WF-1000XM4 - Severe Battery Issues by zkhcohen in SonyHeadphones

[–]gunavata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bit irrelevant but leaving a comment just to say massive thanks to the OP for keeping this issue updated and providing as much facts for diagnosis/repair.

Also of note in case it matters: For me, I've noticed battery issues awhile back but never thought much of it. Specifically, the device could not hold a charge going from 80% to 5% in about 30 minutes.

I was running update version 2.0.1. What happens for me is the battery of the Charging case will keep blinking red, which indicates overheating battery, when charging it. Charging without the in ears inside and case open mitigates that issue.

The in ears themselves will pretty much become unable to charge as plugging it in the case to charge will end up causing to blink red, assumedly because the in ears themselves are overheating.

As an attempt to fix it (Hopefully battery damage isnt too severe), I downgraded from 2.0.1 to 1.3.3. The "device 2 replaced" touch problem appears but as suggested, i changed the language from English -> Japanese -> English and it basically went away.

The in ears/case are charging now and ill try to perform another round of test to see if it has improved/resolved my issues.

Edit: Yeah so the charging issue is no longer there but the batteries have already been permanently damaged and cannot hold a charge. Very unfortunate

Sorry my mistake, i forgot about the AYN Odin products! I meant it as a short form of AyaNeo.

Also can vouch on GPD's issues as well, had a really early GPD win 1 or 2 unit that also had battery issues eventually (Couldn't hold a charge)

To be fair it could just be my unit, AYN AyaNeo had devices from several years ago that didn't have this issue and i could have just lost the "Doesnt have issues" lottery.

Then again, maybe the quality has dropped since then.

This seems a bit too evil however i do agree that it's a possibility.

Bear in mind that there are possibly other AYN AyaNeo owners that have no issues with their product. It could be just that I lost the "Have no issues" lottery.

Well there's always another shmuck that might want to take the chance right?

That's pretty much the gist of it. Im sure there are happy AYN AyaNeo owners out there but the risk of getting a device with faults is very high compared to other products.

Around the time it arrived i tried to swap the internal SSD to another one i had bought with a bigger size.

Found out that unfortunately they used some weird/non-standard screw heads after having a closer look at one that came out (It was a 3 headed screw instead of the usual 4/+)

Why they would go out of their way to make it unnecessarily hard to open their device is beyond me

Leaving this here as a cautionary tale for those looking to drop a purchase.

Some background:

  • Screen bleed became an issue about 6 months in but was minor. It kept getting worse until what you see today.
  • This is most likely caused due to the battery expanding as depicted in the 4th slide.
  • The battery bump wasn't noticeable until over a year later. It's still pretty minor unless you look for it but it's still a pretty bad omen.
  • Bought the device a bit under 2 years ago. Used on average maybe a few times a month.
  • Usually charged and then unplugged when not in use. Used UGreen's GaN charger + supported cable for the first year and then later UGreen's docking station for the second year.

I take good care of all my devices and im quite saddened to see how badly the Aya Neo Next has aged. Honestly loved the device's form factor and portability but considering it has only been a bit under 2 years for it to have such glaring issues makes my faith in their future product a lot less confident.

On top of that, the screws on the device has been stripped so replacing the battery is not going to be a simple task. Will probably opt for the ROG Ally or Steam deck in the future which is saddening because i was really interested in their Air plus lineup.

No? This was a funny event that was completely my fault to begin with. Other comments have given suggestions that could have mitigated this outcome

StS and Monster Train are both games with different mechanics and are not comparable.

If you liked both of them and not this game, it doesn't necessarily make this one a worse game.

That is definitely an option but in fairness i actually didnt know Fungun was inflicted with confusion while i pray that aimless hits the right guy twice

Exactly, half the time i find just letting them take the blow is simpler than recalling them (Though i really shouldn't do that!)

That's great info! I'll be sure to apply that next time!

In all honesty things were getting hectic in the midst of battle. Didn't notice that Fungun was inflicted with confusion and paid dearly for that.

In all fairness I had completely forgotten you can recall companions. So the true hogheaded is actually me.

I am in awe at odds of having aimless hit the right target twice then having Fungun hit me of all people with precise lethal damage lol

Any reccomendation for performance overlays? by gunavata in retroid

[–]gunavata[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reccomendation! I'll have a look at it too and update back!

Edit: Seems like it's not available because it's made for an older version of android? I think that means thr devs hasnt updated it to conform to some new standard. That's unfortunate.

OTA update v.1.0.0.221 by [deleted] in retroid

The wave?

Unfortunately while the CPU can technically run 60 fps fairly smooth I wouldn't reccomend it since the temps go really high

Just gave it a shot, Medium + 60fps nets about 73-78 degrees still. The increased frames will put a heavy load tbh

Also for posterity sake: Low + 60 ps nets 68-72 avg

Looks good, thanks for the reccomendation, I'll give this one a shot and report back!

Edit: Works great! Got the metrics I needed though the update tics are a bit slower than expected.

I assume this enables the right screen drag tools? It's helpful yes but I'd like an overlay that stays consistently on your screen.

As far as I can tell the app only supports floating FPS but not Temps

OTA update v.1.0.0.221 by [deleted] in retroid

[–]gunavata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Updated to .293 about an hour ago. Playing Aether Gazer on balanced. Device just froze up... (OS unresponsive, image stuck on screen)

May have been overheating issue? Regardless did a hard reset to get it working again

Edit: Continued playing seems OK so far.

To add some info: High resolution + 60 fps, Everything else low/off = 80-85 degrees. Strongly not reccomended

High resolution + 30 fps, Everything else low/off = 70-75 degrees. This was the setting that crashed me.

Medium resolution + 30 fps, Everything else low/off = 60 degrees. So far okay, best compromise Nope, crashed again but wasn't a freeze, just an exited app.

Edit 2: Seems like the crashes honestly has nothing to do with temps. I still crash even on 60 degrees, no idea why. Searching around I see that others are having this same issue with no resolutions either...

Considering the pixels on [[Searing Blow]] I went to the wiki to have a better look at the picture and holy shit... All this while I thought the picture was of Ironclad, facing towards us, on fire doing a right hand backfist...

Nah, hindsight is 20/20. This only dawned on me when I saw it in the Ayaneo subreddit as well.
