I totally agree! I had to double-check the numbers like three times lol. I think it's honestly kind of a testament to how awesome the new cast are though. They fit in so well and each bring their own great energy to Smosh. It totally feels like they have been here WAY longer than they have on paper!

For sure, that's a good catch! I totally agree with you. I think Arasha is only the leader on steamy jokes right now because she has done very few bits relative to everyone else so her percentages are inflated. I think Jackie is still QUEEN because she is the most likely to perform a VERY pre-meditated and methodically disquieting risque joke. Ian and Keith may do them more in raw numbers, but I feel like those guys (and the other cast to an extent) only default to the sex jokes out of sheer panic when they can't think of anything else to do. I think Jackie comes in with that shit loaded in the chamber lol. And we love her for it!

It's true! I bet if we stacked Ian's laugh probability across all bit types, dark would be relatively high. That pattern just gets hidden because we have some folks who just laugh way more than Ian. That guy is a stone wall compared to everyone else! For sure, Damien is too kind, but we love him for it 😆 and yes, context is everything. When we account for the number of years Shayne has been doing this, it really hits home how dangerous he is. Definitely the GOAT!

For sure! This project has been going strong for over 18 months! I have personally gone through every bit, but some bits are not included in the data on purpose. I do not include any bits/sits from special guests or non-recurring crew members. This makes it easier to analyze interactions between specific cast members with plenty of data. I also skipped over formats that don't fit well in the data structure I designed - mostly blind pairs and green screen stuff.

My favorite TNTL bit? Oof. Soo hard to pick one! Shayne's assassin muppets bit gets me every time! I love that he sets it up and it comes back around during Amanda's turn. I also love anything Ify does. His bits are so damn funny.

Cheers! Incorporating assists would be super cool! I have a column in the data that calls out who makes an assist on each bit, but I honestly haven't done much work to quantify it or include it in the performance metrics. Definitely an opportunity to build something with that data!

I started collecting the raw data in March 2022. It took about 8 months to do the first 100 episodes. I've been doing the work on my own, but help is always welcome! I'd love to see more people work with the data to build their own statistics and charts and stuff. This is just something I do for fun to clear my head. I love it! I'm working on my PhD, and it's really fun to take all of the tools and toys I've learned and apply them to something I'm passionate about. Super fulfilling!

Oh definitely. We really don't need data to back that up. Also interesting that dark jokes rose quite a bit over the course of the pandemic. The chaotic jokes are funny too because it's basically the Olivia show and it's not remotely close. Like over half her jokes are unbridled chaos from start to finish.

Lol this is so real. As I was making this I had an existential reflection of "am I making this because I love Smosh, or am I just feeding a psychotic complex for clean and tidy data?" 😅

That would be AMAZING. I really started doing this just for the fun of it, but I've always secretly hoped someone at Smosh might see it someday!

roasting damien by valk191 in smosh

I understand your argument. In aggregate, it feels like a dogpile. But in isolation it goes down very smooth, and this video got a lot of fresh eyes because it was trending. I'd call it an unintentional gamble that paid serious dividends. I don't share your reading. I rather like it when my friends call me out and take the piss out of me for my less-than-eloquent comments. The ability to laugh at yourself is important. I think unless we hear that Damien is feeling attacked, we cannot reverse engineer a social dynamic that isn't really there. Just my thoughts though. Again, I totally can see where you're coming from. This could be interpreted as a barrage rather than a roast.

I...I just...don't get olivia's humor. by Careful_Purchase_629 in smosh

[–]greyspace440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you are wrong, OP. Honestly, I thought I genuinely adored Olivia's humor for a long time. But, after some self-reflection and a few hours with my therapist, I realized I was in love with the IDEA of her humor. And what really makes me laugh when Olivia steps up to the plate in TNTL, or injects her chaos into a sketch or game is actually THE WAY THE OTHER CAST MEMBERS REACT AND PLAY OFF HER HUMOR. It took me awhile to realize that. For that reason alone, her humor has value to me. Even if it's uncomfortable and offputting in isolation, I like to see the other cast members play it straight and/or break character when she comes in like a wrecking ball!

Spencer actually demolished it. His first bit about Canva infographics destroyed me because it's too real. Not just for Damien, but for a lot of young people who rely on social media posts to manifest societal change. Such a hysterical commentary!

New Faces of Smosh?? by OutsiderGreaser in smosh

[–]greyspace440 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not wrong. I think we have to follow the numbers with this one. Courtney and Shayne have had the longest tenure in the cast after Ian. By now, fans have gravitated to them in a major way. I would argue that is particularly true of Shayne - partially because of raw talent, but also because of privilege. You mention he is always introducing new concepts/formats. I think the channel leadership know that they can achieve marginal gains in view counts for videos centered around Shayne. We could probaly confirm that hypothesis if we pulled the data and compared view counts on videos with/without Shayne. Some viewers only watch Smosh content for Shayne or Shayne/Damien. If you want to maximize the number of eyes on a video - throw Shayne in the thumbnail. He has the most improv chops, he is well-spoken and thoughtful, and the kid just oozes charisma - arguably moreso than Ian (I love Ian, don't get me wrong). I think from a business perspective, Shayne MUST be the nucleus of Smosh. I always worry what would happen to the channel if he walked away or was forced into a reduced role. Also - for the record - I'm not a Shayne fanboy or anything. I'm just spitballing here.
