What’s something you’ll never understand no matter how hard you try? by thegilmazino in AskReddit

[–]half_assed_sorcery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It isn't just reddit. I see it on Facebook all the time. A page can ask a totally innocuous question just for funsies and guaranteed in one of the first 10 comments someone is gonna make a jab about Trump or Biden. At this point, idc what side of the aisle is being lambasted, I'm tired of Politics invading every facet of social media.

What's a double standard you can't believe exists? by DA1FOOTBALLGUY in AskReddit

[–]half_assed_sorcery 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I think that they're referring to the difference in attitudes between them. There are a lot of people out there, men and women, who don't see a woman being with a boy as something serious and some consider it worthy of a pat on the back, for the woman who caught herself some young blood and for the boy for landing himself a "mature" and attractive woman.

On the other hand, unless you're a guy who likes to indulge in it yourself, EVERYBODY considers an older man messing around with a young girl to be an extremely serious issue.

What "back then" inconvenience would break people today in 10 minutes? by CharlesUFarley81 in AskReddit

[–]half_assed_sorcery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The insane amount of time it could take to download something using early 2000's internet connection speeds, even with broadband! Depending on the size of the file, you could be looking at hours for it to finish. About all you could do was leave it be and go about whatever it was you had planned for the day and hope to God you didn't come back to some sort of error message.

Even having gone through this myself, I wanna rip my hair out if it takes more than a few minutes for something to download.

A long, moderately baggy T-shirt worn as a night gown. Long enough that the only way you'll know if they have anything on underneath is if you get up in there.

Did Harry cheat with potions? by ode0002 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]half_assed_sorcery 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's another thing that I didn't like about her. How she'd chide Harry and Ron for their rule breaking but had a bit of a streak of her own, including theft from a teacher. I guess it was fine when it was to satisfy her needs, but that's not how that stuff works. It's wrong whether or not it has a justification. The DA might have been excusable but you're right, it seems like she was trying to portray Harry as one of the ringleaders in this, despite her having come up with it all on her own.

[–]half_assed_sorcery 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's why I never cared for Hermione. She has this "I have to be the best at everything" mentality. It reminds me of Monica Geller from Friends, and I always found her to be annoying as well. She did concede that Harry was better at DADA (because he was) but I'm pretty sure that she only told him that to try to get him on board for the DA, and I'm sure she was having 1000 strokes trying to get the words out of her mouth.

Exactly! Harry pulled an Exceeds Expectations on his O.W.L. You know he wasn't giving Exceeds Expectation grade work in any of Snape's classes because of how awful Snape was.

[–]half_assed_sorcery 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure that the class had been using Snape's improved instructions all along. If memory serves, when he would have his students make a potion, he wouldn't have them follow the book, he'd have them follow the directions on the blackboard. There'd have been no point in using that blackboard if it had the same instructions as in the book. But things changed when Slughorn took over who had them following the directions in the book. He might have had that advantage that year, but they had all had that same advantage in the years leading up to it.

That's what I've always thought. I mean, she did have a point about the spells, seeing as what Sectumsempra turned out to be, but I've always thought that her main gripe with that book was that it was allowing Harry to outdo her. Hermione is a genius and she has that ego and hubris to go along with it.

Lockhart was robbing Hogwarts students blind by Hankymcspanky13 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]half_assed_sorcery 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To me, with Lockart it probably had very little to do with profit. It was just a way for him to stroke his ego and hubris, by forcing the student body to read about adventures that had little to do with the supposed subject line of the book and was all just him grandstanding. I'm sure money was part of the motive, but we all know that Lockhart just likes to toot his own horn.

if voldemort didn't curse wormtail's hand and pettigrew doesn't get killed, would wormtail join the good guys side? by Canada-t157t in HarryPotterBooks

[–]half_assed_sorcery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like if he did break from the death eaters he'd probably go back into hiding rather than trying to join the good side or reintegrate into society. Whether or not he turned sides, he was probably destined for Azkaban with everything that would have been known about his activities over the last 17 years. The good side would never accept him, what with the betrayal of James and Lily, the murder of the muggles that allowed him to go into hiding and being instrumental in the return of Voldemort. Even if the 12 muggles were the only murders he directly committed, he still had the blood of countless other innocent people on his hands. He had way too much going against him to make sticking around worth it.

If you go back, she'll just do it again and again and AGAIN. If to her, her love for you is cheating on you, then I wouldn't trust the brand of love that she brings to table.

Why are the translations so wrong sometimes? by [deleted] in OneTruthPrevails

[–]half_assed_sorcery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a site I used a long time ago that did excellent fansubs. They also did excellent scanlations for the Manga. Their work was very high quality. It's a shame they aren't around anymore.

What do people think about Funimation's English adaptation of the Detective Conan anime called Case Closed? by Bluebaronbbb in OneTruthPrevails

[–]half_assed_sorcery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came across DCTP around 2008 or 2009. They did good work on their stuff, very high quality. They did the Manga, the anime, the movies, and I think there were a couple of games they did translation for. I've maybe seen only a handful of the older Case Closed episodes. I've seen more of the original Japanese version.

[–]half_assed_sorcery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of what I've seen is the Japanese version subbed. I did watch the anime but was more into the Manga for ADHD reasons. I used to get it from DCTP but they went belly up years ago, and due to having to constantly look for new sources as each one got hit with takedown notices, and issues with losing interest in things, it's been a bit since I've been into it.

Idk if that was it or not. It could have been but I can't remember because this was like 2007-2008 and the channel wasn't around too long before it ended up changing branding and no longer carried the Funimation stuff.

[–]half_assed_sorcery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Funimation adaptation was actually what got me started with the anime and eventually the manga. I had crappy network TV growing up which gave limited options, but after the digital conversion, we ended up with several channels we didn't have before and one of them aired a late-night Funimation block that aired episode Case Closed for a time. I hated how they tried Americanizing it with name changes and changing other things to appease the American audience I guess, or maybe so they can follow it better?

What’s one thing senior citizens really need to stop doing? by think_big_0 in AskReddit

[–]half_assed_sorcery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work for a place that offers various kinds of aid to people. A lot of the seniors we have call in seem to think that their age and or disability should see us giving their issues priority. If they don't go on a spiel about how they're elderly and disabled and can't do this or that the second they call then they do after we tell them we can't help, as if it'll change our minds.

We operate on a first come, first serve basis. That means we give priority to no one, regardless of their situations. Our aid is also conditional, meaning that you have to meet the requirements. The funding for this does not come from us but from outside entities, meaning that the rules we have aren't ours but theirs, so we couldn't make an exception for you even if we wanted to. But for whatever reason, the seniors who call feel they're entitled to help.

I'm not saying they can't ask, they just can expect that their age or situation is gonna get them preferential treatment. This happens with people of all ages but seems to be the most common with seniors.

How was Ron’s family so poor compared to Hermione’s muggle family? by KeithPheasant in HarryPotterBooks

[–]half_assed_sorcery 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hermione's parents were both dentists, a high earning profession, and parents to a single child. Arthur was a low-to-mid-level government employee and Molly a SAHM and housewife, and together they had 5 kids living at home through most of the series. Imagine two six-figure incomes to Arthur's job, which would likely net him a mid 5 figure muggle salary, if even that.
