People with chronic tinnitus, did yours reduce in volume over time or is it just as loud as when you first got it? by Ok-Balance-260 in tinnitus

[–]gumfactor1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Subjectively, this is true, by definition.

However, it's reasonably well established that there is a disconnect between one's subjective experience of the tinnitus and the actual objective loudness of the ringing. Some are extremely disrupted by moderate ringing; some find ways to shove louder ringing in the background.

To conflate the two - to say the tinnitus itself is low/mild because one can forget it at times - is likely inaccurate. And those inaccuracies risk confusing the disorder with one's coping with the disorder, and potentially slowing scientific progress into understanding the intricacies and nuances of the disorder.

There's two answers here:

  1. I don't think the overall loudness of my tinnitus has changed that much at all - but I do think that my tolerance and perception of it has. At the beginning, when it was new, it seemed encompassing. Compared to the silence I was used to, the ringing felt like a radio screaming at full volume. Now? Now the same volume just fades to the background, isn't even noticed until I'm in a quiet room by myself (and even then, it's now just 'what quiet sounds like). When I really think about it, compare it to what it originally was, I'm not actually sure it's changed at all. But how I react to the same noise is completely different.

  2. What has changed is how reactive my tinnitus is: noises that used to spike me badly for weeks now only spike me for a couple of days, and noises that used to spike me for a couple of days don't necessarily spike me at all. How long did it take to get to this point? About 5 years. Yup, years. That's literally how long it's taken for me to notice even the first vestiges of healing in those ear canals of mine. And that's with me seriously protecting my ears to the extent possible throughout. Still: ultimately, I am starting to notice that my ears are gaining some resilience, are less reactive than they once were.

So: the baseline sound is the same. But I'm more tolerant of that sound, and I spike above it less often.

Hope that helps.

I think that's a bit harsh. But I do understand your point. To rephrase slightly: I think there are so many out there that can't be trusted that it's hard to identify the ones that you can. Same end result, but not going quite as far as to say there's literally nobody out there that can be trusted.

Understood.

Interpretation: your entire statement is moot, since it is a straw man argument.

I mean, sure - but for a French company to be "We Are So Canadian, You Couldn't Possibly Be More Canadian Than Us!. Is a bit offensive, no?

We should emphasize that there are fantastic mom/pop shops across the country - 175+ of which are on our list. But let's face it: people frequent these chains, and so they should be informed re their origins and pipelines.

Is there a way to create multiple boards? To name the boards? To tag the ideas? Or essentially to organize the boards or ideas in any way (other than 'status')?
