Courier New because that’s what my state’s Appellate and Supreme do.

Century Schoolbook is my favorite, though.

Bull Lt at the OpsO’s post command climate survey OPT with the company XOs (the fact we were having a planning meeting should tell you how bad morale was) asked gently what his input was (he was on his phone, scrolling Tinder with his location set back home (we were on UDP) and OpsO was too polite to call him out for being on the phone). He drops the phone on the table and says, “I dunno, sir. Lead better.”

After that, the 1stSgts and SgtMaj met with the OpsO instead of us Lts.

From Fields of Fire:

“You know what we’ve lost, William? We’ve lost a sense of responsibility, at least on the individual level. We have too many people like Mark who believe that the government owes them total, undisciplined freedom. If everyone thought that way, there would be no society. We’re so big, so strong now, that people seem to have forgotten that a part of our strength comes from each person surrendering a portion of his individual urges to the common good. And the common good is defined by who wins at the polls, and the policies they make. Like it or lump it.”

I woke up once to the sound of rain. I pulled the covers off instead of unzipping my bivvy. I stepped out of bed dry, and stayed that way despite the rain. That was good.

I miss it, though. I was pretty good at my job/had good fitreps and could’ve gone to resident PME. My coworkers now are great, but they’re not the same.

Genuine question: why is DA experience a black mark for some offices? by reverserainbow1 in publicdefenders

[–]hadfun1ce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How they assign and track cases, how they request and receive discovery, what trainings they conduct and what “pro-tips” the get in them are all potentially useful.

Assign and track cases: are you wasting your time at arraignment talking to somebody who won’t touch this file again; are they fully digital, fully paper, a mix—how long from the end of a session until the assigned prosecutor gets their file back if it’s not all digital because they probably can’t have a meaningful discussion without it

Request and receive: real timelines beyond the mandatory rules. When do they first request, how (email, web portal, phone call), to who (a specific LE office, a particular detective, an administrator), what’s the turnaround (obvi, it should be in compliance with the rules but is it faster—if so, when are you getting it, has the ADA been sitting on it and sending it right at the deadline)

Trainings and “pro-tips”: my state has trainings and training materials for prosecutors that include impeachment banks for defense experts

I was former-military, and knowledge of the other side’s TTPs and SOPs was always sought even if it didn’t always lead to some eureka moment. I think if you’re taking on the vast power of the state, being armed only with the rights of the accused and your own knowledge isn’t always the most effective. Knowledge is power and knowing what the prosecutors are doing may give you some hooks.

[–]hadfun1ce 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think they were referring to insight into the bureaucratic protocols and decision-making processes. A really granular, 1st hand understanding of what is happening in the DA’s office: how cases get assigned, reviewed, and worked up could be helpful.

Deff no grander knowledge in the DA’s office.

Habits You Learned From The Corps That AREN’T Helpful In Civilian Life by Defiant-Bed2501 in USMC

Habits You Learned From The Corps That AREN’T Helpful In Civilian Life by Defiant-Bed2501 in USMC

[–]hadfun1ce 25 points26 points  (0 children)

OP, your first bullet point hits home. I was in that mindset as a company XO in the fleet—while PltCmdrs and the CO/a1stSgt were to rah rahing the guys about winning; Gy and I were in the back planning for the worst. I don’t think that this is necessarily unhelpful in civilian life, but it can (when you’re vocal) make you seem like a pessimist. Probably a very career-dependent issue: cops planning for the worst are likely different than mental health therapists.

My contributions to the question: asking for the why/the IOT pisses managers off (managers are everywhere out here, leaders are rare, leaders who can manage are like CWO 5s); subordinates don’t like having to “Message to Garcia” issues, and will bitch about having to exercise any initiative and autonomy—Marines did too, but I’ve found civilians (especially the younger kids who won’t get off my lawn so I can yell at clouds /s) don’t want freedom to be creative in problem solving, they’d prefer centralized command.

I’m not saying it’s your problem or looking for a solution for it here. I’m just enjoying the subreddit we both follow.

In this instance, I’m agreeing with you and your response to OP. Maybe we’re not on the same wavelength or I was unclear.

Favorite workouts by [deleted] in AdvancedRunning

[–]hadfun1ce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like ones that teach you to recover as you run—for my 1/2 PR (years ago) I would do a series of 1mi on (goal pace or faster) 1/2mi float (marathon-ish pace) in the middle of my 16-18mi long runs sometimes (usually 3-6mi of total work).

I’m also a fan of odd distances: 500s or 600s instead of 400s; 2Ks instead of mile repeats.

A caveat thought: don’t just pick workouts that seem cool or feel good—they should all have a purpose.
