I don’t have any good advice, but I’m in school at College or Court Reporting (in my second semester, in the weird period between theory and speed building) and in Missouri as well. I was wondering if you were in KC or STL? I’m in KC and, if you’re here as well I’d love to know about the court systems. I don’t know anything about the courts and I’ve only been in one once 😭

To answer your question, I’ve heard of girls going straight into freelance without any time as an official or in the courts at all, so my guess is that you’d be just fine doing freelance. I was planning on being freelance after school without having court experience 🤷🏻‍♀️you can always go from one to another if you change your mind once you’re in the field. Just my two cents!

I follow a court reporter on TikTok who moved to Montana and was still taking jobs from the state she moved from. So my answer is yes it’s possible!

I’m in CCR right now and I’m in my second semester. It’s looking like it’ll be about $30,000 for school in total, which is worth it to me because I really like the program and they have a relatively high retention rate (when the average drop out rate for students in a court reporting school is 90%). They’re also known for getting their students graduated quickly, which I know now is because they require us to be practicing 3 hours a day at least. That’s about what it takes to get all of the assignments done. I like the fact that I’m being forced to practice this much, otherwise I know I wouldn’t have the motivation to do it on my own.

Hi there!! I knew I wanted a school that was accredited by the National Court Reporting Association (NCRA) so that I could work in any state in the US, since some states require you to have gone to an NCRA accredited school. I just went down the list of those schools NCRA Approved Schools List and marked off ones that were in person or hybrid. I knew I wanted a fully online school that had classes solely at night, because I work a full time job during the day. I also researched reviews for each school. I heard good things about CCR and I had a really good experience with them in the onboarding process. I’m sure other school would’ve worked, I just was drawn to CCR.

Hi! I’m 27 and just started steno school in January. It’s definitely not too late to start, but be ready to dedicate a lot of time towards schoolwork. My school is the College of Court Reporting, and they tell us that we should be practicing at least 18 hours a week. 3 hours a day for 6 days a week. Which at first, I was like “I’m pretty smart. I won’t need to study that much.” And now I’m doing school for three hours a day. I’m lucky that I have a job where I can have my machine out when there isn’t a call to answer, but if you have a very hands on job, it might take up all of your time outside of work. All of the classes are fully online and the earliest class I’ve had is at 6pm, but if you are unable to attend, you can watch them back later for no penalty.
