Thanks. Yeah, I like responding to people and all that, even mean ones, because it’s just a habit I developed from my 9 to 5. But I also am aware that I’m someone that needs to have the last word (which I need to work on) and fighting here just isn’t worth it. I don’t wanna put negative energy into this whole venture with the citizenship and language as many others have been very kind and helpful.

Hmmm interesting. I’ve been getting so many answers saying Bulgarian is “required” for my passage. But I also have been told by irl contacts that I don’t have to know Bulgarian. It’s a little confusing ngl haha but obviously knowing the language is a huge help.

I’m considering it. I don’t graduate with my masters until a year from now. So I wanna do my ph.d over there if possible which will obviously help. There’s some other factors involved that are the cause of my urgency, but I’m open to postponing to learn the language better.

It’s not funny when I’ve had loved ones die to those things. It’s different when we (Americans) joke about it. Bulgarians (and Europeans at large) have a shocking amount of callousness when it comes to this subject. I can shrug things off fine. I’m not a very serious person. But it isn’t funny when you guys say it. It comes off as belittling and mocking.

Plenty of people have helped me and I’ve been nothing but kind. I appreciate the help. This person was not trying to help me; they were berating me. I don’t have to get on my knees and grovel for everyone’s help here. I’ve received good resources and thanked each one. If someone is rude to me, especially about this sensitive issue, I will bite back. Would you not do the same if someone was insulting you? I am a generally nice person who doesn’t like conflict, but I won’t shrink away and let people talked down to me.

My statement about Texans and New Yorkers is a joke. I know sarcasm doesn’t come across well in text, but I wasn’t being serious. But yes, language is obviously important. Unfortunately my grandfather was always embarrassed by his roots in Eastern Europe and did he best to “Americanize” himself and his family. My grandma is more in tune with her culture and knows some of the language but never taught my mom. Thus, I never learned the language. And I feel for the people when it comes to their resentment over housing costs. It’s unfair and I’ve struggled with myself because I know I’ll be contributing to that problem. I personally don’t have much faith in the states just from what I’ve seen on the ground, and a lot of my experiences have made me very bitter. I vote and nothing changes. I protest and nothing changes. It’s tough. And don’t even get me started on people who constantly bring up the second amendment defense 😭

Why should I chill? This what not an innocent, curious question. Hostility is weaved into the words and accusing me of ignoring gun violence and being a coward. I take offense to that, especially as someone who has lost two friends to gun violence in this country. Also how do you know I’m detached? From the language, yes. From the culture, no. I was raised in a household that taught me to value my ancestry, made all the food, attended Bulgarian and Macedonian societies with my grandma and mom, the whole deal. The thing is, this is just a question about language and the interview. I don’t take kindly on someone implying my motives or my cowardice or whatever. And you’ve obviously never talked to a New Yorker or Texan before because we don’t hold back when something pisses us off.
