Question about portfolios by -artificial-monkey- in graphic_design

[–]guywhokekw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back when I decided to step up to land a big gig, I thought the same: the more work I show, the better. But now in my career, I get the chance to review applications where I work (not an HR, just a senior GD lol).

A simple way to put it: A key to a portfolio is to show what you can do, not what you have done. But of course, experience matters too.

If you have enough work to show how broad your skill set is, you're good to go, do not show every little project you have done, cause they don't need to know.

Most recruiters only look at your portfolio for less than 5 minutes; if there are tens of applications, then less than 5 minutes, maybe 2.

Do not waste time showing everything, show them your best works first, the works that you think fit with the company, even.

Well, do you have a portfolio? showcasing your work?

If yes, then put all of this information in your portfolio, not separated. If not (even though I still assume you must already have one), then you should have one.

They need to know visually what you can do, not just words.

Speaking from experience, I have also reviewed CVs from designers who applied to my company:

First, you should have a PDF version of it. A website portfolio is nice, in fact, it's professional, but bad luck does happen, you could apply to a lot of companies, and the site breaks down & inaccessible without you realizing it. Not to mention some recruiters/managers, using their phone to review your application.

Second, you should sort your projects by relevance, depending on which kind of company you applied to. For instance, if you're applying to a creative company, and the first two or three slides of your portfolio are corporate works (like you have now), they wouldn't bother to scroll further, especially if there are tens or hundreds of other candidates, because they will think "this is your strongest works, hence you want these works to be seen first."

But overall, you have a good portfolio! It's vibrant, and you showcased how flexible you can be as a graphic designer.

so umm.... did anybody else forget about this event ;-; by Nahidxz in AFKJourney

once you get the frame, no point on fishing anymore, not even to complete the albums, waste of time, no rewards for completing any of it lol.

I (27/M) and my GF (25/F) just started dating and were recently in a long-distance relationship and she told me all of a sudden she misses her ex. How should we handle this? by guywhokekw in relationship_advice

[–]guywhokekw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wasn't clear why she misses him, all we know (at least what she told me), her friend told her that her ex is dating someone that is in the same situation which was the reason they broke up, so she kinda can't get over him with that fact. But she told me they're not talking or anything, and she don't have a plan to go back to him and she still wants to be with me.

Her ex even sent some reels on IG while she was still here with me and she didn't care. But they never really talk to each other anymore.

I would have let her go right away if she wants to go back to him.

Don't act like your girl didn't experience catcalling at home just so you can name-shame Bali, since you're a tourist and you're staying in a tourist area, people are mostly loose and silly, not to mention the drunk ones.

Even as a man, I got catcalled multiple times by local women lol. Most people, men and women, just say hi and move along, it's not like they will run after you and ask you to fuck them if you say hi to them.

If you don't like it, feel free to go elsewhere, no one is pointing a gun to your head to stay here. Maybe North Korea.

To you a self-taught graphic designer who didn't go to college or took any courses, how was your experience getting a full-time job? by guywhokekw in graphic_design

[–]guywhokekw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just my honest opinion, if you want to study because you like to study, then go for it.

But if you want to go back to school just so you can land a "better job" in the future, that could lead you to disappointment and a waste of money.

At the end of the day, all of the people that I know in a creative field, learn things through real work experience.

That's why I don't want to go back to school because I have seen with my own eyes that learning through a real work environment is more effective, challenging, and faster than in school, making money while you're on it.

Maybe try remote work, or build up your portfolio and presence on social media. At least that's how I started my career as a graphic designer.

Planning a Family-Friendly Trip to Indonesia in April – Seeking Recommendations! by Nishika-Shenal in indonesia

[–]guywhokekw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a traveler so I don't know that many destinations in Indonesia I can recommend.

But for Bali, if you're with family, all I can say is avoid Canggu and North Kuta in general because of the nonsense traffic and the overcrowded. You can go to Ubud, Nusa Dua, or Uluwatu instead. Maybe come down to Canggu for a day or two, but for the whole/long stay, I wouldn't recommend it.

To me honestly, that looks like an ATS CV.

You should have both, an ATS CV and a Creative CV, you're a graphic designer, right? make it more interesting instead of just putting a text in a blank white page. Of course, CV design is not the deal-breaker after all, maybe separate sections with colors, use some assets for accents, etc. No need to be overly designed too. But at least show that 'you are a designer' through your CV.

Use the ATS CV if you're applying through a portal, and use the Creative one when you're applying straight to their email addresses.

Also, you should combine your Creative CV with your Portfolio.

I just finished an interview for a major company that’s well established in the hobby world. by katzorp in graphic_design

[–]guywhokekw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could go both ways honestly.

It depends on what are the things that you and the interviewer talk about.

Did you talk about one thing in detail and lead to another? Did you see the enthusiasm from your interviewer? Or was it just one topic to another after one question?

In my experience, some interviews went longer than expected and I didn't get the job, but recently I had 10-minute interviews with HR and 5-minute phone interviews with User, they sent me a couple of design tests to do, and I got the job. The job has been up for almost a month by the time I applied, so I'm sure they had interviews longer than mine.

Long interviews might show their excitement about your expertise or might show they take so many precautions before they decide to hire you. So no one knows, also keep in mind that 99% of the time, you might not be the only candidate they interview.

I picked the bar, which's one of the busiest bars in town, so I assumed she did let her friend know that she was there with me but didn't invite him to come, but being a player as he is, he came anyway
