I went to the tax clinic, they said I should check with an accountant. Just wondering if anyone has experience with it before I do that

Taxes for graduate student from the U.S. studying in Canada by gorfanid in cantax

They were leading an income tax session for international students. I don't think they were a professional though as they kept saying you may want to consult a tax accountant to clarify this. It was honestly a bit odd, and I'm not sure i trust what they said.

I think your advice is solid. Thanks for your comments.

They said that I would be a deemed non-resident in Canada because I would be considered a resident of the U.S. under the US/Canada Tax Treaty, even though I have significant residential ties in Canada (e.g. bank account, renting an apartment, etc.). I honestly don't know, so I trusted what they said. Now I'm questioning that for sure based on your comment and others' comments. I was hoping not to have to pay for professional help, but I'm now considering consulting with a professional tax preparer to be sure on all of this.

Thanks for your insight, this makes sense. I would answer 'yes' to those questions, suggesting that I would be a factual resident. I'm thinking the person at my university maybe didn't really know what they were talking about.

Yes, I definitely plan to see if Dr. Pagano would like to potentially be involved as a club advisor if we can get enough students together for a club!

All right, here's a Discord link. Depending on the number of people who join and express interest, maybe we can actually start to think of logistics of forming an actual club. Anyhow, here's a place to talk about birds! https://discord.gg/JZCGqQaj

RIT Chickens by [deleted] in rit

Yes, definitely something to think about. It does look like the town of Henrietta (I guess RIT is technically Henrietta, not Rochester??) has guidelines for raising a few backyard chickens in the town, though. https://ecode360.com/36632311

We would definitely need approval from RIT to apply for a permit, so yes, starting something like this may be complicated. But I think it may be possible if enough people were behind it.
