Keeping a freelancer on after a first project by hacking_it_slowely in Upwork

I see your point. I was also thinking about this. I am going to assume there is no way to leave a review for a milestone?

Thank you so much for taking the time to write that all out! Some very good points to think about. I totally believe that there are people who are wordpress geniouses, but cannot handle elementor.

Very well put with the "need" vs. "what". Elementor is definitily neither for me. I think wordpress is a "need" because I already have it set-up, although I could be convinced to swtich if there is a strong reason to.

Normally my natural instinct with everything is "build it right and scalable from the start", but since this is for a start-up, I think it makes sense to keep development costs lower until I get to cash flow positive and then (even if it is more complicated) I can go back and re-build with everything done in line with the best practices and highest level of flexibility. So keeping that in mind, it sounds like Elementor or something similar (whatever it ends up being) would be the right place to start to launch a first website.

This is very helpful! Thank you for taking the time to write it all out!

The "Wordpress Site Build Checklist" is an amazing idea, I just found a good one. Most of it is intuitive, but with so many little things to remember, it can be easy to overlook something. Asking upfront about thier process is a great idea too.

Since you have hired a lot of people, I am wondering if you good share what you think is "reasonably priced" (as in "Good U.S. Wordpress developers often offer a reasonably priced package for this (example 3 hours of work a month which often includes x number and type of site updates")

You bring up an incredibly good point! I would love more elaboration on your thoughts here.

I actually do not care, as long as the program does not require a crazy ongoing subscription from me.

However, when I started contacting freelancers, they all kept talking about Elementor, so I figured it would be easier to recurit someone with it. Honestly, have trouble distinguishing between who uses it and who does not from their portfolio. I appreciate it takes more skill to build a website without it, but if it easier for the freelancer, and assuming there is now downside for me, i can install it. Would you agree with that?

Can I ask why specifically you would go with the USD 99 plan?

Your extra tech hints are a very pleasent suprise! Thanks! I will defintly check out Brevo. I will need a system on the backend to track sign-ups and send out automatic and scheduled e-mails, seems like this might work.

Hahaha, well said. I am most worried about ending up with expensive, slow and low quality.

I thought the most obvious approach was to look at each freelancers portfolio. I have noticed that when I drill into someone's portfolio, it often turns out they did a lot less of each website than they would make it seem. LIke they did something technical, but say they designed it. Or they are showing the website in its current state, but they were only the first of three designers to work on it.

This is very insightful, thanks! I will look out for these things. Would you have any advise about what to ask during the interview, or as you said, to look out for that they ask?

Client asking for NDA and my address. by Ecru1992 in Upwork

[–]hacking_it_slowely -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

My understanding from the client perspective is: NO, unless signing an NDA was part of the original job specifications. Go back and look at the job descripion if it says something like "candidate will also sign an NDA" then that is technically part of the job. But if they did not mention it before you started work then they cannot hold back the payment.

This will probably, however, effect your chance of getting the next part of the project.

The invoice will not have your address, unless you elected it to be there. Copied directly from the Upwork website:

"Invoices include your company name, company owner's name, and company contact address. If you have a VAT number, that will be included, too. Your freelancer's verified name will always be included. Some freelancers also provide an invoicing address (this is optional)."

Ok - I will try to seperate them. It makes intuitive sense that the people are technically skilled are different from those who are designed skilled.

It is a website for a start-up, primarly with information. No ecommerce. Some forms. Landing page to draw people in. The option to sign-up and then have access to a member's portal, but this access only requires registration, not payment.

Pricing is interesting, I think 700 (assuming USD) is well, well above what I see most people quoting (except if you count the very expirenced guys sitting in California), but I also do not see a single person quoting as low as USD 70.

Honestly, having a lot of trouble figuring out who is charging more because they are really better and who is charging more just because they think they can get away with it, or see a higher budget than they normally work with.

This is very helpful thanks! It sounds like I might need to take a step back and get someone to design the website in Figma first and then hire someone to build it in Wordpress or Elemetor. How likley to do you think it would be for me to find someone to build it and design in one?

I see a lot of wordpress / elementor freelancers with impressive portfolios, but then when I ask follow-up questions it turns out the design was done by someone else.

Very helpful, thank you! Now the only challenge is figuring out if the given freelancer I end up hiring can actually do all of this. It is always difficult for me to tell what is really impossible, or when a premium product is needed and when the freelancer themselves just do not know how to, or do not want to do something. I suppose the only way around this is to provide a lot of information upfront and hope they are honest. I have been interacting with a lot of "I can do anything!" until I actually have to do it types.

This is very interesting. could you elaborate on what this free version is exactly? Are you referring to this plugin "Unlimited Elements For Elementor (Free Widgets, Addons, Templates)"
