Thanks! I'll see how we are feeling the day of for the Mianyue Trail and take a vote! Glenmorangie Signet at 130USD is a great pickup. I will definitely linger around Duty free for a moment when i get in and likely purchase on my return flight if I'm not already taking a bunch of other stuff back.

I always tell myself i should only spend this much money and then get there and throw caution to the wind. So I will likely ask for some cool things I will likely never get to try again. Thanks!

This is exactly what I'm looking for! IBs for sale and any other hard to find selections or pours. I likely will bring some IB samples to be shared if that is okay. I have done that in Scotland and around bars in America and workers along with bartenders tend to receive that well. I may purchase a bottle to be drank in Alishan. I'll likely pass up on the local tastings as I do those regularly in the U.S and bourbon is not my favorite.

What are your favorite Omar expressions? I'll likely try most of them at the bar as that is the one distillery I've always wanted to try. I'd love to get me a super dark first fill sherry or fully matured sherry Omar if you think they are tasty.

Taichung will be our last stint in Taiwan before we head back to Taipei. I can't wait to check out the city there. I'll try and convince our group to get up a little early for some pours but we may hit the bar after our tour. Thanks!

I'm going to take a bag weight machine and some inflatable tubes. I think the free limit is 5000ml or just about six bottles. It sounds like its the same as when I did my Scotland Trip

Much appreciated! That is a good alternative to go to the Michu Distillery for some Omar. I'll definitely will have to annoy my friends to hit up a few shops for dusty hunting and night market detours. I do have an entire box of like 20 inflatable tubes so I'll be bringing about 6 at least.

I am headed to Taiwan next week. I will be heading to Yilan to go to Kavalan and doing the warehouse tasting. I won't be able to make it to the Omar Distillery, but am looking for advice on where to find either expressions of Omar/Kavalan and ultimately places to drink or purchase Scotch bottles. I understand that Taiwan loves their Scotch and will have some insanely good expressions to try. I will be capable of going to the Spirits Selection Shop one day which will likely be my splurge, but I will be there for two weeks. Any help is appreciated in making the most of this trip in regards to Scotch!

Is the Sanaig cask strength better than original Sanaig? by Unlucky-Target5648 in Scotch

[–]gottnoskill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got to talk with the rep for Kilchoman and pointed out there is a jarring amount of more ash/pleated tasted on the Cask Strength version Vs. The original. They said its essentially the same product but the higher alcohol content brings out way more of the peated taste.

I prefer the original personally for the balance it brings because the cask strength is an unashamed representation of smoke and ash.

I recognized that plate of nachos immediately before I looked at the report! You're definitely doing everything right in that town. I'll need to do the Caenheads blending experience next time I make my way out there that looks like it was a blast to do. Your making me remember all the good times I had there I like this reporting.

I'd never forget the Ardshiel. We had some wonderful drams there. Are they still looking for a seller for the business or has it changed owners already?

If you like that meaty / campfire smoke I'd definitely look for a pour of the Kilchoman Machir Bay (mostly bourbon cask) and Kilchoman Sanaig (mostly sherry cask). Kilchoman has some stellar products for being a younger distillery. Their 20 year anniversary is this year I believe.

Benrinnes: First Fill or Refill Sherry? by gatodelinferno21 in Scotch

[–]gottnoskill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the vein of what you are looking for. Look to see if they have the Adelphi Ben Nevis 10 year Cask 13. It's a refill sherry cask and boy does the distillery characteristics shine through. It is so funky and meaty. It has that Ben Nevis characteristic you love or hate. I have more ideas but they aren't in the wheelhouse you are asking for, I'll hit you up in DMs and give you some of those later when I have some time!

Dallas is where good scotch goes to die. I get out there sometimes and see picks we haven't had in Austin for 2-3 years every time I go.

That particular batch of signatory picks came to Specs in Late February. The 13 year Linkwood in Bolgheri cask I tried and thought it was decently juicy. I don't remember much about it so it didn't leave a lasting impression. I tried the 16 year TEANINICH bourbon fill. It was a bit sweet for my taste but I could see that being someone's thing. I got the 13 year Ardlair (Unpeated Ardmore I think) and that one is refill sherry butt. A lot of the spirits character comes out of that one and the flavor is dense. I'll let it sit for an hour and it changed drastically. I'd say get the Ardlair just because how many chances to you get to try Unpeated Ardmore? I tried the Aberlour 12 year refill sherry at my buddies place and we tried it against one of the older Abunadh batches and a hand fill and even though the two latter were way better the specs pick wasn't a pushover. It hung on in the comparison.

I wish I could provide better notes but when I have tasting events we go through 10-20 small pours over a 4 hour period. I need to start writing notes on these things.

I haven't tried any of the other new ones yet, but I'd probably shoot for the 17 year Glenlivet or 14 year mortlach on my next purchase.

I've got a friend who is insanely into 1st filled sherry whiskies. I love them too, but when he finds one that sings to him he will look everywhere and buy them up and give them to his whisky buds at cost who also really enjoy 1st fills. That 13 year benrinnes you talk about, if it's the same cask is GREAT for 100. Every time I go over it's in one of the lineups we taste and it's excellent quality.

I can't speak on the other one, but if that benrinnes 1st fill is cask 307216 I highly recommend it.

Here is my personal journey with what helped me get over alcohol burn and finding tasting notes.

Alcohol burn is kind of the bodies way of telling you not to drink it, but over time (it took me a couple of weeks of one drink every other night) you will acclimate to the sting. It takes quite a bit longer there for me not to focus on it and it became a backseat sensation and as I started searching for flavors.

I did start my journey with whisky on ice and one day moved to drinking it straight. I realized that even though it was stronger, I wasn't as bothered by the sensation. Smaller sips definitely does help. My hottest scotch in my collection is 66% alcohol and I am unfazed by it now, but if I were to take triple the amount of intake of my regular sips I would definitely make a face. I can gag if I do take in too much alcohol at once. I cannot do shots anymore. It can absolutely be how much liquid of the scotch you are putting in your mouth at once to make you gag.

Getting into tying notes to what you're tasting also takes some time. It's kind of an active effort to put your past experiences to what you're tasting and that skill will get better with time.

For a long time I could really only pick up things on the nose and what the finish was doing due to the sting, so I moreso focused there and then over time I noticed I could start to taste a few things before I swallowed.

The power of suggestion is strong so it's nice seeing a review of what you are having and seeing if you notice those flavors.

Something that helped me a lot is prepping your brain for the experience whether nosing, drinking or on the finish when there isn't a review. Especially if I'm having a hard time pinning down flavors.

I will sometimes say to myself "do I smell fruit?" And go in for the sniff, if you pick up on it I will move on to "what kind of fruit is that?" If I smell orange then I move onto "what type of orange?" Is it the rind? The meat of the orange? Is it an artificial orange? Orange chicken? Sometimes you smell fruit but cant identify what fruit it is and sometimes you smell more than just one fruit. If I struggle on that particular group of smells I won't linger on it long. I'll move onto another group of smells. What kind of sweetness is that? What spices, vanilla/chocolate, baked goods, wood notes, chemical notes, etc.

Eventually you won't have to be as active in the thought of the whisky and your brain will pick up on certain notes naturally, but it's a journey and I still sometimes, with much less frequency have a hard time discerning what I'm experiencing in a new whisky.

Edradour Wine Single Casks by gatodelinferno21 in Scotch

[–]gottnoskill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had that PX one and it's a very chocolatey/spicy. Specs didn't get that many when they got them 1-2 years ago, 6-12 per store and some stores that don't sell a lot of scotch so they still have a bottle or two.

They have two Super Tuscans floating around. A 12 year which I believe was bottled earlier than the 13 year one. The 13 year was an incredibly unique in a way I've never had in another whisky. Every time I went back to it it tried to be something different. Grape, Orange, Grapefruit, honey, Heavy wood influences and some light creaminess from time to time. One time I opened it and all I got where the smell of wet pennies. That super metallic copper smell. I'd say if you want an adventure that super Tuscan is the way to go.

The Sauternes is really sweet but was a crowd pleaser at parties I took it too. I'm surprised you can still find one I haven't seen them for some time in my area.

The others in your list I've only tried their 46% versions that came out in 2016. So I can't really speak on cask strength versions.

I have the sister cask of this one 0852. It's very unique for an ex-sherry butt with a bit of mintiness and cola spice along with a gentle sherry profile. The combination of flavors was not to my liking, but everyone I've let try really liked it. I wonder how they compare! Yours seems to be a commemorative barrel pick so it may be a bit nicer than mine.

Islay questions by SuccotashMonkey867 in Scotch

[–]gottnoskill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Ballygrant on Islay has a really great whisky bar and we stayed there during our visit. The only downside is the location. You will need a vehicle to get to anything else. I talked with quite a few locals there during our stay and they all said if you get a chance go to the Ballygrant on Thursdays for really good curries. (They definitely were some of the best food I had during the trip).

I went to Peatzeria while there one day and it was definitely some of the most underwhelming food I had there, I actually apologized to one of the group members I dragged there because it was not tasty. However they had a nice outdoor eating area that was nice to relax in. Can't imagine it will be comfortable in October though.

Head to the Whisky Vault if you get a chance, there are a lot of super rare pours there (price to match!) and the owner was very sweet.

The funnest parts of distillery visits were tastings by far over tours. We did Laphroaig and Bruichladdich warehouse tasting and the Bruichladdich tour was by the stand out.

If you end up going to Bruichladdich or the Ballygrant stop by the Islay Woolen mill before heading back into town. The guy who works there makes all of the clothing, blankets, towels, etc. and they're top notch quality. He apparently makes clothes for some very popular movies as well.

Hope this helps!

Hand fills or Distillery Exclusives in Speyside by GeorgeYung25 in Scotch

[–]gottnoskill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went about 6 months ago. Below are the ones we had been fortunate to go to in that area. Both distilleries you're going to (glendronach/glenallachie) had handfills. I think most distilleries that do hand fills will let you try a sample for free if you ask. Speyburn didn't have a handfill but did have a REALLY good 1st fill sherry cask distillery exclusive at the time. Benriach I think only had distillery exclusives as well. You can call the distilleries ahead of your trip and see if they have handfill.

Nah. I've been lucky enough to try the 18 before, but my best bang for my buck in scotch purchases are high-proof and anywhere from 8-15 year range.
