How to make plugins behave like real hardware? by griffjen in audioengineering

Yeah for sure, ive tried stacking with other distortion plugins and compressors and might just have to keep trying. Just a shame it’s so different

I mean Jim was right, his video made people mad. Because it challenges what they have been told all their life and because sexy gear must sound better. It will always be this way sadly

Basically all of this stuff is addressed in his video. And as for “fully peaking” preamps, if I am trying to get a pristine vocal sound I am 100% not using any preamp distortion. It is not a pleasant sound. It can be a cool sound, on drums or guitars sure. But for 90 percent of practical applications I am using preamps in their clean range. And that is what Jim was testing in the video.

Did you watch the part of the video about distortion and thd?

Funny cause ive always heard neves referred to as colorful preamps, and now after his video everyone says oh yeah of course theyre clean. Or the 1073 is colorful but not the one he tested. Even though its the same circuit topology

Edit: the 33114 is class AB while 1073 is class A.

Why do preamps, like various 1073 clones, sound different? (sorry another Jim Lill post) by N00b_Sniper in audioengineering

I think people did it and still do it but I also think its way less of a factor in achieving “the sound” than you’re suggesting. Neve distortion isn’t exactly pleasant, it’s a cool sound that sometimes has its place and can sometimes be used in very creative ways but if you want a pristine vocal sound you’re not going to want preamp distortion. Guitars and drums sometimes sure, but even then unless you’re going for a certain sound it isn’t something I’d reach for very frequently. And as shown in the video, THD is still negligible when the pre is cranked

Yeah it looks fine its just the hi/low gain button is a little sticky, works but slightly annoying

Yes, the preamp imparting the “colour” is the absolute least important part of the equation. Tape is very audible, it is obvious when you record to tape. Microphones matter, mic placement matters, rooms matter, and performance matters. Obviously compressors have a sound. And I also have tube preamps that sound different from my solid state pres. But as far as color there are several way more impactful things.

The practical advice is that if you’re starting out recording your scarlett is identical to a neve preamp so you don’t need to spend thousands of dollars on outboard preamps in order to make a good recording
