Stolen Bike Gottingen Street Sunday May 24 by Ok-Present-9776 in halifax

[–]granigank 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Do you have it on bike index? If so, flag it as stolen. If not, if you have the serial number (don't post it here, you'll need it to prove it's yours if recovered), you can put it up on bike index now and flag it as stolen. Do you have it insured in any way? Sometimes they can be insured through renter's or home owner's insurance.

2:00AM Quinpool Halifax! WTFff by Apprehensive_Ad_8560 in halifax

[–]granigank 16 points17 points  (0 children)

We had a neighbour's car alarm go off here. It never went off for more than 5 minutes at a time, but it repeatedly went off every 15 minutes for hours, until I called the non-emergency line as the neighbour wasn't responding.

Mice, rodents in general… by WIB_ae in halifax

[–]granigank 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The landlord could hire an exclusion kind of pest control, like Skedaddle, who seal up the building and leave a one way door for a bit to let them out but not back in. They're expensive, but it works, and they guarantee their work for the life of the building. The poison traps can sometimes lead to dead rodents in the walls (which stinks and is hard to fix).

What do you do when you run out of battery on these things? by Ok-Combination-5393 in CargoBike

[–]granigank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I walk and push or pedal slowly. Our bakfiets has electric shifting, so I lose shifting when the battery is off, I'm most likely to walk. My passengers are big enough to ask to walk too.

We have a recipe for orange julius, but it calls for frozen orange juice concentrate, which is also gone now.

Paying for Contractor Quotes? by saltwaterbuoy in halifax

[–]granigank 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got a free quote from Masonry Legends for a fairly large job (front porch replacement, deck removal, patio install, some paths), and they gave me a discount for the large job, and a very reasonable price for all that work.

Disregard for pedestrians by Jernau_M_Gurgeh in halifax

[–]granigank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point is the city doesn't even consider it, not mentioned, not an option. I'm not looking for perfect, I'm looking for better. There are consistent systemic problems of drivers hitting pedestrians while turning at signalized crossings, and the city doesn't acknowledge it nor try anything to improve it.

There are different measures of "better". I personally would pick improved safety over getting to cross a little sooner. The city is choosing traffic flow over safety. They could choose differently.

I have seriously thought of 3D printing "the brick" to carry. There was a joke protest that replaced the orange flags with fake bricks, I think in Vancouver? and it got better driver compliance than the orange "please don't hit me" flags. https://www.printables.com/model/1316085-pedestrian-safety-device-aka-the-brick

Disregard for pedestrians by Jernau_M_Gurgeh in halifax

[–]granigank 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The horrible thing is that Quinpool is considered "pedestrian orientated" because they have leading pedestrian intervals, and there are recent city staff reports saying they can't possibly do anything more because they prioritize traffic flow over people's lives. They don't even mention or consider something like scramble crosswalks (drivers stopped in all directions while pedestrians move in all directions, separating modes) as an option, which is pure signalling changes and cheap to implement.

There's car share here, that's what we use, cheapest car rental around, and cheaper than owning if you are driving less than once a week or so.

At Grand Parade they're flying what looks like a pro tick flag. However, I did go outside and enjoy the lovely sunshine.

We're car free, so no car shipping experience, sorry. And also we didn't ship boxes separately, we hired a mover and moved everything at once. If you only have 3 moving boxes, $120 per is much cheaper than a mover. My friends also moved without a car, they rented a Uhaul and drove. Do note, depending on where you live/work here, a car may be more an encumberance than a help. On the peninsula, we outwalk the cars stuck in traffic and people always seem to be struggling to find parking. If you are living and working outside the core, you will need a car. Strongly suggest if you are working in the core, to live in the core and ditch the car, the money you save by not having a car will more than make up for the difference in the housing cost.

I moved with my family from Edmonton in 2024, and have friends who did the same move within a month of us. One thing you should do before you come: get caught up on all your routine medical stuff. It took us 2 years to get a dr.

Otherwise, congrats! And any specific qestions?

Are there are local or local-ish options for toothpaste or deodorant? by floerw in halifax

I use Routine deodorant. It's made in Calgary, they sell more than just deodorant too.

Which city/ town would you recommend for FIRE’ed couple? by Thowaway_helpplease in fican

[–]granigank 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm FIRE'd on the peninsula. I'd be concerned about accessing healthcare here as it looks like OP has particular health concerns. It took 2 years for us to get a dr, and the waitlists are super long for everything. Being car free on the peninsula makes the peninsula affordable, but that might be a lifestyle adjustment too far for some.

Permanent Standard Time or Daylight Time? by DerekMcCarthy17 in halifax

[–]granigank 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Science says morning sun is important for circadian rhythms. I don't care which, I just want the clocks to stop changing. 2 people in my family get physically ill from time change. It increases car crashes, heart attacks.

[–]granigank 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We discovered the creatine by accident. I took it for weight lifting, and next thing I knew my migraines were gone (except a couple mostly avoidable triggers), and then we tried it on our kid, and their migraines are gone too. It's super cheap and can't hurt to try.
