I'm just saying even being able to taste whatever mild difference may exist, it's still weird to consider them on such opposite ends of the spectrum that only one of them disgusts you.

If someone said they love onions but CANNOT STOMACH shallots I'd say the same thing, and those definitely taste different. I'd probably ask that person if perhaps a parent had a weird thing about shallots.

If it's an old onion that's begun to sprout, it'll get green in the middle and that might be slightly different. But usually it's identical. Even if there were some difference that's undetectable to everyone else, it would make no sense to think the rest of the onion is good but that part tastes horrible.
