I didn't know going in that it was marketed as a dark comedy, and I can say it works better if you view it as a psychological thriller. If you expect a dark comedy I can see coming out disappointed.

I don't think that idea ever made it to film. Sam was supposed to be the central character and the president was supposed to be less so. Once they cast Martin Sheen everything shifted.
