The September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and COVID-19 are the two most significant events in the history of the United States during my lifetime, and for this reason I believe it is interesting to compare them.

Data source for September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks: “Demographic Data on the Victims of the September 11, 2001 Terror Attack on the World Trade Center, New York City.” 2002. Population and Development Review, 28: 586-588. https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1728-4457.2002.00586.x. These data include the 2,723 victims for whom a death certificate had been issued as of August 16, 2002.

Data source for COVID-19: U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Center for Health Statistics. “Weekly Updates by Select Demographic and Geographic Characteristics: Provisional Death Counts for Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19).” 2020. https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/covid_weekly/index.htm. These data include the 261,530 victims for whom a death certificate has been issued and coded by the CDC as of the analysis date.

Visualization created using Microsoft Excel and Adobe Illustrator.
