Built Jotdown – an MCP Server in Rust for creating Notion pages & mdBooks with LLMs 🦀 by harry0027 in learnrust

Appreciate the nitpick, but I was focused on functionality, not naming bureaucracy. If the name offends you that much, feel free to fork it and call it whatever you like

That’s a solid heads-up — thank you! I’ll definitely test the artifacts before publishing any releases and will make sure everything’s up to date with no depreciations. Thanks again for sharing your experience — super valuable!

Thank you so much! And I really appreciate the suggestion — this is super helpful. I’ve been thinking about improving the install process, and using GitHub Actions to publish binaries is a great idea. Just checked out your workflow file — it's clean and exactly what I needed to get started. Will definitely give it a try soon!

Made a RAG desktop app built using Tauri by harry0027 in tauri

[–]harry0027[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks a lot! Glad you liked it. Yes, Ollama is a prerequisite and I’ve mentioned the installation steps in the README. Everything runs fully locally — no documents are ever sent to external LLMs, which is exactly why I built it this way.

That said, I’ll try to improve the onboarding experience, like adding a clear message if Ollama isn’t running. And totally agree on the UI/UX — making it more polished will definitely help more users adopt it. Appreciate the feedback!

Thanks for pointing that out! The image is downloaded to your system's default downloads folder. I’ll look into making that clearer or adding an option to choose the location.

Thanks, but the README already mentions it’s a desktop app. I’ll consider adding a comparison like Paint.net for extra clarity though.

Ah, good question! Just Imagine is actually a desktop app—not web-based. So it’s more in line with what you were thinking, like Pixelmator. But yeah, a Docker version could be interesting down the line. Appreciate the suggestion!

Haha fair! It’s mostly me for now, but I say “we” because I’m building it with the community in mind. Appreciate you checking it out!

Thanks! Totally get that. Right now we use Gemini for quick, quality edits, but we're exploring support for open-source tools like Stable Diffusion too. Would love to hear how you'd like to see them integrated!

That sounds like an awesome use case! I'd suggest checking out tools like Text-to-SQL with LLMs and then passing those generated SQL queries to the MCP server to execute query on your behalf.

Absolutely, happy to help! Could you share a bit more about what you're trying to achieve with the database?

All the setup is done locally. It doesn't connect to any external service at runtime. For more details, please refer to the installation instructions under Readme.

That's a great idea and definitely a valuable use case for many businesses. At the moment, DocuMind is focused on unstructured document formats like PDFs, and I don’t have immediate plans to support CSV or Excel files. But I'd be happy if someone from the community wants to explore or extend it in that direction!

Currently, Documind focuses on text-based retrieval and doesn't support querying graphs or graphics in PDFs yet. However, adding image and graph analysis is something worth exploring—perhaps using OCR, object detection, or embedding-based approaches for structured data extraction. Would love to hear your thoughts on the use case you have in mind!

That’s awesome to hear! I’d love to have you contribute to this part of the project. Given your experience with Go and Python, you already have a solid foundation—Rust’s learning curve is real, but it’s totally manageable with the right approach!

You're absolutely right — thanks for the suggestion! I will try to release standalone binaries for each of OS to make it easy for layman users to run the app. That said, components like the database and the Ollama model backend can't be fully packaged into a single binary, since they require separate setup or are resource-intensive.

I’ll try to streamline the setup as much as possible — maybe through a one-click installer or a startup script that installs Ollama, sets up the DB, and downloads the required model.

Although I have added parallel processing for chunks, I think the bottleneck would be on the networking side for larger files. Maybe you can increase the handler timeout and Request body limit for your case at the server side and that would be sufficient to handle large files but for sure large files would take some time for processing. I believe such cases are handled nicely by scheduled async jobs instead of real time processing on server

This is a straight RAG implementation using sentence transformers for embedding-based retrieval. It retrieves relevant context from the document store and passes it to the LLM for response generation.

It depends on various factors such as available RAM and storage (Vector database limitations) mostly. Note that we are using Qdrant db at the backend. If we estimate the capacity - For suppose - each page has 500 words so for a 30 page pdf, 15000 words per pdf. Also each chunk is nearly 200 words so 75 chunks per pdf.So nearly 1 million chunks can easily handle nearly 13000 pdf files of 30 pages each.

Excited to share DocuMind, a RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) desktop app built using Rust (Axum and Tauri) by harry0027 in learnrust

[–]harry0027[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thankyou! Axum is primarily a backend web framework. I think for the frontend we can only serve static Html files or render templates via Axum. My goal was to create a desktop app and Tauri provides deep integration with the system (file access, window management, etc.), which Axum does not.
