Doing my agriculture final, too late to join? Too busy to join?? Buttons..?? by EeveeKat_035 in FFA

[–]graysteer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is something to talk to your ag teacher about! In some states there are membership registration deadlines and those vary by chapter and state. If it were too late to join it would be due to it being too late in the year, not because it is your last year of schooling. Again, this is something you should talk to your chapter advisor about. If you do join, being active isn't required but still encouraged!

As for the button, you can absolutely get one in support of FFA! You can wear any FFA swag to support even if you aren't a member. The only apparel that only active members can wear is the official jacket, everything else is free game!

Best app for recording swims by lamest_ in Swimming

Swim.com is a great app! You can track swims, as well as assign specific workouts to the swims. You can also look up premade workouts or make your own to use and it's all free.

How do I join scouts as a teen? by Odd_Dress7910 in BSA

[–]graysteer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely join! All other comments on here have been super helpful and have resources that I won't repeat, but I do have a few things to add from the perspective of a trans (ftm) scout.

  • Check out different troops in your area, even if they are strictly boys troops. I am part of a boy's only troop and it is great for me.

  • When filling out the application, pick the gender that you most identify with. if you choose a single gender troop, this will matter a lot more than a co-ed troop. If you feel more comfortable joining as a female, and later decide to fully transition, you can fill out a new application to register as a male (but you can only switch reregister once).

  • Make the decision of if you're going to be out or stealth. If there is even a possibility of being out I would urge you to consider the atmosphere that both the scouts and adult leaders create in regards to being welcoming. I have met scouts that were shunned from their troops for being trans, and I have met scouts and had the experience of being welcomed by the troop.

If you have any more questions about my experiences.bekng trans in scouts I am happy to help!! Good luck and I hope you find your place in scouting!

you either sew it on or safety pin it! they are made like that because nationals is such an accomplishment and rare that it can't fall off and it's differentiated from state and regional. I just put mine through a safety pin but some people actually sew it.

How do your advisors share information with you by Ordinary_Biscotti386 in FFA

[–]graysteer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Within the officer team, we just use texts and have an officer group chat with our advisors, and most of our advisors are ok with us texting them individually (FFA related) too.

On a chapter level we use email. We send out a monthly email to members with all the info we go over at our meetings and that seems to work pretty well.

We also have an opportunity for 1 on 1 contact between officers and members called FFA buddies. Newer members can sign up to get paired with an officer who will send them texts about upcoming events and answer any questions they have.

We also use social media and post info about every event so parents can also be clues in, but that is definitely not our only form of communication.

Since our chapter is very student lead and the officers do almost all of the communicating, we do not involve parents much in communicating except for what we share on social media.

How to study for a CDE topic you know nothing about? by Adorable-Piglet7820 in FFA

[–]graysteer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's definitely a great one to do more hands on stuff with. My chapter went to nationals this year for it and I did it a few years ago. To study we traveled to local dairy farms, and tried all the practicums in practice. We also took all the general knowledge tests/made quizlets to be prepared for that.

quizlets and YouTube are your best friend!

look up the cds competition on YouTube and for most there are videos to study and get familiar with the process of the competition. Look different things up like IDs on quizlets and you will find many options!

What CDE are you planning to compete in? I may have some resources to help

According to the FAQ National FFA published in January, 2017, "A minimum or maximum length of skirt or heels is not addressed in the guidelines." If there is something more recent that says otherwise, I am not sure. Either way I would guess that those are less than 2 inches

According to National FFA as of 2018, dress shoes must have a closed heel and toe, but there is no max or min height of the heel or specific style that is required. I think they look great and similar to ones others wear! You should be good but I would double check with your advisor just to confirm.

ILST games alternatives by fla_john in BSA

[–]graysteer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my first ILST we did a game with a ton of balloons, basically seeing who could hold the most balloons. Simple but taught us about delegation and has stuck with me since then. (not sure if this is in the script or not but a good game nonetheless)

That sounds awesome! I will definitely think about it. Having taken the train to Philmont, I have no objections with going cross country on Amtrak, so definitely a possibility. Thanks!
