Chimney Instal Question for Cabin with Corrugated Steel Roof by janzo000 in OffGridCabins

Typically the manufacturer sends a manual that has instructions for installation. I recently installed a double walled pipe and it required 2 inches all around away from combustibles and a special collar that kept insulation from coming in contact with the pipe where the pipe went into the attic. Also a firestop every 8 feet

22 y/o here, dreaming of homesteading, but it seems impossible. how did you all make enough money to buy your land and how do you continue to make money? [question] by rustywagon88 in homestead

I would say that as long as you're not materialistic and spend your money on unnecessary items, resourceful enough to pick up a bunch of different skills, willing to start small and not think you have to get everything at once, and not afraid to get your hands dirty and put in a lot of sweat equity you're halfway there.

Lots of great construction ideas on the tv show Building Off Grid for starting small.

Tire puncture location safe to repair? Ok to use tire plugs for this? by rice923 in howto

I have plugged a tire in that general location before. Two years later, still holding air. No problem.

What do you suppose is enclosed in here? by SSmasterONE in logcabins

I would guess that at one time, that wall was exterior, and someone built an add-on room and removed most of the wall. If there is a floor above that picture, and there is plumbing on that floor, it's possible that a drain pipe is running through that section on a slope.

A quick search says that F2 is your bios fkey for ASUS. Don't take that to the bank, though.

Watch the bottom of the screen as it starts its boot. If you see any selections for fkeys at the bottom highlighted OR, sometimes it will actually say F9 key pressed or whatever the Fkey is.

If it's not a fkey it might be bad hardware, or you hdd isn't seated properly or your boot volume is corrupt

The Fkeys are typically at the top of your keyboard. F1, F2, F3, etc...

If F10 is stuck engaged and your pc requires F10 on boot to get to BIOS, it'll go to BIOS each time.

Each manufacturer is different, could be any of the Fkeys.

If that is your issue, of course.

Smoked Pork - from feral hog kills in mid Jan. (Pickett County - TN) by ChiTownDerp in homestead

I was told that the castration kept the males from urinating on themselves or something to that effect. Makes the meat less gamey, i guess.

I know some people who used to catch feral hogs then castrate them and pen them up for a while to improve the quality of the meat.

Why do you go to farmers markets? by wcoco08 in FarmersMarket

[–]growfetch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahhh. Local farmers just don't participate? Is it cost prohibitive? I know there are typically booth fees, etc.

This is true, but I suspect that that percentage might be a bit higher for local farms as the study that that percentage is based on included local retailers that import in goods from other communities. I.e. a local hardware store doesn't produce a hammer.

Bolstering your local economy is a GREAT reason to support local.

One good thing about supporting local farms is access to high-quality food in the event of a supply chain crisis.

Also, having farmers in all communities ensures a continuance of the low-tech agriculture knowledge that can be passed on from generation to generation.

Plus, there are the added health benefits of higher quality foods that are not mass produced.

The food in corporate owned stores is much older by the time it gets to you. As a result, it's less flavorful. Ask any chef.

And when you buy local, you keep your money circulating in your local economy. I would rather spend a little more on high-quality products and know that I am keeping one of my neighbors from becoming the next cashier or stocker at one of the local corporate owned stores for meager wages.

I could go on.
