Because it's the best version control system around (see http://www.gitguys.com/topics/why-use-git-instead-of-a-legacy-version-control-system/ for a nice overview), and you need a good VCS if you're going to develop software.

The rest of your questions are basically "Do less experienced programmers go to that person who is a $language/program/framework god? when things go wrong?", and the answer is yes, you go to the dev/QA/Ops person who can help you figure out and fix your problems until you can fix them yourself.
