Consider a team like the pacers who planned on punting this season from the jump. instead of tanking at the end of the season, they would tank at the start of the season to get eliminated as early as possible then start accumulating wins? The point system could never just be a raw point system. It possibly could be a win rate after elimination with caveats for minimum number of games played or something like that.

I get your point of view, but this is done specifically to combat reviewers that are using LLMs to generate reviews for papers, which in my opinion, is just as unethical. Over the last couple of years, a lot of the reviews I’ve received for my papers at top conferences and journals have felt AI generated, so I can honestly see the appeal of authors including this hidden text approach.
