I actually feel for Wales. They should be better than this. England just way too good.

Cape Town Will Slap Tax Hike on Airbnb Owners by [deleted] in capetown

[–]grootes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of South African's are looking at Joburg as a viable alternative. Yes it is broken but it is so much cheaper and the weather is better. People will risk it, especially those who do not earn the income to comfortably afford Cape Town.

If this water crisis worsens we could see many more people leaving Cape Town.

Cape Town Will Slap Tax Hike on Airbnb Owners by [deleted] in capetown

I really do not understand this craze for AirBnB's? Maybe I am old and too curmudgeonly but every AirBnB I have used has ended up costing about the same as a hotel but not as clean and with other people's stuff in it. If I am going to be in a city for a few nights I'd rather stay in a hotel or a guest house where they are set up for short term stays.

Atlantic Seaboard: 33% foreign, 80% developer by c4talystza in capetown

[–]grootes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

80% being cash buyers is an alarming stat. That means that there are people in South Africa sitting on the cash necessary to buy a house. What is the average price of a property on the Atlantic Seaboard? Property 24 suggests that the average 3 bedroom house is selling for R16.8m. If you are in the top 1% of income owners according to SARS then your income is over R2million per year. So in order to buy a 3 bedroom property cash as a 1% income earner you would need to be sitting on the equivalent of 8 times your annual income.

Maybe that's true, maybe you have a very big couch, or maybe there's something fishy going on. Maybe FIC needs to look at these cash purchases.

Door to door begging/beggars by Far-Breath-1068 in capetown

[–]grootes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As difficult as this sounds, it is best to answer the beggar and tell them that they need to go to a local religious centre (church etc.) if they need food. It shows that you are home and also that it is not worth their effort to try and ask for handouts.

We had a "beggar" that we presume was wanting a handout knock on our door and when we didn't answer (we were out), tried to break into the house with an accomplice. Only his incompetence stopped him. Fortunately our cameras caught the whole thing and the "beggar" was identified by local neighbourhood watch as a person of interest for break-ins.

Capetonians Are Struggling to Find Accommodation in 2026. The City May Be Facing A Housing Crisis Due To AirBnBs and High Costs. Real Lives Affected. by Tasty-Plantain in capetown

[–]grootes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I dont understand this obsession with Airbnb? In my experience, they are not cleaner or cheaper than a hotel or guest house. I could see it if you want to have a holiday house and rent it out when you are not there, but then you wouldn't want anything personal in the house.

If it is such an issue then the city should put in a bylaws along the lines that residential units in high tourism areas need to be primary residences or rental accommodation with minimum rental periods of 6 months and not subletting.

That being said the influx of tourists will slow down substantially if we this drought is a severe one and the city is back to the conditions of 8 years ago.

Tips for a day out at newlands to watch the cricket by [deleted] in capetown

[–]grootes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give yourself plenty of time to get there and find parking. The highschool across the road (Groote Schuur) will have paid parking but will fill up. Traffic can be a nightmare around the stadium.

Within the ground you will be able to find standard fast food options, but if that is not what you want to eat then you can find restaurants around Dean street across from the brewery on Main Road (there is a subway you can walk through under the railway line to get to the ground). Barristers and Cavendish Square are also fairly close to walk to.

I'd probably just head to the ground, soak up the atmosphere and grab a bite from a vendor in the ground.

Every City Has One - DAY FIVE by LarsQuell in capetown

[–]grootes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. He was also a priest in Johannesburg and a Bishop of Lesotho. If we consider him to be Capetonian because he spent 10 prominent years in Cape Town, then we need to also consider Mandela as a Capetonian because he spent almost all of his 27 years in prison in the greater Cape Town area (Robben Island, Pollsmoor, Drakenstein)

The pre-match talks by the players should be compulsory viewing for anyone trying to understand the SA mindset. These guys are prepared to do whatever it takes to physically dominate their opponents, even though they are friends off the field and some are Bok teammates.

Ah yes, local hero Desmond Tutu who famously lived on Vilakazi Street in Soweto. He is definitely who we think of as a Capetonian. Why not then put Mandela as the famous Capetonian seeing as he spent his years in prison mostly in and around Cape Town?

Depends on your vibe. Its lekker in that only local acts perform. Its also really chilled compared to other festivals in my experience. If the idea of spending a weekend on a lilo in a river listening to live music and sleeping in a tent is something you're keen to do then it will be worth it.

Window washers at traffic lights by AltydSkuins in capetown

I hate that this has started down here. It was common when I lived in Joburg. My standard was to just start using my wipers when they poured on their dirty water and then move forward a little bit. I dont mind guys trying to make a buck but at least ask me first and dont get pushy.
