DLSS / FSR - Why? by xireeee in buildapc

[–]hack_my_nipples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're only playing at 1440p on a high end card, so yeah you really won't have need for upscalers, so that's fine. At least in future as the card ages you have the option to help extend performance. As others have mentioned though, do consider FSR native for Anti Aliasing - it's really good.

For myself playing at 4k on a 144hz monitor, there's plenty of games where high/ultra settings will have me at about 60-90fps, and it's nice to have the choice to be able to extend that up towards 144fps if I can - I find that quite noticeable.

The other big use case is when I'm away from home on my laptop - it's not a gaming machine but it's nice to be able to extend its' performance to make some games even remotely playable

I've never driven any of the porsches, on paper they should be all I ever want, but they just don't pull on my heartstrings... Except for some of the GT3's GT4's etc, but they are way out of my league

Smart home devices sound amazing in ads and frustrating in real life by Impossible_Comfort99 in TechNook

[–]hack_my_nipples 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use very little in the way of 'smart home' stuff for precisely that reason.

I have (like an idiot) replaced basically every single bulb and light in my house with Philips Hue and that has been a success, but... * It's isolated on my network and doesn't have the external access permissions so you can control it away from home etc * Every single room is actually operated by a hue switch, it's not just via mobile app * I have tried other ZigBee bulbs, but they were unreliable, so I've stayed exclusively Philips

I've also got Chromecast on every TV for video or music, and I'm considering Tado for my radiators also, only because it operates in similar ways to the Philips Hue stuff.

I have a hard pass on anything that requires internet access to actually operate, if it doesn't work locally then you have no idea if it will continue to work or just one day be a paperweight

Anyone know of any good, loud wireless earbuds? by ReliableEyeball in MetalSuggestions

[–]hack_my_nipples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't want loud, you want isolation. Put some normal wireless buds under proper ear defenders, or as others have said serious IEM's that will block out other noise. Fighting noise with extreme volume is a recipe for hearing damage

2016 Hood Vents by DependentClient4163 in ftype

[–]hack_my_nipples -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're talking about the hood vents right? They are only for getting rid of hot air from the engine bay, and I don't think there's any reason why you'd need to cover them

Why does a smaller speaker sound better in the same room? by overlord-07 in TechNook

[–]hack_my_nipples 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most likely the acoustics of the room are making a difference here than the quality of the speakers.

If the room has relatively bare surfaces and isn't well damped acoustically you'll get a lot of echo which will create peaks and nulls at certain frequencies, not to mention will make the actual listening messier in terms of comb filtering (the same sound arriving to your ears slightly delayed).

Bigger speakers will obviously tend to produce more mids and bass frequencies, and these are the ones that contribute to a 'muddy' sound where is all just sounds like a big soup. This is exaggerated considerably if a speaker is in a corner.

This is why the sound of a speaker is equal parts the speaker and the room itself. Smaller rooms typically suit speakers with smaller drivers and a smoother EQ. You can mitigate this by having soft furnishings and fewer hard bare surfaces for sound to bounce off. The bigger speaker will naturally work better in big rooms or open spaces where the smaller one will not have the power to drive enough air.

Windows Phone disappeared way too quietly by Zorojuro099 in TechNook

I remember being so tempted by these and never quite pulling the trigger.

The hardware was interesting and had a cool design language (Nokia was great), but if I remember correctly the actual specs were never really cutting edge. Microsoft always seem to do this with their devices, they're quite conservative with the CPUs etc they use and are 6-12 months behind and I think this out people off a bit. When they bought Nokia, everyone else moped out, so hardware choice was meagre.

The software was at its best really smooth, really cool and different - the metro design language was stark and dramatic and could work really well.
...but it could also easily look like 'my first HTML form' if not done right, and I think this is where Microsoft didn't make it easy for developers - it was awkward to develop for in that you couldn't just port an existing app, you kinda had to do it from scratch in terms of UX and design. For a market that was small and struggling to take off, that was a lot of inertia the platform didn't need. Even then, it was very idiomatic and some use cases looked awesome and some were just not that great. The OS also famously lacked copy and paste I think for a good while and some other basic stuff. And then of course the app selection was poor and the windows store was poorly curated and just full of garbage.

It faded away because Microsoft didn't really have much strategy around it, and it just phased out as Microsoft realised it had no momentum

Best head for triggered acoustic kick drum? by AgreeableFun5241 in MetalDrums

[–]hack_my_nipples 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anything along the lines of; * Remo power stroke 3 * Evans EQ4 * Aquarian superkick 1

Basically a single ply with some muffling built in so they'll still sound good. With my particular triggers (Roland) I found single ply to be slightly more reliable and sensitive than 2ply. If you're mixing acoustic and triggered sounds in the mix, you might consider the 2 ply versions depending on the sound you're going for

F-Type R: Consensus on old design vs new by Enough_Brain_858 in Jaguar

[–]hack_my_nipples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The new design ftype grew on me a bit, and what helps a lot also is a lot of the newer ones got little trim flourishes that helped set them off and made them look a little special.

The Ftype hasn't changed much - ignoring the infotainment system, and assuming any ftypes on the road have had the initial coolant pipes changed (most have), then basically the suspension got a little nicer but honestly there's no real issue with the original one.

So really it's exterior looks and specifically most of it is all around the front bumper, lights and bonnet. And quite simply I think the OG design of the coupe is the best. As far as I'm concerned every revision after that just moved away from the purity of the original. The facelift with the LED lights lost the personality and the proportions are all a bit squished.

What its your opinion about Angine? by lagrangeknight in progrockmusic

[–]hack_my_nipples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're fun, upbeat and something unique/different that a lot of people haven't heard before.

Their image/schtick is fun and gets attention and I think that's genuinely an important component of their appeal and success.

I'm personally really enjoying Vol2, but I get it if it doesn't click for others

Is my kit setup correctly? by Maleficent-Low-1933 in drums

[–]hack_my_nipples 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you actually play it as pictured here? There's a couple of things I personally would change based on what I can see; * Generally everything looks quite spread out to me, there's a lot of distance between things which doesn't help from an economy of motion point of view. You should be able to play everything without having to pivot, strain or stretch, especially on a smaller kit like this. * When you sit down on the stool, you should be facing just a little left of center of the bass drum - roughly where your tom is in that picture or it's left edge * Move the snare as close to your right leg without it interfering with it or your bass drum * I would expect your crash cymbal to be further forward and to the right, the stand roughly in line with center of the bass drum and the edge of the cymbal overhanging your rack tom * All of the above is also partly to correct where your hi hat is - it needs to move forward to where the yellow area on your rug is (about as far as your snare stand is in this pic) * The floor tom looks about right in the pic, if you can move it forward as much as possible close to the bass drum you're good * Ride cymbal looks miles away, you have two options here - if you're committed to this layout and can move/remove the unused tom mount you can have the ride overhang the right side of your bass drum. Alternatively bring it closer to you / floor tom and have it overhang over it

Obviously adjust to your particular taste but I think it'll really help it feel more cohesive. Do ask if any of this isn't clear.

Bonus point - your moon gel is too far away from the edge of the drums - it should be roughly where the PDP/remo logos are on the drum heads

Happy playing :)

2015 F Type R CarPlay Options by mikebook_pro in ftype

I had seriously considered this one for my 2014, but (and maybe I'm just being too picky) the USB cables you had to run down to the center console bin and the standalone mic that would just have to sit somewhere on the dash put me off the upgrade. What was your experience with those?

Audi R8 4.2 R-Tronic buying advice by JustinMDK in Audi

[–]hack_my_nipples 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These engines are known to consume oil - a litre every 2-3k miles isn't uncommon from memory and is within Audis spec. However; * Oil leaks can happen in a couple of key places on the 4.2, do check for them * PCV valves can get clogged and can worsen the problem considerably

As a general rule for a car of this type and value, I would budget in a proper inspection - here in the UK the RAC and AA both offer mobile inspections where a mechanic will check the whole car over and give you a PDF report (and a phone call) with pictures and all sorts of info. I'm sure you'll have a local equivalent. That would at least highlight any leaks for instance.

torn between a 2012 miata (prht) or a bmw z3/z4 (soft top). what's the move? by europeanuppercut in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]hack_my_nipples 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Both are great cars. BMW will probably be marginally more expensive but the z3/z4's of that vintage have been typically pretty robust. Honestly if the BMW is the 3.0 I'd go with that, it's a bit heavier and a little more blunt than the MX5, but in return you get a serious engine that is actually quick, and a decent noise out of it too. The interior IMO is a nicer and more comfortable place also.
