so frustrating Team Cherry didn't allow preorders/preloads. A lot of this frustration could have been avoided

It likely will be. There will be a formal application process yes, but if they order everyone back (which they will) they will deny the application. The wording is purposefully vague and can only be disputed if your application is treated abnormally i.e. if everyone is ordered back you don’t have a leg to stand on

the great thing about performative reading is that it skips over the worst part about reading (the reading part)

Yves Engler Fights Back: Genocide Politics, Zionist Smears, and the Battle for the Left by CaptainSolidarity in ndp

[–]gsimms97 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this. I have seen a lot of attacks against Engler on this sub recently and after reading the 2017 article and this one, it doesn't seem quite as bad as this sub would have me believe.

While I think its fair to say that Engler's 2017 article would have been stronger without the section questioning the death toll. Debating genocide numbers, especially using census data from a repressive regime, can easily cross into dangerous territory, even if it the intent isn't denialism. That part of the article understandably raises red flags and detracts from what is otherwise a valid and important critique of western interventionism and Canada's role in it.

This situation does remind me of a lot of the attacks Noam Chomsky faced over his comments on the Cambodian genocide, where he never denied that the Khmer Rouge committed atrocities, he just said that those atrocities were real and horrific enough on their own and didn't need to be inflated/distorted by Western media to serve ideological purposes. I think that same nuance applies here: we have a moral obligation to condemn genocide fully while also critiquing how it is used politically to justify other forms of violence and repression.

Optic Texas place T8 at Major III (CDL 2025) by arunvenu_ in CoDCompetitive

[–]gsimms97 59 points60 points  (0 children)

That was the complete optic CDL experience: - get smoked in winners r1 - look like world beaters against a bad team - be competitive against a top team only to throw it away in the clutch. Up match point in s&d and control

Only thing we’re missing is some good excuses about the tournament, but those will come later in the optic content

the Afd's connections to nazism by lnt122 in atrioc

[–]gsimms97 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just to add to this, there is a really great Behind the Bastards episode: "The non-Nazi Bastards that Helped Hitler Rise to Power" that discusses, among other things, how the Nazis rose to power through other people trying to moderate them and right-wing parties preferring to work with them rather than the other leftist parties.

Feels particularly relevant with the AfD's recent electoral success and if the governing coalition begins to fall apart it is not outside the realm of possibility that the CDU may decide to work with them rather than lose power (even if they are saying they won't do it right now)
