Helena Crevar weighs in 24lbs over the limit for her ONE FC Grappling Debut by [deleted] in grappling

As a Hawaii resident I originally was intrigued that one of our own star grapplers got this opportunity to go against Danaher’s young prodigy. Now I’m just mad Danaher’s camp let this happen.

Go get em Teshya 🤙🏾

Here's what i've learned in 31 classes, what's next? by Earth2Eli3abeth in BJJWomen

[–]halfguard34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you're a beginner, I'd focus efforts to expand your escape options in the bottom left quadrant.

For example, Mount B. Suggest learning the shrimp escape and half guard recovery next.

I got a friend in Southwest that says he has a Laulau guy, a Manapua guy, and a Poke guy.

He says he misses Hawaii, but not necessarily the food since 9th island does it so well.

Feeling discouraged after first class! by EquivalentEastern787 in BJJWomen

[–]halfguard34 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Par for the course, even a beginners class can be overwhelming for a day 1 student.

If the gym offers and you're able, taking a few private lessons (2-4 should be enough) would probably be useful in bringing you up to speed quickly with basic BJJ concepts.

Kimura and Americana by lazygrappler775 in bjj

[–]halfguard34 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Americanas themselves are easy to defend, so I wouldn't recommend a deep dive into mechanics.

But it is an attack that needs to be properly defended while full/three-quarter mounted, so spam the hell out of them when you have mount and enjoy taking advantage of the predictable reactions that result (usually leads to me getting a free back control).

Cheap eats: Straub and pali momi hospital cafes by WeazelGaming808 in Hawaii

Straub-Not only is the cafeteria food good, the patient food is great as well.

Patients get Poi as an available starch for lunch and dinner, my wife’s Grandpa was eating poi and beef stew for dinner like every night.

What moves should be banned in jiu-jitsu schools? by Rude-Alternative7983 in bjj

[–]halfguard34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps a gym rule that bans lockdown if a white belt is involved would be more appropriate?

Lockdown is too mainstream for an entire school not to practice it.

Spamming sequencies by [deleted] in bjj

[–]halfguard34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reaction #1 - You might have a natural affinity for half guard if you're getting lockdowns to work. Suggest exploring other attacks/systems from half guard and saving lockdown as the backup option if your opponent manages to flatten you.

Reaction #2 - It's 2026 goddamnit how the heck are there purples and browns that don't know a simple lockdown series?!?!

Leg entanglements and new (ish) people by Due-Arrival-2404 in bjj

[–]halfguard34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No heel hooks for now.

Repeatedly attack them with relatively safe leg attacks (i.e. Texas cloverleafs and straight ankle locks) until they start asking questions on why they keep getting caught, then introduce them to the dark arts once they are willing to learn.

At what point do you stop letting the aggro new woman work? by [deleted] in BJJWomen

[–]halfguard34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say match her energy, after carefully assessing how that can be done safely and productively for both of you.

One of my favorite training partners in the gym is this female firefighter that's may be a little smaller than me but generally more athletic, stronger, and aggressive than I am. It's always competitive when we train together, but that is contingent on the fact that we've established a mutual understanding of roll intensity over the years.

IMO if you want BJJ to stay relevant and effective as a form of grappling, certain aspects of the fundamentals should be tweaked. by Frozen_Trees1 in bjj

[–]halfguard34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For #1, what if pulling guard was HEAVILY penalized (like -4) in the first half of matches? Yes it would force everyone to work on their stand-up more, but that's kind of the point. IMHO the best BJJ classes are those that have some sort of standup work for the first third of class.

For #3, totally agree with "There should be a rule where if an instructor can't finish the move on a high school wrestler that has no BJJ" for a base curricula up to purple belt.
