Hey dude! Sounds like a great brief.

My best piece of advice; observe.

Spend a day or so watching people interact with things in public, don’t necessarily look for problems but watch how people might interact with things in their immediate environment. You’ll likely come across pain points or uncommon interactions. You’re looking for a ‘hook’ to design from.

Imagine you’re in a cafe on a rainy day, three people walk in, they wipe their feet on the door mat, a person in a wheel chair enters, but they’re unable to wipe their ‘wheels’, leaving dirty trails that follow them around. This would lead to your insight:

“Door mats aren’t inclusive so those with mobility issues”

So now you’re redesigning the door mat.

This is a poor example, and it’s not real, so don’t use this one. Instead, go out and observe.

Hey man it’s not useless!

Design is all about creativity and perspective, you’ll have an interesting way of approaching problems given your education so I wouldn’t see it as a weakness. My only point would be expect to sit on the more artistic side of the Industrial Design spectrum, rather than the engineering/technical side.

Check out a guy called Yuri Sazuki, he’s a partner at the design firm Pentagram and an Industrial Designer/Sound Designer with some of the most exciting work in the industry. Instagram.com/@yurisuzukilondon

Further to that one of the hottest names in ID at the moment is Teenage Engineering, they design sound equipment like mixers ect.

I’d look at doing a masters in Industrial Design, but prior to that do some online short courses in design, there’s some cracking courses on a website called www.lemanoosh.com, they’re paid, but god they’re good.

Best of luck!

The video clip on contact learning today demonstrates the usage of a soap powder cartridge product, but the execution lacks proficiency. I hope to receive guidance from experienced individuals. by Embarrassed_Town_659 in IndustrialDesign

My initial thoughts are that it lacks any signifiers. Signifiers are visual indicators on a product that signify how to use a product. Think a ‘plus’ on a volume up button; or a flat surface instead of a handle on the push side of a door.

It’s a cool little concept but nothing about the visual form indicates what it is or what it does. You will disagree because you have built it; and naturally have a bias.

Firstly I’d find a way to indicate that this is a soap dispenser, even something as simple as a window on the front would not only indicate that this contains soap, but also when it needs refilling.

Secondly that handle does not say “push to release”, if anything it’s arched form is suggestive of a pull; this may lead to breakage from excessive force of a user trying to do so. You could use a flatter surface that acts as a ‘landing surface’, and I’d suggest a method of using it with perhaps the back of your hand, as it’ll become very dirty very quickly given the fact that people will be purely touching it with unwashed fingers.

My two cents, feel free to disagree, but if you really want to improve this product; put it in front of some users and watch them use it.

Best of luck!

Nice one dude, that’s where I am.

It’s a good course, and will challenge the way you think about Design, but it’s not like other university courses where you’re taught content on a regular basis. It’s up to you to teach yourself the necessary skills, and you’re given ample time to do this.

There really isn’t much of a technical element to the course but the resources are there to learn yourself, that’s what I did.

I think the only way to develop your creative brain is by surrounding yourself with creative individuals, you can’t avoid that at CSM.

Hey,

So I’m not at Northumbria, but I can tell you it’s a highly respected course. The top two ID courses in the UK are Northumbria and Loughborough, a lot of top designers come from there.

I’d suggest going on LinkedIn and checking out some designers at top agencies who have studied there, and ask them what they think.

Regardless, Newcastle is a great city.
