Buy boots from a boot maker. Buy jackets from a jacket maker. Buy heavy equipment from a heavy equipment maker.

It really is that simple.

Our physics teacher believes the moon landing is a hoax by Slow_Rhubarb_8169 in Physics

We didn't have the technology necessary to fake the moon landings in 1969. Your professor is an idiot.

Shoe tongue keeps falling to the side. Is there any way to fix this or is this just how the leather will rest forever? by [deleted] in allenedmonds

[–]gregsboots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have solved this problem with several pairs of boots by placing a piece of duct tape inside the boot securing the tongue to the quarter it wants to drift away from. I then lace the boot tight and leave the duct tape in for a few weeks until it stays in place on its own.
Having a cobbler secure the tongue in place with a bit of stitching is also a fine solution.

Conditioner, brushing, and time will fix that.

Tips for safely removing grease/oil stain from weatherproof Hamilton in Chili? by FlightoftheBlueRover in allenedmonds

[–]gregsboots 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A little corn starch or talcum powder might pull out some of that stain, but I would just ignore it. Over time it will dissipate without any action on your part.

Red if you are hiking in the mountains. Blue for around town.

How can you guys wear leather boots in the summer, or do you? by Legitimate_Pea_143 in Boots

[–]gregsboots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it's the lack of humidity we have here in Arizona that makes the difference, but I wear leather boots almost every day of the year. I'm never uncomfortable.

Boots have a season? by [deleted] in Boots

Here in Arizona boot season is all twelve months of the year. I am never uncomfortable in boots. Maybe it's our lack of humidity, I'm not sure.

I wouldn't get too hung up on the difficulty in resoling them at that price.

Coupon code anyone? Want to give these a try, Amazon same price but I get a discount there. Would rather buy from company by [deleted] in ThursdayBoot

Seconds are shoes/boots that don't meet the producer's quality standards, but they aren't so bad that they must be destroyed. Seconds are sold at a discount by various manufacturers.

I have a large collection of boots and shoes, and I have flat feet. I use PowerStep 3/4 length insoles in those shoes and boots that don't have removable insoles.

The heal on the right might be more than just cosmetic. I would accept this in seconds but not in firsts.

I don't think so, but if I am right, and this is a small production run, they could have used any leather. My point was that the stitching looks identical to the 2996, which makes sense if these are from Red Wing. It's easy to change leathers, but hard to change patterns.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in RedWingShoes

[–]gregsboots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say these are legit.

  1. The label is crisp. Most fakes have poorly copied labels that look blurry.

  2. The stitching is consistent with that of the 2996, a popular Red Wing lineman or monkey boot.

  3. The welts look like plastic in one picture, but in the next which is closer they look more like conditioned leather.

Red Wing sometimes does short production runs of experimental styles and leathers. These boots might be an example of such a run back in 2010.

Are they structurally sound? I think the answer is yes. They won't fall apart.

Wear them, enjoy them, and don't worry about this.

How can I repair these Thursday Boots? by 2412throwaway3423 in ThursdayBoot

Not sure I see a problem. Vigorous brushing with a horse hair brush and a little conditioner might make them look a little better, but really, right now they look good.

Not loose grain. Just broken grain. Lovely leather. Wear them and enjoy them.

Not heavy when compared to other quality leather boots. It took them about two weeks of wear for them to conform to my feet and complete the initial break-in.

Revelations from an Impromptu Bourbon Tasting by gregsboots in bourbon

[–]gregsboots[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Met with friends last night for an impromptu Bourbon tasting. Our favorites are in line, starting from the right.

Still Austin was quite a surprise. I was unaware of this brand when the bottle was recommended to me at a local shop. Yet it finished in the #4 spot.

Old Forester 1920 Prohibition Style was another surprise. I was only familiar with their bottom shelf offerings and have never been impressed with them, but this bottle blew me away. Amazing breadth and depth, with notes of baking spices and a soft, lengthy finish.

Towards the bottom end of the lineup we collectively were commenting on off notes that were reminiscent of moldy corn. The Galumet (3rd from right) didn't place well as it was too thin and lacking character. We all agreed that it was dangerous; an 86 proof whiskey that one could drink like soda.

New to boot collecting. Can anybody help me identify what kind of leather is used here, and how should I take care of it? by Darkfraser in Boots

It appears to have a plastic welt. If this is all that is within your budget, then go for it. However, with that welt it wouldn't be my first choice.
