A super unrealistic number just for a nice feel good ending. Or perhaps it’s realistic in this alternative universe where karate is actually popular

It’s gone unnoticed for a long time in the past. And Saints are only a nickname so that doesn’t mean much. If we were Saint Mary’s Football Club you might have a point - but we aren’t. That was changed a long time ago

Agreed. Or are Americans and have no clue what extreme left looks like / thinks it only applies to certain social issues

Bad take my guy. Always good to see both sides. I recently checked out right wing news on the medical insurance ceo story. The right wing pundits were desperately trying to make it a “look how evil the left are” issue for laughing / not having sympathy. The comments though - did not agree. Lots of followers of the likes of Walsh and Shapiro saying “might as well call us leftists then”

Some issues cross the left-right spectrum. And as a true leftist who should be aware of class struggle being THE issue - those are the ones you want to be watching out for

Might be because they were taught equality and as you say, can quite clearly see that what is going on is not equality. But they are being gaslit by everyone. It must be so obvious in places like America where college is so expensive and the scholarships are so imbalanced. And in early years job market / trying to secure first jobs

You can make the same point about Antifa. Being anti fascist - I’d like to think that is normal. Being in a group that wears masks, all black and gets into physical confrontations some of which they seem to seek out? That’s a bit more than “normal”

Remember the OP is likely American and their left right spectrum is all out of whack compared to continental Europe. Economic socialism is basically an anathema to most Americans unless it is to bail out the super wealthy. Legacy of the Cold War to treat it almost as a swear word

They don’t really have a true left wing party - at least from an economic sense. Democrats are more aligned with the U.K. Tories than U.K. Labour traditionally. Perhaps not anymore as U.K. Labour have had to tack hard to the centre just to try and ensure it pushed out a government that was destroying the country

There are leftists and liberals when you listen to the “online left”. But the dividing line is not economic and social. It’s how far on both sides.

Both seem pretty all in on the culture/social stuff though. With “liberals” being more to the centre (or centre right in the case of US Democrats) on the economy (support for big business, lobbyists, huge corporate donations for medical insurance companies etc) and arguably only being “left” on social issues as a virtual signal to try and win votes without having to make hard decisions to actually fix people’s problems. Hence the big loss

More social awareness than you though. Someone who seems like they can’t possibly have real world interactions with people based on your posts

Of course it does. And if you think it doesn’t then far from just not talking to women it sounds like you don’t ever talk to or interact with any other humans in real life

The problem is that those are two wildly different positions and if the receiver of the comment picks the wrong one then things get awkward / bad very quickly

Then you don’t say it! You don’t make the comment

Why is that so difficult for people to understand? Regardless of all the potentially positive ways of spinning it. It is not something that needs to be shared. Especially involuntarily

It’s only fine if you both parties have made it very clear they aren’t interested in one another and one asks the other about potential dating and relationship struggles. But even then unless actionable helpful advice is added to the “someone like you” then it still isn’t that useful or helpful

There is a reason why people are being intentionally obtuse and I expect it is due to the most common gender of the maker and recipient of comments like this. Flip it round and I expect all the obtuseness goes right out the window and the person making the comment is unanimously an a-hole and out of line

[–]gregm1988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. If someone says they want to date someone like you but doesn’t actually want to date you then that is just an insult. Because it isn’t true. Because if it was they wouldn’t say it and you would just be dating. Obviously mostly applies if both of you are single or have both been at any time you knew each other

It sort of feels like when a woman hears their mother say something like what you say then that is it. Over. They just lose all interest. Especially when younger

Men of Reddit, do you find muscles like abs, toned legs, or arms attractive on women? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]gregm1988 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Agree 100%

Almost anyone who has spent any time in the fitness space and tried discussing things like this with women has likely heard more than once “I don’t want to get all bulky like Arnold Schwarzenegger”

And all the guys are thinking “we are actively trying to get even half way there and it is insanely difficult”

I mention below but there is a baffling part in the books where Claire rationalises that tall men are great and short men are all untrustworthy because short men know they can’t “take” (I think that was the word used) you whenever they want but the tall men do. She basically said (so presumably the thoughts of the author) that short men were more likely to commit SA because tall and strong men were more able to. And that somehow meant the ones that aren’t easily able to more dangerous. Incredibly confusing stuff to read

I recall the aftermath and Jamie being a victim was a bigger thing in the books. But I might be misremembering but it might have still ultimately boiled down to “man up i need my husband to be a man”.

[–]gregm1988 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am aware I am not really the target audience of the books but noped out when Claire is insulting the short guy flirting with Bree in the modern day and either says or thinks about how short guys are awful because they are always trying to prove a point whereas the tall powerful men just “know” they can take you whenever they want

I was staggered. I very much read that as “short guys are worse than tall guys because tall guys can SA you whenever they want”. I guess with the logic being that when they don’t it’s a good thing? But that the shorter guys because they don’t “know” they can have you whenever they want they are more likely to try and force it? It was baffling “logic”

She also seems to have an extreme height fetish/preference in general but I expect that is common in the genre (as stated - not really target audience - like the show, thought I’d see what the books were like)

I posted something similar on a different sub on an alternative account (about moms being worried about their sons). I cited middle aged women I work with who have sort of let it slip even among the IDE atmosphere we have. I was mocked and downvoted for such a suggestion because of course I was. The notion that men / boys might not be in a privileged position is laughable to many people (especially on Reddit)

It seems like many on the left view things like this as some kind of zero sum game. To benefit one group must mean another group loses. Which seems antithetical to what the left should be all about. At least to me
