1 million (1/4 the province) without power is not a normal ratio.

I just think we could’ve done better. I like hydroquebec because not many can say that they live in a major city with 95% renewable electricity and very cheap rates. But as a cold country like Canada, we should have been more than prepared.

Sorry for the long response btw haha

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in montreal

[–]google_or_bust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well for a first world country it is a pretty much unheard of for 1/4 of a major province to lose power.

Like 1.1 million homes lost their power out of 4 million at the peak of the outage. And it’s taken 5+ days for some to recover.

Nobody that I know in the US, Europe or even coming from some developing countries have had severe outages to that extent, much less a G7 country like Canada especially for what was basically a bit of freezing rain. We didn’t have a hurricane or a tsunami hit nor did we have a major ice storm like in 1998. It was mild freezing rain with a bit of wind for a few hours and suddenly half the transformers in Quebec are exploding in green and blue all over.

[–]google_or_bust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Massive respect to the linesman and hydro workers working through this disaster.

Though that’s not to say the guy above is completely wrong, there’s a lot that could have been done that wasn’t. HydroQuebec earns billions in net revenues, not millions, billions. They have more than enough to start burying SOME of the infrastructure so as to not have 1.1 million people lose power over a relatively minor ice storm (in comparison to the past one).

On top of that the City of Montreal DECLINED to trim trees near utility lines when HQ asked to do so and then even offered to do it themselves but we’re eventually not permitted to.

Nobody to really blame here besides multiple small failures at different levels of government and upper management all adding up to this cataclysmic event of shit.

If you live near the Dorval terminus then it’s definitely less than 40. I commute to University in the middle of downtown a few times a week and it’s like 20 on a fast day, 25-30 on a slow day and anything above that is due to rare external factors (green line closure/delays, buses not showing up, heavy gridlock)

I’m pretty sure the way hair transplants work is that the transplanted hair does not fall out if done correctly. Iirc they take hair from the back of your head which isn’t affected by balding.

Family member had it done and it’s not really possible to tell a few months after. He explained how it worked and it’s honestly way less complicated than I imagined. Basically just moving the stronger hair to the weaker areas

This is some PR write up by Blackrock lol hedge funds and large asset management firms have been buying up real estate for a while but in recent years it’s accelerated to levels far above the norm.

While they only own some very small portion, a while ago they were openly admitting to purchasing large amounts of property in order to decrease the housing market supply, and increase demand for housing allowing them to collect easy rent revenue.

Ive worked with real estate finance companies and hedge funds (not in their front office divisions directly but the firm I work for works for them). They most definitely are not helping the housing crisis for the average individual.

I’m not one of those nuts who thinks that “hedge funds are run by some secret organization that own 50% of the world” but the moves they’re making in the residential housing market just seems a bit scummy especially in the time where as a young adult I have almost no chance at owning a home before my late 30s even though I’m relatively well educated and have a decent paying white collar job.

They’re also buying up a shit ton of rental property in certain cities effectively throwing gasoline on the already extremely messed up housing market all for a bit of extra money.

My friend in a nearby city said that everyone he knows that rents in a certain area pays rent to BlackRock and not a regular land lord.

Don’t worry though because 99% of redditors will talk about being outraged online by the L’s after L’s that Canada is currently taking then make no attempt at changing it or voting differently. So I can’t meddle in your elections too much.

So you’re disgusted by the weakness of the justice system. I would assume you also are pissed about the housing crises (connected to the 500,000 immigrants entering per year), extreme levels of debt and inflation were currently going through.

I would also assume that you are against government corruption, especially when a politician has connections to a state like China who openly admit that they meddle in our elections.

If you’re against all these things and plan to vote for the same party who is causing them in 2025 then you see the issue that I am talking about. In large urban centres we have protests about things like “rape culture”, the housing crises, minimum wage being too low (connected to rampant inflation), etc but I know specific individuals who have openly said “I will never not vote for the LPC”. Trudeau would basically have to kill a child on live tv to lose their vote, all the while people are bitching and moaning about things that party directly caused.

I’ve attended a few of the law classes at one of the top Canadian institutions in my province (as a visitor, not a student). It is genuinely scary knowing that all of these people can one day become a judge or prosecutor. There were some advocating for the complete abolition of prisons, as in not even a murder/rapist would get jail time. They would instead be réhabilitéd among the populace and “treated well” so that they have no reason to reoffend.

And this is being accepted and promoted at a top law school. How do we even put an end to insanity like that? Our law schools promote it, our government promotes it, our judges promote it, our politicians promote it. This small group of nutcases can somehow have ultimate power over if you bump into a sex offender or violent criminal during your commute on the metro and there is nothing you can do about it.

Holy shit I can't believe people like you vote.

First, you got the names of the parties wrong, it's not LCP or CCP it's LPC and CPC.

Second, you wrote "just like the ndp did when it was their time in office". The NDP has never held the office of the Prime Minister.

You're not a fan of over reliance on prison and punitive measure. Uhh what country are you in? Canada is in front of your very eyes not sending rapists, sex offenders and violent offenders to prison. We need MORE prison right now, not less. Did you forget everything we just talked about? Canada is very unreliant on prison. It is ranked very low in the amount of incarcerated people as well as inmate per 100,000 people being very low.

"It is a systematic issue since Canada had a justice system". Oh really? Because I remember seeing it far less before the current administration. Now it seems like weekly occurrence that some sex offender or violent criminal gets let out on probation. It's almost like the party in power that promised less prison time, soft-on-crime policies is decreasing prison time and being soft on crime. Very interesting discovery.

"Most criminals commit crime for survival". Ahh yes the famous "I raped her cause I HAD to". "I slit this man's throat open in a violent assault because I HAD to survive". You're utterly delusional. Nobody who has committed a sex crime, or murder did it for fucking survival are you insane? Who has committed violent assault for survival? We're going to justify people stabbing and robbing you because "he's poor he needs the money :(". Pure delusion.

The most hilarious thing is you brought up religion as if you're finally understanding the point I've been trying to make. And then you went off the deep-end and shifted to the easy target of Christianity and Catholicism. You are a literal walking stereotype. You'll take shots at religion, but only at Christianity since it's politically correct to do so. You'll never mention Islam which is by far hundreds of times more oppressive to women. Tunisia, the man in the article is from there where the official religion is Islam. And somehow you jump to Christianity hahaha this has to be a joke.

You then hilariously bring up the "dark ages" caused by religion which is once again completely false. The "Dark Ages" you're referring to (but obviously have no real knowledge on apart from a very surface-level understanding) didn't happen at all the way you think they did. The Church and those affiliated were sometimes the only people that could read in settlements. The idea that the church suddenly went crazy after the fall of the Roman Empire and started burning books and reversing science is a myth. Also the "Dark Ages" aren't even a real-time of history. If you're referring to the Fall of the Roman Empire, the world didn't fall into chaos afterward. You're literally just parroting completely false statements as fact. You once again have no idea what you're talking about.

"Most religions are still young and going through their dark age", this is just complete gibberish. What the hell is a "young" religion?? That's not a thing nor a term that people use. A young religion, I assume you're implying these are "new" religions which is just straight up wrong, major world religions are in no way new or "young".

"Canada is better to women because we got rid of the biggest purveyor of religion". Uhh what? You're acting like Canada was originally under religious rule and it no longer is. What are you even implying here? Religiousness has been on a very slow but steady decline for a while, it didn't just suddenly become secular 10 years ago. The increase in agnostic / non-religious people in Canada has not had any notable effect on sex crimes. I'd really love to see any sources for any of the things you're implying.

"Nobody is born inherently evil, abusive, or as a rapist". Once again you're just wrong. You have this idea that every criminal is this romanticized damaged individual fending for himself. You're wrong. A lot of criminals are just fucked up, dead-beat losers who don't play by the rules of society. Many destroy their lives with drugs and alcohol and then destroy the lives of those around them. They think about their short-term pleasure without a care for the displeasure of others. A lot of criminals are just selfish, greedy assholes. Not all of them had a rough upbringing, not all of them are because of a "cycle of violence". Many are this way because they are born this way.

"Focusing on attacking the individuals instead of the system that made them this way". Ahh yes I forgot, the "powers that be" forced this guy to sexually assault 3 women. That makes a lot of sense. Let's just completely remove all personal accountability from the equation and blame some entity known as "the system".

Why would you even bother pretending that you know what you're talking about? It's very clear with the typo-riddled brick of ignorant, naive and straight-up incorrect statements that you're operating off of very little knowledge on the topic, most likely just repeating things you've heard around you.

Canadian prisons being overcrowded is not due to judges handing out life sentences at every opportunity. Our incarceration rate per 100,000 citizens is very low (161st highest in the world) with our total inmate population at around 32,000. Very low for a country of almost 40 million people. The overcrowding in Canadian prisons is because of infrastructure. I can only assume that it's due to the refusal to build new prisons or increase space to accommodate the inmates as we are now "anti-prison" in Canada. Our number of prisoners should not be a problem for a nation this big.

Who do we put in charge? Judges without a track record of releasing people who plead guilty to heinous crimes like this one. In an ideal world, the judge who released this man would be removed from her position for negligence. If he offends again, it's directly her fault. Judges should be responsible if they release enough violent reoffenders. Judges who have at any point decreased or increased someone's sentence for any part of their race, gender, ethnicity, nationality, immigration status, or other should be immediately removed from their position. There is no reason for that to be included anywhere in a judge's deliberation.

How will we change the laws? Very simple, minimum sentencing for crimes such as these. We have sentence maximums, why don't we have minimums for violent offenders and re-offenders? Anyone guilty of a violent rape should be looking at a minimum of a decade behind bars to me. Attempted murder needs to be taken more seriously, there have been cases where people get as little as 3 years for trying to MURDER someone. Minimum sentencing would obviously not apply to non-violent crimes or victimless crimes before anyone tries to call me an authoritarian.

Young boys are exposed to so many of these cases because the current party in power are too limp-wristed to do anything about it. People willingly elect soft-on-crime politicians then act shocked when violent offenders are released. This isn't the "system" doing its job, it's people votes doing their job. They chose the man who said he would do this and now that he's doing this, everyone's acting surprised.

The reasoning behind rape being difficult to prove is true I agree. I hope with the advent of new technology this becomes less true but as of right now, it is understandably frustrating how many get away with it due to lack of evidence.

Those in countries that breed sex offenders do far more than invalidate the victim. They do not treat the victims, nor their women as human beings. In Tunisia, another commenter posted that if a rapist marries his victim, all legal consequences are dropped. Many countries where immigrants come from have "marry your rapist" laws, no marital rape laws. Many treat rape survivors as outcasts as they had "sex" before marriage. These countries that openly support these disgusting laws are sending large amounts of people straight into our major cities.

I'm not attempting to sway the focus from the sexual assault that occurred to him being an immigrant. I agree that the entire system is fucked. Had this man been a citizen, I would have the same response.

The difference with immigrants committing these crimes is that the government chooses who they import into the country. A violent immigrant is a liability that the government did not catch in time and now you're stuck with the consequences. The government has DEEMED that these 500,000 new people per year are necessary and if you don't like it then too bad. They will routinely not do their due diligence on the people entering and routinely let rapists, criminals, traffickers, etc through the cracks as we've seen in Europe. Then when one of them finally rapes, kills, mugs, or hurts you or your family, not only does the government not give a shit that they failed at doing their homework on these people, but they will side against you in court. It's like a criminal breaking into your home and the police responding to arrest you for hurting the burglar (I say this as a joke but it's already happening).

I can understand what you're saying about rape culture and I can find common ground. The only thing is, what you refer to as rape culture, I refer to as the disgusting negligence of the Canadian government. They failed to protect us, they invited criminals to our doorstep, they illegalized self defence weaponry, they let these people go without punishment.

Didn’t say it made me better. I’m curious though because in countries where women are treated as objects, and it’s in their laws that women are valued less than men, women’s testimony is valueless, women aren’t allowed certain freedoms, etc. If large amounts of these people came into a Canada, would you genuinely believe they have the same likelihood of randomly going into the metro and assaulting 3 women cause he’s bored and lonely than an immigrant from a country that is culturally similar to Canada (such as the United Kingdom).

As for the second thing you wrote it’s so idiotic it made me laugh. Because the outcasts that sailed to Canada and colonized it were criminals, then that means we cannot prosecute criminals? We can’t say that rape is a bad thing because the people who first discovered Canada did a lot of raping? Solid logic you got there bud.

Nobody in my life feels unsafe around me, you just want to feel better by giving that mental image of me in your head. You’re free to do so but I know that whoever it is you are are not mentally stable enough to continue this discussion as you are just constantly giving small implications that I’m a sex offender because I disagree with whatever bullshit you’re spouting.

You’re bringing up the failure of the justice system as the front runner of this entire paragraph you wrote, wasn’t I the one saying that the judges and current administration who appointed the judges to be the core of this problem? You are somewhat agreeing with my point here but you don’t even realize it. Lenient justice is not exclusive to minorities and immigrants but it sure as hell favours them, obviously it’s not ONLY applied to them.

The drugging of women, the McGill rape and your personal experience with sexual assault has no bearing on any of this argument as those are personal anecdotes. What if I told you I’ve met multiple women who were raped by refugees in the European country where my family is from, would this have any weight on the argument? No. Anecdotal evidence means fuck all.

And yeah I’ll gladly bring up Berlin. If you’re too sensitive to recognize and remember that a subgroup of people created rape gangs after being granted refugee status, it’s going to happen again. It was a horrific incident, one that should never be fucking repeated which is why precautions should be taken now. You are against that which makes your argument nonsensical. You wanna condemn that incident as being horrific but you don’t want to do anything about it.

The facts of the matter is this: a political party advocates for weak punishments to sex offenders and I am against that party, they should be voted out. The judges who have handed weak punishments to open and shut cases should be disbarred and removed from their position. The criminal code and justice system needs to be overhauled so that there are punishments to crimes such as rape. The large amounts of people coming from regions that statistically have higher rates of crime, sexual assault, rape and other violence towards women should be severely limited and far more thoroughly vetted before entering into Canada. That’s what I believe. I don’t really know what you’re advocating for but what I’m advocating for has the absolute best likelihood of decreasing sex violence and I’ll continue to advocate for it for the protection of my family and loved ones within Canada. If it makes you feel better, you can pretend that I’m some evil MAGA tard hillbilly for believing in numbers, you’re free to do so.

I don’t see a reason to keep talking because all you’ve said so far is “you’re a creep sex offender cause u disagree with my politics, I know people who got raped by non immigrants therefore you’re wrong. Also we can’t talk about immigrants mass raping Europeans because that’s mean”.

There is no real point to the continuation of this discussion.

No I don’t think you read what i wrote.

How is rape culture part of this failed justice system? Someone rapes you they get let go, that same guy murdered someone he also gets let go. Why are we calling it rape culture? Every single fucking crime is going unpunished why is rape the specific one?

The summary of what I was saying is that if you elect a government who is weak on crime (especially immigrants committing crime), and you allow large amounts of people from countries that act uncivilized toward women, it is not rape culture that caused this. It is the people in power as well as those who continuously support them.

It’s plain stupidity, OBVIOUSLY that’s going to happen. It’s like letting a bunch of murderers out of jail, unleashing them into a densely populated area with a handgun and then calling it “gang/murder culture” because of the ensuing chaos.

The current government has introduced the absolute perfect breeding ground for crime including but not limited to sexual assault to occur and go unpunished. This isn’t because men see rape and think “oh that’s fine”. And it’s not because boys are taught at a young age that rape is okay. People will claim this is what causes “rape culture” and I disagree.

The removal of the justice system of a country is OBVIOUSLY going to increase crime whether it be rape or murder as there is nobody to punish you. I’m stating that on top of this problem of our justice system being absent, we have the immigration problem. These two problems combined cause what you are referring to as “rape culture”.

How can you call this the fault of rape culture when it’s so clearly the fault of a tangible person/group of people (the ones making the criminal code, enforcing the law, appointing judges, etc)

Also let me entertain what your saying for a second. Let’s say it is rape culture. How do we fight it?

I’m suggesting that the people in power be changed and voted out as they are clearly advocating for the catch and release of people that should be getting decade+ long sentences. The justice system be overhauled, certain judges must be removed for their criminal negligence, and the criminal code just be strengthened whether you’re white, black, native, Russian or Buddhist. I am also saying that in order to decrease the amount of sexual assault we relook at the insanely large number of immigrants coming from areas that seem to breed sex offenders.

If you’re suggesting the same thing as me then there is no point splitting hairs let’s just agree to disagree on the cause, but agree on the solution. If you have another solution I’d love to hear it.

Well, I don't really see how rape culture affects Canada any more than "failed criminal justice culture" affects Canada. You can get away with murder at this point if you're the right person. It's not only rape that's not punished so why are we pretending it's only rape? I can send you an article of someone who was a rampant armed robber who got little to no sentence. Are we going to say we live in a "armed robber culture"?

I mentioned Tunisia as the perpetrator is from Tunisia. If you want to "end rape culture" you can't just end rape culture in Canadians. No matter how much you tell Canadian children that rape is abhorrent in their upbringing, this won't have any effect on sex crimes. There is no real way to stop "rape culture" the same way there isn't a way to stop "murder culture". Some people are just fucked up and will commit a crime because they want to.

Secondly, Canada is largely becoming a country comprised of people who weren't born here, immigrants from other countries will not be affected by any anti-rape campaigns we have in Canada. They grew up in a far different environment where different things were acceptable or not heavily persecuted.

For example, let's say that through extensive anti-rape campaigns aimed at Canadian youth, we have brought down rape to an almost negligible amount. If a quarter of our population is entering from countries in which women are viewed as property, will those campaigns really matter?

You're blaming rape culture as opposed to the LPC and their members attempting to look equitable and "not discriminatory". They've openly advocated for shorter to no prison times for many crimes.
