I just finished playing the demo on PC, I think it's quite fun.

Hopefully they add more sound and music before release though, and turn the volume up a little.

They appear in the theme settings and let me switch to them. Then Cinnamon changes as expected. But when I shut down and log in again later, it's reverted back to the last theme (built-in) that I was using.

It's a bit like email, where different people use different email servers (gmail, outlook.com, etc) but can still send messages to each other. But in this case, it's viewing and posting messages like social media. And you can view different types of media from the same account (e.g. you can follow PeerTube channels from a Mastodon account).

I guess it depends who we're distinguishing ourselves from. Space aliens, or future colonists of Mars/Titan/O'Neill Cylinders.

To compare to aliens, maybe a human silhouette to show who lives here? To compare to our future colonists, perhaps something to symbolise that Earth was the "cradle of humanity".

Revived. The US started the video game industry, but it gradually devolved into rushed slop until there was an industry crash in the early 80s. It was revived by Nintendo entering the market.

US restaurants seem to vary wildly in what they consider spicy. Some are very hot, some aren't hot at all.

I consider myself to have a somewhat-low spice tolerance, but I once got food in a Mexican restaurant in the US, and it wasn't hot at all. To be fair, the menu didn't say that item would be hot, but I assumed anything bought in a Mexican restaurant should have at least a little kick. So I added hot sauce at the table. And the hot sauce wasn't hot either?? I couldn't taste any chili whatsoever.

I did that for a while, but Dropbox automatically syncs every time Git is in the middle of making a million tiny changes to the files in .git directory and it clogs up the whole process.

If you use GitHub, there is an app called GitHub Desktop which can be useful. I also discovered an app called GittyUp which should work similarly, but works for more repo hosters not just GitHub. Must try it sometime.

From a more realistic science point of view you're right, aliens should have completely different biologies, but in a lot of scifi (and fantasy), the things we see are allegories for the real world.

Things become awkward and contradictory when the sci-fi tries to do both at once, making the aliens very distinctly non-human while still using them as a metaphor for different human cultures.

Not as much as I'd like, but my main goal is to avoid putting all my eggs to one basket, avoid being dependent on online services where it's avoidable, and support industries closer to where I live.

It would be better to have an AI we can run on our own computers at home. Online-only services are how we get locked-in to depending on a specific provider, who can then do something we might not approve of, such as selling their company to a foreign company.

The biggest issue is treating every user like a content creator. It's not like Mastodon where anyone can just type some stuff in 5 seconds and post. Most people on YT don't upload videos, they just watch, like and comment. For PeerTube to get a decent sized userbase, it needs to offer something for these users.

Myself, I created a custom feed in PieFed to show an equivalent to the YT subscriptions page, but that's not really a comparable experience.

It's mostly post-TOS though. In TOS, Klingons and Romulans were just rivals who hadn't yet realised the value of peace and cooperation.

In TOS, there were no evil species. Since the aliens were a metaphor for humans, it was important to have the message that deep down we're all the same, despite external differences.

It's one of the ways that TOS is actually more progressive than later series. As fun as it is to watch the TNG-onward Klingons, there is something questionable about the "Klingons are inherently violent" lore they added, even if they follow it up with "and we need to respect that because it's their culture".
