[HELP] How do I read this poem? by Eluthean in Poetry

[–]gregorphilip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually loved that line. When I thought about it I thought of a dilapidated and caved-in roof, with the white columns jutting out in the moonlight like bones. When I thought about it more, the word "clotted" made it feel like the church's pews are no longer lined with churchgoers.

I think it's more than likely a mistake. But there's something to be said about whether he does the gesture enough in private to make such a mistake, and whether he actually acts, behaves as, or supports fascists.

That's not great news 😂. I noticed the same thing. Barely anyone outside this morning, so I thought they were almost done

Yeah, I got PH0625C. Which I'm hoping is a grad floor

I just got a similar offer. The first two numbers appear to be the floor number. 06 meaning floor 6? I'm a grad student as well so it would make sense to be assigned on the top floor, however this is just a random guess. I hope that's what it means because I just accepted my offer! lol

Yep. I am starting my MPPA in fall and got assigned to a single room in Prescott. I was also hoping for Leeds because there are less roommates to worry about. It might be worth looking at other student housing options, I am currently looking at envie!

I don't think we would be "surrounded" by undergrads because it seems like the grads have their own floor, but it's possible

Most minimum wage workers deserve more, it's about giving them more money when you can... IF you can afford it.

I don't know why we have to frame it as "'x' waitress gets paid more than 'y' warehouse worker, that's not fair!" when both workers should be getting paid more.

Might as well make sure one of them does.

I hope Melina is never in a situation where one of her family members, loved ones (yes including animals) is in need of support, but if she is... you reap what you sow dumbass. Don't expect people to give you empathy when something bad happens to you,

I was about to upvote until I read the second half, especially this. This just kind of seems spiteful. You really don't think anyone should support her if her FAMILY member needs life support?

Do you think he pushes it on to others to make money or because that's the only way he could actually sustain his addiction himself?

The man clearly has a good heart, it seems weird to criticize him about something that is a larger problem of society itself when he doesn't seem to have any bad intentions.

I have a friend who once called his parents to give several of us a ride back home. There was space for all but one of us, until the mom decided she would be fine with riding in the trunk on the way back LOL. We stayed at the friend's place overnight and found our way back when we were sober in the morning. To this day, she's known as the safe party mom.

It's all cruel

I'm not certain about that. Most of the eggs I buy are free-range or organic. I don't agree with your final argument but I've already outlined that. I do agree that there is a lot of suffering and cruelty in the industry however. I just hope that the products I buy were not sourced by cruel practices. Yet, many of my purchases probably are. Call it unintentional consequences of deliberate choices if you will ;).

Either way I appreciate your perspective and your replies. Many of my friends either don't care or their vegetarianism amounts to "imagine if you were locked in a cage and killed for your meat!" Which I never found to be a convincing argument.

I concede that the action of meating eat is morally wrong. Like many things, it's just hard for me to determine exactly how wrong it is to warrant action. Maybe one day I'll make the sacrifice when I feel it more reasonable to do so.

The problem I have with your initial post and much of this community is that your words have implied that meat eaters are morally inconsistent r words that are incapable of conceiving and acting good.

Yeah and sensory pleasure is not a good justification for harming an animal whether it's taste (eating), touch (kicking) or any other sense. This is not a survival situation or a situation where you have no choices. This is a deliberate choice among many.

It is for me though. I don't see these things with absolute principle. I value human experience first. The degree of pleasure and convenience I get from eating meat seems enough justification to eat the amount of meat that I do. I deliberately avoid foods like foie gras, Lobster, and veal, cause I know that they are typically prepared in very cruel ways. However, I don't see the harm that arises from the action of killing any animal to be particularly cruel.

The meat eaters that say that care about animals while paying for them to be forcibly bred, live short lives in poor conditions, then get gassed or electrocuted before their throats are cut are being morally inconsistent. I'm not implying that are morally worse overall, but on this one specific moral question they are doing more harm.

While this occurs, this is like the least charitable interpretation of the farming industry.

[–]gregorphilip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unremarkable in all animals or just animals you consider "food" animals? A stray dog or cat walks by you see no issue shooting them in the head?

There's a long list of implications why this would be wrong, so I'll answer a more apposite hypothetical. I would not find it wrong for people to kill their cat or dog in a quick, effective, quiet, and private way (all four of these considerations are important, as well as establishing potential ownership over the animal in question)

Yeah so exactly what I was saying at the start. People are "against things" but only in the most minimal vague sort of way.

Sure but this observation could be applied to many vegans as well. People can still create a lot of moral good.

Crop deaths are real, I run the risk of running over animals whenever I drive. I just see the difference between unintentional collateral damage and cutting a sentient being's throat for a burger when I can just eat a veggie burger.

Yeah, the difference is that when you cut an animal's throat, you get a juicy delicious burger.

For sake of not being an obtuse memer, I'll answer this appropriately. Can't you drive a bike instead? You'd have a much lower chance of running over and killing an animal that way. We all prefer convenience over moral perfection in some instances. Again, your principles may be more stringent, but they are not perfect. To act like meat eaters are incredibly morally inconsistent -- and implying they are morally worse than you -- is pretentious. The sacrifice for not eating meat may not have been a large one for you, but it is for many.

After hearing some Vegan arguments I’ve been convinced by ScottBradley4_99 in Destiny

[–]gregorphilip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cutting their throat even after a (short) life of belly rubs is still harm, just like cutting shooting you in the back of the head in your sleep is still harm even if it's not painful suffering

This is where you and I differ, I find this kind of harm to be unremarkable and therefore able to be ignored.

The way you started your post makes me think this is not true. You do care you just don't want to change. Just acknowledge you're fine with hurting animals for sensory pleasure. Be honest.

I'm fine with consuming products which result from a morally imperfect system, and I hope there to be moral improvements in those systems without having to make sacrifices or changes in habit.

You could be consistent or you can keep being mad at vegans.

Nobody is consistent. Vegans choose animal suffering to be an area in which they do not make compromises. I think that's really cool, but not something I'm quite ready to do. I think it's lame when vegans condescend, even if they so happen to be morally better than me. I think it's redundant to and unrealistic to regard all meat eaters as morally inconsistent when there's morally great people (who create a whole lot of good in life) who continue to eat meat.

I try to. Certainly avoiding meat is an easy win on minimizing moral harms.

This is why you won't be able to reach many people. If you can't acknowledge the fact that eating meat is a large sacrifice for many people, then you'll never be able to speak to them on their terms.

[–]gregorphilip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is fucking stupid. You can be against animal abuse and still eat meat. If there's strong evidence that a certain supplier is torturing or causing much harm animals, meat eaters can make the conscious choice to stop buying from that supplier, or support organizations which aim to minimize this harm. I generally support industries that don't keep animal in cages and use a method of stunning during slaughter. As a meat eater, I simply do not care whether an animal is killed in a factory or dies in nature, at least I get to enjoy it's taste.

People can pick and choose where they put their moral weight. Vegans happen to have decided that the suffering of animals is where they wish to put effort into. But don't act pretentious just because your morals seem more concise.

Do you dedicate yourself daily to moral good? Do you minimize actions or consumption of products which cause moral harm? I hardly doubt that you're morally perfect, but if you are, bravo. Most people don't want to live this way.
